    This episode covers the infamous Wars of the Roses (yes plural) which engulfed England after its failure during the Hundred Years' War. This conflict saw the House of Lancaster and the House of York fight it out for the throne. Some of England's most famous kings, Henry VI, Edward IV, the short-lived Edward V and most famously, Richard III are all covered in this episode which ends with the establishment of the Tudor Dynasty.
    Recommended Books:
    Alison Weir - Lancaster and York: The Wars of the Roses - Probably the best overview of the Wars given their complexity. Like most overviews it really glosses over the later parts but barring that it's excellent.
    Michael Hicks - The Wars of the Roses - Another very good overview but a bit more detailed (this one also has a timeline in it). Slightly harder to get into than Weir's book, though.
    Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

    The next episode won't be English and British history just so everyone knows, it'll be 'The Fall of the Ottomans and the Birth of Turkey' (1804-1930). Just so the people who aren't interested in English history can get some content they like too.

    One thing you missed which I think is very important is the fact that the Tudor line is directly descended from the Beaufort line (Duke of Somerset) and that line was declared illegitimate by their own admission and renounced their claim to the throne. This made Henry Tudor's rise to power all that more prolific and problematic and even Henry VIII had to deal with that. Good video overall though

    As someone who has watched a little a bit of Game of Thrones but loves history including this much more messier and complex event than the entire GOT plot(just like many other real events worldwide) I have to say:
    All Hail His Grace Henry of the House of Tudor,First of His Name,King of the English,Welsh and Eastern Irish,Ruler of the British Isles and Protector of the Kingdom.

    Everybody moan about the war being "complicated", but if this was a court lady drama series you would see a very different reaction.
    Incidentally the name of the war became popular through a novel which coined the name base on Shakespeare's dramatisation of the event. There's a scene in the play in which characters declare their allegiance by donning the rose of the faction they supported. It was merely called "the civil wars" back in his day. Shakespeare, of course, was patronised by the famed queen Elizabeth I, who was the grandchild of the ultimate winner of the war mentioned at the end, Henry Tudor. Her father, of course, was the infamous Henry VIII who ditched Catholicism to divorce his wife, only to kill his new wife and Elizabeth I's mother, Anne Boleyn.
    As mentioned, there's so much drama it's unfathomable. A weak king supplanted by his determined wife. Richard was killed in combat, but instead of the Yorkist crumbling, his son Edward IV rallied and win the throne with the help of Duke of Warwick. However, their alliance was broken because Edward ignored Warwick arrangement for marriage and marry for love. Warwick ended up betraying Yorkist cause and attempted to restore the old king Henry VI with the help of the queen, only to be defeated and killed. Unfortunately, Edward soon died, leaving his son as king. Instead of serving as Regent, his younger brother, Richard III, seized the throne instead. Richard ended up being the last English king to be killed in battle against Henry Tudor.
    Why do we need GoT when history itself is more than epic and dramatic enough?

    The brave Yorkists ran away,
    (No!)
    bravely ran away, away.
    (They didn't!)
    When danger reared it's ugly head,
    they bravely turned their tails and fled.
    (They never!)
    Yes, the brave Yorkists turned about,
    and gallantly they chickened out.
    (You're lying!)
    Swiftly taking to their feet,
    they beat a very brave retreat.
    Bravest of the brave, the Yorkists!

    • @MNKY80808
      @MNKY80808 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you want to be pernickety about it, there was no 'England' in the time of Boudicia, so Watling Street doesn't qualify.

    • @levinb1
      @levinb1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True, but the slide and image said "English Soil." I interpreted English soil as the land of England as we know it as place and region today, regardless of time. So, I guess my argumentative hat was on, and I decided to be pernickety. But, you're right that in most people's eyes, when in conversation about "England," it's primarily in reference to the post-Roman, I think, and the beginning of the Anglo-Saxon times onward.
      The Battle of Watling street would not qualify.
