@@johntupper1369 the choice of lenses is a very personal one. For me, I'd go for something closer to 35 equivalent, but if you're shooting portraits, the 90 is great.

Hi Gordon. That was a pleasant surprise and a great review. 😎 Already owning XCD glass I must admit I was very tempted when the camera was announced but came to the same conclusion that I reached earlier with the X2D that I didn't need the extra 40% of linear resolution. So my only reasons for buying the 907X plus CFV 100C would be to make me and those watching me feel that I'm a better photographer than I actually am. 😂 OK, that was slightly tongue in cheek but I am delighted that Hasselblad has moved both its X-system cameras on beyond the life expectancy of the old 50 megapixel sensor which, as I understand it, is no longer being made with consequent implications for future servicing. If my X1D II ever packs up or worse my lenses can still find a home so Hasselblad has protected my investment. Bravo to them and bravo to you for the review. 👏👏👏

One of the best, if not the best, reviews of this camera. This is definitely the camera I would buy if a distant and hitherto unknown relative remembered me in their will. As a stills-only photographer it is my dream camera but sadly beyond my ability to own (right now but never say never!).

I am shooting the X2D 100C with the XCD 2,5/55V and XCD 2,5/90V lenses and currently shooting mainly portrait and fashion.
Having shot on my 500 CM from the early 1980's, I was very intrigued by the 907X and CFV 50C but opted for the X2D for the 100 MP.
I am very tempted to explore the 907X & CFV 100C since I can use it on my 500CM. I don't think I would really have any use for the 907X part of the system and really wish Hasselblad would just offer the 100C back on it's own.
I did purchase the V-system lens adapter and the X2D works perfectly with all my old V lenses which give me a very nice "analogue" feel to the images. I have also, so far, not experienced any "rolling shutter" artifacts even when photographing flowing water.
Just another note, I shot both sports and wildlife with my 500CM back in the film days and have had no problems shooting sport and wildlife with the X2D - it all comes down to being able to anticipate what your subject is going to do.

I love this camera. If I ever give up wildlife photography I'll sell my RF600 F4 and R3 and pick this up and a couple lenses.
It'd be a very different experience, but a lot more portable!
You get what you pay for. This is definitely one of those situations. I'll never own one. But I'm glad it exists and that others will.

This camera, and the four lenses that I'd want (one zoom, three primes), would cost more than $20k. But I get it... very cool. Needs ibis, for sure.

@@cameralabs No. I have modern Sony system for anything I'd ever want to shoot. The X2D just is a different take on that... chasing the ideal photo. The point of the Hassy is to be something beautiful and different. As the old man I'll be in a few years, that might work perfectly. Waiting for the IBIS. Thanks for a lovely review!

@@cameralabs that camera needs continuous auto focus and eye af. this should be a basic. Look out for Sony 102 medium format.
Love the clean and simple design (not to mention the elegant style and aesthetics).... Here's a thought 🤔, as mentioned it has no IBIS but would it work on a gimbal (to get stabilisation without the need of carrying an awkward tripod).... Maybe??? 🙂🙏
Gimbals are great, but you can't touch the camera, so while they're fine for video, they're not suitable for stills where you touch the camera.
The best review of the camera to date. If this had come out before I bought my X2D, I'd have bought this instead. It's limited but as you point out, Gordon, it's sui generis and not trying to be like every other camera on the market. I doubt that people will but it as their only camera anyway. Despite the lack of IBIS, it is the ultimate travel camera in terms of size, weight and resolution.

Hasselblad & Linhof - two of my favourite brands (that I'll never be able to own). I only had 2 occasions when I had the privilege to use either brands (both were analogue cameras). I'll stick to using my "middle class" Nikon dslr. 😊

