    I worked 25 years in dealerships and had all my tool organized. I would seat every week and watch the other tech's go out to the tool trucks to buy lost tools they couldn't find. Ever day at 5:00pm I would go through my box and could tell if something is missing , I could also check all day long for missing tools and in a dealership speed is money looking for tool cuts your profit. And it makes working a lot easier. Love your shop, on my wish list before I die.

      Plus, you were able to get *FREE TOOLS* when all the other tech’s were out on the tool trucks. :-)

    Keith, my shop is one of the best organized I have ever seen in person (though I still have a long way to go for my own ideal), but I still learned quite a bit from this. Thank you for doing these videos even when you don't have time for a "proper" project video!

    Organization is tough sometimes and especially when limited on space and budget. I like all those smaller cabinets and drawers because they can fit most anywhere and hold quite a bit of stuff, so I use a lot of them. Those Lista or Equipto type cabinets are the ultimate in storage but usually come with an ultimate price too. Even ones at auction will usually go pretty high but I am always on the lookout. In the end it's what works best for your situation and budget and you can always work towards an upgrade. Great video Keith, as always.

    For those people considering building a shop be it for machining, woodworking, or underwater basket weaving, put in canopy windows high on the wall. Natural light is wonderful, no one likes working in a cave and any light fixtures are just not the same, but when you put in either double hung or casement windows in a shop one of two things always happens. Some machine or tool chest always ends up in front of it, blocking most the window, or blinds or shades are put on it and you are in a cave anyway. Quality windows are expensive. Get some benefit out of them. I put canopy windows in my shop 30+ years ago high on the wall and it is one of the best decisions I have made in this life. Morning and late afternoon sun put a glow in a shop you can only imagine. You will want to be out there all of the time. Nosey people have no idea of what you are doing, and you get the full benefit of the window because it is never covered up.

      My shop has a "back room" with a mixture of well-kept tool and fastener cabinets and a complete clustertruck of castoffs, broken tools, other manual tools, and for some reason completely unorganized reamers. The weird thing is that the reamers are the only ones that aren't well kept & organized.
      But yeah, pretty much the same.

    Keith, I got a bunch of alarm company access boxes, and I plan to make a drawer type setup of these and put plastic dividers in them. I have some polycarbonate drops that I can rip gown and notch to fit in these boxes since some are wider than others, I'll just base it upon the largest ones and make them all fit. I think I'll even make wooden fronts so that they look uniform this way, and use garage door metal handles on them to save money. I can get them from a local supplier, as excess from hardware kits.

    I’m ashamed to admit my hardware organization & storage system consists of a bunch of 2 lb. Maxwell House coffee cans. Some even have the plastic tops!
    Then there’s the “jewel box” can that catches the overflow. In it I can for sure find one of anything I ever had left over from other projects. Finding a second piece - maybe, maybe not. But if you’re ever stuck for a U-clamp for a 1260 u-joint from a 1965 Mustang, I have one! Saw it in the Jewel box last month. Or was that last winter...?

    At 28:00 you should cut out a piece of leather in the shape of your cast iron collet rack, and fasten it in the back and let it hang over an inch or so like an apron to protect your collets from dust and shavings / chips. Then just lift to access.

      Good idea!

    • @intjonmiller
      @intjonmiller 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To add a tiny detail to that great idea, for anyone who hasn't ever heard of our recognized this option, one of the cheapest ways to get leather for shop use is at a second hand store in the form of used purses, jackets, worn out furniture, etc. You can even ask the manager for permission to put up a small sign in the area where they sort donations to ask the workers to contact you when there is such a item that is received which is not in good enough condition for them to sell, so it doesn't get thrown away. Make sure you mention that you are still willing to pay a bit for it to sort their organization. Leather acquired this way is already conditioned and pliable, and you don't have to feel bad about cutting it up as you might about expensive new leather. Save your money for the precision stuff!!

    Great system for organising things. I made a portable rack for all my clamps so I don’t waste time looking around the shop for where I last put down a clamp. Like the 50 taper racks. I’ve struggled with how to make a hole to fit the taper on my NT40 and NT50 taper tooling. Have a plastic thermoformer and made moulds to shape individual holders - on the one day get around to it list. Like the fact that you have left room to move around your shop and keep the floors clean. Did you paint the floor? That makes sweeping up so much easier. Added bonus with a painted floor is any oil spills can be quickly cleaned up with a handful of sawdust. Cheers.

    awesome video contents as for you collet rack I would suggest you to make a french cleat on a rolling cabinet out of wood and make your own too and you can enclose them doors too they would be portable to go around the shop too and if you would they would make that you would make I have been looking into cabinets or rack too storage is a much do not like to stack thing on each other too just thought about that too and you could make it fit your needs I love the Milwaukee hard case boxes to better for storage and I will start there for mine . I like the idea that I could move the cabinets away from the wall if I need the wall space too
    and get all the same hight would be like a wall too would be an idea to put plugs in the cabinet too now give the more usage and help not to cover up the wall outlets too

    I am extremely jealous, my workshop is a combination of garage, barn, potting shed and workshop. To do any thing you first have to make space such as move out the ride on mower and as I store gardening tools, chainsaw, strimmer, hand mower it is very cluttered and unorganised. However I count myself lucky as I do have a workshop.

