Daniel Penny had just been released from jail for helping restrain a man who died on the subway last year. He was innocent but spent months in jail. Anyone who wanted to help may have been afraid to because Penny had just been headline news.
What Penny did (and justifiably did, of course) has absolutely NOTHING in common with commuters and two police officers doing absolutely nothing to put out the flames on that poor woman. The two incidents have nothing in common.

People are loving the Daniel Penny excuse but that excuse is completely irrational. Trying to put out the flames on a burning woman has nothing in common with trying to restrain a dangerous perpetrator.
This comment section was full of people that don’t live in the United States and don’t understand bystanders are at risk of imprisonment for helping others in violent situations. What happened is messed up, but I’m not going to prison or getting charged with a hate crime or having my life ruined for someone else. It's also full of people who don't live in cities like NYC and risk prosecution, death threats, and losing their jobs. Just because your state/city are sane does not mean the same rules apply everywhere in the USA.
Very true, if New York, at the very least, thanked people who risked their safety to help strangers on a subway; instead of charging them with hate crimes, then the city would be a safer place to live.