Nice to get your take on the 907X, Gordo. I dont feel satisfied with new camera review until I get yours. Hey Gordo, wouldn't be cool to get a FF, cheaper version of the modern Hasselblad? How well do you think a FF Hasselblad would do. Why can't they modernise and make $2500/$4000 full frame cameras!
That could be fun, but I don't see it happening! Their lens system is designed fore bigger sensors.
Great review. I looked at the X2D and didn’t like the overall feel and experience. It feels not Hassy. One of the great joy of my H5D is the shutter sound. How about that for the CFV?
Well on this system it's a leaf shutter in the lens, so pretty quiet. Didn't I show a clip in the video, I meant to!
Excellent review, Gordon. Very interesting camera indeed. A few years ago when they were still cheap, I purchased a 501C/M to play with. That was a nice experience. I ended up selling it and all the collected lenses and accessories, as the prices went up again. I could not resist, as I did not often use it, due to the overall bulkiness of the system. I wish the CFV camera back would have a dark slide, similar to the older 500 series film camera backs, in order to protect the sensor. The large open sensor makes me nervous.
I agree, i think it could do with a dark slide.
I have an X2D but as nice as I think the 907x + back is, I can only see the V-mount support as a gimmick. I don't see it as supporting the older stuff because they don't even sell the older stuff. If it's broken, the party trick is done. I would like it if Hasselblad made a modern wasit-level camera based on their X mount.
The X2D is certainly a strong product.
Totally agree with you I have the X2D and its miles ahead this POS. In bright sunlight can't even see the LCD! It won't even AF with my 45 3.5 !
Gordon, I am seriously considering this system. Direct sunlight in Australia is, at times, severe. How is the screen in very bright light ?
Weeeeeell, in the dimmer UK, it was ok, but where you are it can get pretty bright. I'd see if you can rent or borrow one first to see if it's usable in your conditions.

Do you think the beauty and backwards combability with the 500cm would be worth it over the form factor, viewfinder and sensor stabilization of the X2D. Pretend here you had the cash, and were in the market for one of these two?
It's heart vs head! The most sensible choice and most flexible is of course the X2D, but there's something about the 907X which is very inspirational. Tough choice!

I don’t understand why they don’t have the LCD panel to also tilt upwards in a vertical orientation. This means we can only shoot horizontally.
Very true, I should have talked about that. The body design and concept was originally for square film, so there was no portrait or landscape shooting. But now with a rectangular sensor, it becomes more of a consideration unless you crop.
It's surprising that the review - which is otherwise very comprehensive - did not address or discuss using the 907x in portrait orientation. Waist level orientation is fine for a square image, but the CFV isn't square. Does Hasselblad expect users to crop? How feasible is it to turn the camera to the side for a vertical shot?
You're absolutely right, and I was so engrossed in shooting it horizontal, I didn't even think about portrait until afterwards. My part-excuse is that the original 500 series used square format film, so there was no need for portrait, and the 907X inherits that design BUT as you know the CFV 100C has a rectangular sensor. So there would be nefits to shooting it portrait but the ergonomics and design really discourage that to a point I don't think you'd bother. Luckily there's tons of resolution here though, so taking a portrait crop from the landscape shape isn't the end of the World, but again points to the X2D for greater flexibility.
You can flip it easily for portraits. I’m seriously surprised you didn’t know that!
Great review, and yes, I want one! On the accesory grip- one of the reasons I use a Leica SL2 is because of the 'straight' grip. To me (large hands) it is hands down (no pun) the most comfortable to hold. The classic 'notch' gives me blisters after a short time. I never got why the shortest surface distance is under one's longest finger. My finger tip on those grips (99% of them out there) is always mashed into the body by the lens. For what it's worth...
If I may ask a quick question about the CFV, can it be used with a 3rd party EVF? Thanks in advance

@@OrdLee no, there's no electrical connection for a video feed to an EVF.
@@cameralabs I see, video feed might be the keyword. So even though the hot shoe can trigger the flash, it cannot send the video signal.
Focusing using the screen with glare will be difficult thing to do.