    Very good.
    I personally would go complete nerd overkill, with a computerized database of all small pieces, linked to a microcontroller that carries standard plastic garage organization boxes with a rail system to a common access point. This would save on space, only needing to have a few inches between boxes, while adding the efficiency of computers.
    Just an idea.

    Thanks for sharing your shop and projects with us. I have been wondering why parts of your shop have the horizontal green metal panel at the bottom of the wall. I am speculating that is either a surface that won't absorb oils from machinery or for access to run piping or wires inside the wall at a future date. I am slowly working on finishing out the inside of my new shop and always looking for ideas!

    • @VintageMachinery
      @VintageMachinery  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's for several reasons. First, because the lower parts of the wall is where most of the bumping, oil, wear, scratches, etc., happen and the metal cover helps protect things. Second, because I like to looks of it. Third, the idea of the metal cover give me some additional protection from sparks, welding sparks, hot metal from the torch, from having any wood to come in direct contact with and hopefully reducing the chances of starting a fire.

    Hi Keith,
    For storage, I found that the Harbor Freight parts boxes are probably more flexible and much cheaper than almost anything you will find (they also come in two depths). Plus the thing that really makes them convenient is that you can pull the individual containers and take them to a task, or you can move them around within the box (or event to another box). It saves a lot of time when you are sorting things. There are also a bunch of plans on TH-cam to make "Sortimo" cabinets for the boxes.
    I took the idea from the one and created slide out dividers so you can mix and match the different boxes within the same Sortimo system. Here is a link to the TH-cam:
    th-cam.com/video/4CPogfOYrDM/w-d-xo.html
    The boxes go for about $8 - $13 (small or large) and work really well and you can build them easly in a few hours.
    If you are interested, I can send you my take on the design. I wanted to be able to mix the size boxes anywhere in the cabinet, so I change the order down the road. Here is a TH-cam of the one I used. If you want, I can send you the Sketchup File that I used.
    Thanks for the videos, I am more of a woodworker, but am dabbling in metal.
    Take care,
    H. Barton

    • @rubarb0406
      @rubarb0406 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I could give credit to the individual who contributed this. The suggestion came from another TH-cam contributor. I live in San Diego and while it is dryer than many locations, I still get rust. Place menthol bearing save/ointment in the bottom of a tool box or drawer unit. The higher the menthol ingredient the more protection one receives.

    • @VintageMachinery
      @VintageMachinery  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, because the shop is insulated (but not climate controlled), the temperature changes inside the shop are slow. This alone is probably the greatest thing that I do to control rust. Quick temp changes will result in condensation which causes rust much faster. Outside fo that, I try to keep a light coat of oil on things.

    the same principle applies to counter top space, anything more than 18" creates a loss of floor space and more clutter...it is a human dynamic.

    Your 5/16 wrench is upside down. Lol I'm so OCD about my tools being organized only I would ever notice that. I have 75 of those Plano 3700 series boxes with everything under the sun in them. I need to build a rack for them .

    Do you have a bin to store a taper shank drill like like Adam Booth's new 3-7/8" MT6?

      I really am not sure what the differences are between those two models - I have not been able to find much historical information on these saws. From the looks of mine, if there are any differences, they are minor.

    1/2" and 1/4" Russian birch make great cabs, and paraffin will lube the ways forever. I saw your Unisaw back there, pining to turn expensive wood into fine sawdust....

    For me, it's a never ending struggle ... I'm beginning to believe that my being organized is an illusion. There's always something misplaced. Right now I can't find my box of hole saws and also my Wen soldering gun. Oh, well.

    That case is for taper length drills, not taper shank. But since the length of the taper shank is close to that of the taper length it seems to work.
    But if you ever get a taper length taper shank drill...

    Hi Keith, If you are ever in St. Paul MN and want a tour of Huot Manufacturing send me a reply. A friend of mine is the grandson of the original owner, I actually talked to him a few months ago about giving you a tour, I just never sent you a message.

      I agree, he seems to have more than he needs. But hey, it's his money. If you want something buy it. I like to buy tools too, sometimes long before I ever use them.

    It's better if they have a clear drawer, so you can see what's in there.
