As a fellow vfr owner so pleased to see a pair saved, I see so many parted out and run down at the moment.. they are a fantastic machine and much better made than many modern bikes today, love your work!

I always get a major attack of nostalgia when I see a VFR - and two being restored is a major jolt to the senses. I owned a 1998 model from 2002 through to a couple of years ago. Admittedly, it was parked up for a few of those years while I used other bikes.
My bike was used for touring Europe, commuting, track days and various other bike related events. Not sure the joints would cope with the riding position any more but I’d still buy one, funds permitting.

I have a 2000 FiY in the USA. I agree...I haven't been able to ride it much as I have a dodgy left hip from a crash 33 years ago. It's still a great bike, but as its potential rider I'm just not up to scratch. Time for a Harley with running boards and a more relaxed riding position.

2 key mods for this generation of VFR...a high mount exhaust (shows off that single sided swingarm and uncorks that glorious exhaust note), and an aftermarket seat. Don't bother recovering the original, the ergos are terrible. In my humble opinion, the Corbin offers the best compromise between ergos and too much foam (Sargent). The Corbin Smuggler is a nice item, sometimes available with a seat heater. Very worthwhile extras are a high quality rear shock, properly set up for the rider, and bar risers. Advanced/hard to find mods include an RC51 front end (triple adjustable and the the wheel matches the stock VFR rear), Corbin Beetlebags, and the tinted windscreen. Supposedly the tinted windscreen was not a USA item and is very rare stateside. Don't be tempted by bigger cams, big bore kits, or Power Commanders...wasted time and money. It's difficult to improve on Honda's basic engineering with the engine.

I had an 'R' reg VFR 800FiW back in the early 2000's, what a machine! The induction howl from under the tank on full acceleration was like a Nascar, what a great bike, you have to love Honda, they really are the masters.

Good luck with adjusting the valves on the Vtek. Way more difficult then non Ttec. if you do not do it yourself it is very pricey to have a mechanic do it and way to often they will just leave them close to or out of specs. Way to time consuming to remove cams several times. Need proper tool etc. Of course ignoring valve gaps is what often happens to avoid the cost and or hassle eventually causing early engine ware. the Radiators on the sides of the bike do not get proper windage that is the reason for overheating issues. This is why i purchased a 4th gen VFR with full 2bros complete exhaust. used various methods sure up plastics which are a problem to replace.

You did a fantastic job restoring these two bikes. On the electrical side I use a power probe 3 and it tells you right away if you have voltage (how much) and ground and if you have a good one. Not always really so easy to tell. There is a cheap book by if I remember correctly Tracy? Martin How to diagnose and repair automobile electrical systems. Worth it's weight in gold. Keep doing what you are doing!

My restoration, These pair of Interceptor's turned out magnificent! Very good work. I have a '98 VFR...781....and I love it. The only reason I would consider selling the VFR is my age and back. I also love my '07 ST 1300 (non-ABS), what you Brits call a Pan European. if my ST could sound like my VFR, that would be sweet. I am going to change out my LED Headlight bulbs back to halogen on my VFR. The LED's are not working as well as I was expecting. I added a Givi rack for the E-21 panniers and a Givi D200S Touring screen.

I got one 98 in exchange for a Vstrom with the intention of selling it fast. Was so happy with it that I kept it one year. But I'm more into dual purpose bikes. Amazing machine. The first day I drove it under a heavy storm on the highway way faster than I should, I didn't get a drop of rain on me, except the top of the helmet. The way you could control the slides on the curves with this engine were out of this world. The only problem with this bike was you usually were going a lot faster than you thought, it was so easy and comfortable.

Great content! Can you believe I'm performing maintence/restoration and a build of two '99 Fix models, my fix. Additionally, I've a sweet 2008 with only 5000 miles in Sword silver; got her at 488 miles! Also, the daily driver, 2004, is being put back together with upgrades. As far as the build, I'd love to have a naked similar to Dan Yoder's.
    Questions:
    1) Member of VFRWord or VFRDiscussion forums?
    2) As I'm in the US with the only colorways being Italian Red and for 2000, yellow, what color were they originally?
    3) Did you use the original formulated two stage paint? Do you have the mix for the Italian Red two-stage paint?
    4) Any suggestions for rim restoration? The '99's wheels are black. I'd like a polished, satin, or similar to the 2004 US or finish. Any suggestions or the formulation of your paint for those?
    5) Where did you find the decals?!
    6) You are quite busy, but I'd love to set up a discourse and exchange (or receipt mostly) of information.
Again, thanks for the content, as you provide additional motivation!

To be clear, these 2 VFRs were not nuts and bolts restored like the others. Simply because the value doesn’t justify the work do I made choices and cut corners but the result was relatively good for the effort.
      1. I used the forum to help with writing issues. It was useful to an extent. 2. No idea what the Honda red is called but I did not like it. I’m glad I changed it even now.
      3. Yrs it is a 2 pack automotive paint. The colour was hand mixed so no I don’t have the specs sorry. 4 hard to say without seeing the rims but if you have access to a media blaster then get the old off and start again. Mine were ok to key down and finish spray. 5. All masked and sprayed on. No decals. 6. Unfortunately this is the case it is a hobby between my work but you will find your way as I did.
      Good luck with the projects!

Great to see the restoration of the mighty Viffer! I bought one of these new the first week they went on sale. Such a fantastic machine, it did everything really well. After 7 years I did the unthinkable and Pex'd it for a new Triumph 1050 Sprint. After a few months and one winter I knew I had made a big mistake, the Triumph's fixings began to rust and the general fit and finish were poor compared to the VFR. The Triumph was sold and I bought a low miles VFR FiX in 2017 and still have it. It did suffer a reg/rec faiure and although I bought a new one the real issue with these bikes is the wiring loom being so thin, the wires corrode internally taking the reg/rec with it due to overcharging. Replacing the reg/rec with a new item is not solving the problem. I got Ferret of Ferret Electricals to go through the whole loom and the bike is now perfect (apart from the just announced ULEZ in outer London meaning I need to get a cat fitted).

    • @graememorrison333

Unfortunately no. The VFR800FiX is not on the official TfL list of ULEZ compliant motorcycles despite being fuel injected! My knackered old CB500 sailed through with 0.10g/km and is now on the TfL database as ULEZ exempt.

The track bike nearly burnt down at the end of a session, the road one left me on the highway stranded, with the rectifier. Granted they both had over 130K kms on the clocks..
Iconic engines but for me I rather sit on my newer bikes.

All bikes of that era had crap regulator/rectifiers. Just upgrade it to a Shindenegen FH020AA or FH027. Hard wire it in getting rid of the awful connector blocks that melt and can catch fire.

I wish I had the money to bring you a crusty late-1990s/early-2000s bike so you would bring it up to spec.
    Lovely work, keep it going!

Fantastic bike, I owned one from 2003 to 2007 and the only issue I had with it was the rectifier which is a common issue with many Honda's of this era. Also they used mild steel for the down pipes which are a bugger to replace, an issue which is only going to get worse as these bikes get older.

And...its an engine out job to replace the down pipes.😫

No I renewed my 800 fi downpipes after a snetterton trackday which ended with cracked through rusted pipes, fitted a stainless steel set without removing the engine no problem 👍

Well, that was bloody satisfying! Seeing these old beauties come back to life was awesome. I went on a trip to Spain around 10 years ago and one of the guts was riding this exact bike. I always loved the look of the single-sidded swingarm 👌🏼 What is your plan for them now they are complete? One would look good in my possession 😂
