Phyllis, I stand here a young man merely 27 years of age, but your music has touched me throughout my entire life. I can truly say that as an artist I love you and I can honestly relate to you. So I hope you can hear my words in heaven because it's been many a day you have pulled me through a situation I couldn't have done on my own. Just the fact your presence is no longer here with us brings tears to my eyes at this moment, but I will wipe them away and hold my head up high for you!
The documentary on her really touched me! I had read up on her prior to "Unsung" and realized she was astronomically talented! The rich lows, highs, and even being able to whistle a line makes you wanna Slap her! Just by looking at the clips of interviews and behind the stage, she seemed like a joy to be around. I wish to God I could have met her!! It's talent like hers that goes unappreciated today and it's a shame! Rest in peace Phyllis and may God have mercy on your weary soul!
I love Phyllis Hyman's voice and also that she was one of my Diva's Favorite singers the forever Nancy Wilson. I hear Nancy's influence on this track. Love you Ladies.
I would never have imagined this song at this tempo. And it works! I didn't listen to Phyllis for a few years after her death. It was too painful. I celebrate her legacy now and the joy of having experienced her gift. I realize love can seem so elusive: more to some than others. Thank you for posting this.
July 6th: Happy birthday Singer-Actress Phyllis Hyman (1949-1995) Tony Award nominee: Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady". Thank you and God bless. RIP. Thanks for the upload, Tjmama5. Blesings
Phyllis Hyman. Vocalist. 'Nuff said....beautiful song written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Heart...1937...covered by a lot of artists....but, with respect....this is Phyllis Hyman. Thanks for the upload, Tjmama5. RIP Singer. Blessings
Ella and sassy are the true masters all the rest will tell u if they could they aspire to their heights but for my generation Chaka Anita Phyllis were masters of the era
What an incredible VOICE with so so much PASSION..no one can ever fill your shoes my DARLING..u r still the BEST.U still amaze me each day after allll these years. They dont and will never make music like yours ever again in this lifetime.
This only shows how timeless her music was, she was able to switch from classic to day flawlessly. They could never pigeon hole because the diva could do what others could not do. She probably could have broken into country music and still rocked it with that Phyllis flare.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS. I used to have a copy of her singing this at The Blue Note in New York. It's one of the few arrangements of this overdone song that I can stand to hear.
That she was. I'm hoping that after the special "Unsung" runs next month that we will see more forgotten uploads from others. That would really be great.
She's one of the all-time greats 4real. I love Chaka's version, then Phylis's, then mine on my channel. I channeled Chaka's version real well. You'll agree once you see it. It's my highest/ most watched video on youtube.
chaka is still a top for me with this song. I love this version too. but it seems to me they're the only ones who make this sound upbeat and loving. the others seem to make it seem like something you'd hear at a funeral or something. smh. It's not supposed to be a sad song. Or at least in my mind it wasn't to be one.
Phyllis was BI-POLAR... love alone wasn't enough to keep her alive unfortunately. Her issues were not a lack of love it was a chemical imbalance. That was a nice thought though WMSPREZ. I wish it were that simple but it's really not.

That keyboard playing, bass playing, and Phyllis's voice of gold is pure perfection.

tHX for sharing , you just made my 2009 Valentine's day...amazing.
Meisha Moore
Excellent upload!
I, like Philly, turned this jazz melody into a slight disco banga..her vocals are truly versatile.
her rendition is really hot. Very different from some of the other versions I have heard, not boring at all.
Bass player is getting some for real.
Wish we knew who is was
thanks so much for posting!
Timeless voice....
WOW!!..NICE!!

SHE DOES IT AGAIN...REPLAY!!!
Like this
I like the arrangement. This one got by me. She left us way too soon.
She's one of the all-time greats 4real. I love Chaka's version, then Phylis's, then mine on my channel. I channeled Chaka's version real well. You'll agree once you see it. It's my highest/ most watched video on youtube.
This sounds like it could be on a Ridge Racer or Tekken game soundtrack... R.I.P Phyllis Hyman
I just posted the live video of her singing this song at the Blue Note, no doubt you will enjoy seeing her perorm this live.
🔥🔥🔥
Yes..
My father grew up with her.
anyone know where to get the whole blue note performace in mp3? :)
chaka is still a top for me with this song. Isn't this the sample for Regulators?

If she was still here, in 2 years I will ask for her hands in marriage. So she can sing to everyday
@wmsprez09 Don't we all. I sing where u at? lol
I love Phyllis' voice, but I don't like this version of the song. The tempo is way too fast.
I love Phyliss but not this version. Anita Baker's version is the best.
Well, this is different, Anita's is really cool, but Chaka Khan's is the best to me.
I love her singing this song, she's GREAT! However, I hate that disco influenced arrangement. She's so good and it's so bad.
