in new zealand we can buy oatmeal in prison, but they took away standard milk and we only get trim milk now. but you can buy milk powder so i started making oatmeal with extra milk powder mixed in and made a slurry of milk powder and water to almost acheive cream. one thing that can get you a charge in prison is making caramel, but if the screws like you enough they will let you make caramel in the microwave from a cardboard milk carton. i would make a lovely caramel syrup that i put on my oatmeal to resemble golden syrup. it also went well on top of jail cake and banana slice and when i would get really fancy i would make caramelised banana or apple or pear or the hot grill in the yard and finish it off with caramel syrup. being a chef on the outside i gained a lot of respect from lifers who had been making jail recipes for 25+ years and i would trade them my chefs school cooking lessons for their chess lessons. you dont have to be a kingpin or shotcaller to gain respect in prison. just having certain skills you could teach was good enough. i definately am not a legal expert but i would get paid food and snacks and smokes to right well worded and articulate letters for those less literate than me. aint no cheeks gettin busted or wigs split if you are a straight up guy.
