  • This specifically focuses on how to determine the framing lengths when constructing a Rough Opening. Additionally your header and rough-sill are always 3 inches longer that the width of the R.O. and the rough sill is the same as the R.O. (when built the same as the drawing)

Very cool video! I have a question, if I may. What about sloping the sill for avoiding water retention on it? Is not done while framing the rough opening? Thank you.

Definitely a good idea. I use insulated concrete forms for my exterior walls so I don’t know know how difficult this would be to implement into wood framing.

    Thanks very much.
You made one small verbal mistake - you said R.O. should be 3/8" larger than window, yet you show correct 3/4" on the whiteboard.

He actually said 3/8 on each side which added together would be 3/8 + 3/8 = 3/4. This is still different than the States where we typically do 1" (1/2" per side) but I suppose it doesn't really matter, so long as there is room for adjustment/shimming.

Just build a story board will all the sizing drawn onto it. Way easier.

I like this idea! We use a storyboard when building ICF homes from bottom to top.

BTW you failed to mention ceiling height ....lots of homes have taller walls than 8' ....I was trying to use your advice and realized why it looked so wrong ....I have 9' ceilings!

Never use just one top plate, even when your studs are stacked. Cap plates not only make walls stranger, but they also tie the walls together at the corners.

      I totally agree.
