  • After the death of Ferdinand of Aragon (1452-1516), the Regent of Spain Cardinal Cisneros writes to Ferdinand's eldest grandson, Charles of Habsburg, to come to Spain and claim his kingdoms, even though his mother Queen Joanna the Mad is still alive (and imprisoned). The new foreigner teenager king Charles, who was born and raised in Flanders, goes to Spain with his sister Eleanor and his Flemish advisers, but he is not very welcome.

Politics is a dirty and nasty game. Much has been said about Habsburg’s physical deformities due to inbreeding, however this has been nothing but part of the anti-propaganda that's been played against the Habsburg royal family for centuries. This propaganda was wide-spread across Europe by Habsburg's enemies i.e. Dutch calvinists, German protestants, English Anglicans, and French to undermine the hegemony of Charles's authority and power, given that he was not only King of Castile and Aragon but also Holy Roman Emperor, King of Germany, King of Italy, Lord of the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, Navarre, Two Sicilies, Duke of Burgundy, etc, etc., etc.; thus presented a direct threat to emerging circles of power such as orangists, protestants, German feudal lords, English anglicans, among others.
Fact is that thanks to Charles I of Spain, the Turks halted their expansion towards western Europe. On the other hand, there is historical evidence which shows secret pacts between Charles’s European rivals such as French Francis I, as well as William of Orange and Muslim Sultan Suleiman The Magnificent, to attack Charles’s kingdoms (Inalcik, 2001). (English Queen Elizabeth I followed Orange’s political approach years later)
Historical fact also is that Charles I of Spain yearned to carry out his “Universitas Christiana”. (A project based which visioned a united Christian Europe). A project perhaps too ambitious… Capable only to be dreamt by one of the Greatest and most powerful Emperors of all times - Charles I of Spain.
Gracias por subir los vídeos. Llevo años queriendo ver la serie.
FYI - Florida and Alabama State flags have Charles's Imperial cross of Burgundy on them ;)

Erroneous, the biggest of the period is Sultan Solomon. Charles hid behind the castles. He never stood against Solomon. In a letter he wrote to Charles, he humiliated incredibly, saying 'Even your wife is more brave than you'. but he can never come across Suleiman. Solomon travels in her country. Charles hides behind the crowd. Solomon was the emperor, the king of kings. It cannot be compared to Charles.

No way dude. Suleiman isn’t even in the top 3. At this time the most powerfull kings and emperors were John the third of portugal, and Charles the first of spain. The ottoman empire was not on the level of portugal and spain in the 16th century. As an example, portugal blocked the ottomans from the indian ocean by always beating them, and the spanish (Holy League) beat the turks in the mediterranean, blocking the ottomans from the atlantic ocean. The same thing happened in the siege of mazagão, where the portuguese, heavily outnumbered (as always) defeated the ottomans, and it is considered that, that was the moment the ottomans gave up going to the atlantic (together with the battle of lepanto).

@@diogobarata6346 thank you for actually sharing some truth. Spain and Portugal were definitely superior during that time, and Spain used to fight in numerical disadvantage too, but because it's Spain, it's not well known abroad, the best you can get is a mediocre Wikipedia article. One example is the Sieges of Oran and Mers El Kébir of 1563, the initial numerical advantage was already remarcable, but it's the initial assault of the 100.000-strong Ottoman army (including janissaries) against the 200 Spanish arquebusiers located in the Torre de Todos los Santos and the ending of the siege that stands out. In the first assault, the Ottomans couldn't defeat the 500 times inferior Spaniards by assault for weeks, and they had to wait for the Ottoman fleet's cannons to take down the wall to actually being able to make the Spanish withdraw. The ending of the siege envolved the more than 90.000 remaining Ottomans against the less than 500 Spanish remaining, a numerical difference of 200 to 1, many assaults involving thousands were repelled, the Spanish resisted and the Ottomans withdrew.
Another example was during the battle of Jemmingen, 1568. During a certain point in the battle, as described by Bernardino de Mendoza, 26 Spaniards defending their position at a bridge were attacked by a force 4.000 Dutch sent by Nassau, and for more than half an hour, the Spanish held their ground, and eventually the Dutch withdrew. As I said, of these events there's little, if something. For example, about the battle of Jemmingen, even the Spanish wikipedia there's barely anything, the only reference of the event I write about is that a force "smaller than 50" repelled the 4.000 Dutch. And these events are against professional European armies, including janissaries, and not some random militarily weak nation, in India or America, for example, that's why I didn't mention Penco, 1550, where the 100 cavalry from a bigger army were enough to defeat the 20.000 Mapuche. One question though, wasn't Mazagao against the Moroccans, not the Ottomans?

      @@diogobarata6346 Who's top 3 then...if Suleiman's not there.
Also, I must contend that Suleiman was more powerful than Charles, not by a lot, but there's a small gap there. The realm of Charles...wasn't a singular realm like with the Ottomans. Charles ruled several domains...I shouldn't tell you the inherent disadvantage to ruling a patchwork of states compared to that of ruling a continuous singular land empire. Disregarding the HRE (which frankly...was powerful...but not particularly potent and effective, there was no official army and no system of taxation, completely decentralized), Spain was his next big dominion. But Spain also was troublesome, Spain was a multitude of kingdoms held together in personal union, AGAIN, its different than the Ottomans. Inefficient taxation and insufficient political control in his territories made Charles not as strong of a ruler as he appears on paper. Powerful and prestigious he was...its closer to a paper tiger than something coherent.
Meanwhile, Suleiman controlled an empire situation at the heart of the world, with a great capital city, and the riches of the world passed through it, not just a competent military system. Charles was a worthy adversary in the same tier, he was just lower on that tier.