i think hasselblad pure-photo direction is a big mistake. they should at least allow external recording via hdmi. The large sensor would make for an interesting capture.
when you invest in those expensive high quality lenses, you do want to shoot a clip or two from time to time
It won't suit everyone, but if you want video in this format, Fujifilm has you Covered
@labs There's nothing to be suited to, I don't see how that would sacrifice it's current photo capabilities.
If Fuji can do it, so can Hassleblad. It is to my belief they simply did that so that when they release "X3D" or "X2D II" they can have a meaningful "upgrade" by allowing video capabilities once again.
A built digital photo camera is already 95% a video camera. That's why so many digital cameras include video capabilities. It doesn't take much to include the feature, so most decide to do it.
@@lowIQstuff I completely understand, and when you have live view on a screen, you are doing it with video, so it is built into all modern cameras. I guess they just wanted to appeal to purist photographers who get annoyed about video. I'd have preferred it was in there, but I know there's different preferences. Be interesting to see if the line stays pure photo or if they do add it as you suggest.
What a great review; I'm never going to own one but great none the less lol. One interesting idea, which you mentioned but didn't expand on; I realise that, like what you said; it's a camera, not for optically looking through, but, what about those people who want an optical view (this is no reflection on the review, or the video) could they not produce a new mid system, slimmer that the old Hasselblad's of the past, but giving the adaptability of a real optical view, through the lens. maybe a switchable mirror ; which could act as as an electronic display when locked up for shooting or bulb modes, or that when in mirror mode could superimpose electronic info on the backside of the mirror?
In theory they could, but since you'd need a mirror the same size as the sensor, you may as well stick with the mirrored body of an old 500 series I guess?

I would like to try that for a future video. It's cropped compared to film as you know, plus you need to take photos in two stages. Hasselblad has a video showing how on their website.
@@cameralabs I used it on a 1966 SWC (modified at the tripod mount to a swc/m). The results of the lens at f16 are astonishing!
Oh how nice it would be to have a camera made to be just a camera in today's world. Just a tad bit more affordable than this one and leica. The nikon zf at least has the soul.

In theory yes, but gimbals only work when you don't touch the camera - so they're fine for video, bit not really appropriate for photos.
When, ever, would one use a gimbal for still photography 😟

So, are we all just supposed to ignore the fact that this camera only works properly in landscape format? That modular design made sense for a square format film body but seems to be a significant drawback for a camera fitted with a rectangular sensor. It doesn't seem as though Hasselblad made any attempt to address the fact that you have to rotate the body 90 degrees to shoot in portrait orientation. I suppose that would have compromised the vintage aesthetics.
The Form defies the Function IMO.

Just got mine its very very disappointing !!! in sunlight outside can't even see what your shooting. It gets to warm no IBIS and in M mode using the shutter button and the tiny wheel plus keeping your finger on the tiny button for adjustment forget about it. And some older lens can not work!! such as the 45mm 3.5 will not auto focus. By the X2d way better same price .
Sure thing, it's not for everyone or every situation. I found the screen was visible outdoors where I live, especially if I angled it to reduce glare, but if it's brighter where you are, it may not be as suitable. The X2D is certainly a lot more flexible and practical.

Why, why, why they don't propose a full 6X6 (55x55 in fact) square digital back for their V system ??? I don't understand this... I'm not interested in an MF crop sensor... Hasselbald V series camera are square camera, with the ergonomic of the camera made for square shooting (so no vertical position !). And the old lenses cover this sensor/film area. The general rendering of the image (ex : the blur progressivity) will be much better with a full 55x55 square sensor. And I don't care if it have only 12Mpix... I want real MF rendering, not upper 24x36 rendering. (PS : it seems there eyeAF is not very precise for the moment, it appears the eyelash is often more in focus than the eye)
I agree, the holy grail here would be a large square sensor, but the reason they don't is sheer cost. There are some larger sensors available - see Phase One for instance, but they are stratospherically expensive, and their limited demand means they're unlikely to go down anytime soon. This product had to be more commercial, hence the smaller sensor, and was also limited by what sensors were actually available. But yes, a 6x6cm digital back would be amazing!
It would be possible, but how much would you expect to pay for such a camera? The sensor manufacturers don't commonly make this size of sensor, so it would need to be custom made for Hasselblad, and the bigger physical size equals more cost too. Therefore, I guess it is a simple case of economics... it is no doubt possible to have such a camera, but considering how the general opinion is that $8k already makes the 907X 100 MPixel an expensive camera, how many would buy the camera if it was multiple times the price of the 907X???
The lens range would also need to be considered too, as the XCD lenses have an image circle designed for the crop sensor, so to increase the size of the sensor would mean a whole new lens range would need to be developed as well, and the cost of such development would also add to the cost of the camera, etc.
With cameras like the Panasonic Lumix S1R and the Leica SL2, and they’re true, 187 megapixel shift mode. It’s starting to make cameras like this irrelevant.
For super wealthy hipsters, expect to find a lot on the second hand market with a very low shutter count
