My Dissectum Viridis is 107 years old. 12 ' x 20' spread. 28 years of aesthetic pruning. It's an art. Large branches are removed during the dormant period (Jan/Feb) and a lighter summer pruning. It's a methodical process. I am close to the look of a Bonsai tree I seek. Truly spectacular. Green all summer and scarlet red/orange in the fall.
BEST video I have seen to show me exactly what I needed to see and know to properly prune this beautiful, but seriously overgrown, tree!!! Thank you!!!!!
I did not find this video helpful and I’ll continue my research elsewhere, but I totally enjoyed watching the process, admiring this funky little acer. Truly therapeutic
I would like to see same pruning without leaves to understand better the choice between houw branch cut and what no and a little explanation of the chioce. Thanks 😉
When you prune is personal preference. I prefer pruning during summer or early autumn when the leaves are still on the tree. If you want to encourage a lot of new growth, spring is better. If you want to see the branch structure properly whilst pruning, then autumn is best, like Gary suggested.
The pruners you use is totally personal preference. The ones I use are linked in the description box. They are Japanese garden tools, which are more expensive than other garden tools, but of high quality. So, I decided to invest in those tools. I think the most important is that the tool feels right for you, when holding it and when working with it. I do recommend high quality tools that cut well.

Very useful. Thank you.
Thanks for your comment, Margaret. Very much appreciated.
Why wouldn’t you wait until fall to see the branch structure?
That video can’t wait to trim my Japanese maple
Thank you! My tree looks just like that in my new house and I had no idea how to prune but still look natural. One question is when do I do it? Fall?
Fall is the best time , tree is dormant and no leaves so you can see what you are doing

Miss your videos.
What brand pruner should I purchase. MyJM is totally out of hand.
