I made my whole studio Dante and now everything is always on. I have templates in Protools and Ableton so I neve have to stop to think. I also have my vsts and VIs on VEP servers so they are also always available. I don’t regret moving to a networked studio at all. Love it
@@MBO1991 I’d start with the tutorials from VEP here on TH-cam and join the VEP forums. Any questions I have had they have helped me. I’m running in a slightly more advanced configuration. I use the VEP devices both in standalone with Dante and as client instances. The difference for me comes down to the fact that I also use a lot of analog synths over rtpmidi and it made it helpful to use VEP that way as well. Anyway, it’s worth doing it and being a nerd about it. Learning a little networking and building good VEP servers. JunkieXL is a good example of where it could go.
Great setup!!! I love the videos and tips. I’ve been doing my home project “studio” for 20 years and watching your videos has helped me improve my game tremendously! Love the SSL controllers, back to using my ears has been a life changer! Thanks 🤘
Great video! Such an under rated part of a good hybrid studio is the layout. I'm writing and sound designing all day long and most everything I need to interact with is within 5 feet from me. Cables, preamps, instruments, headphone, etc.
Been watching since the first build, it’s hard to convey exactly how much of an inspiration you’ve been for my recording journey. The value from your channel over the years cannot be overstated. Thank you!!
Love it! I've certainly copped a lot of ideas and am a massive proponent of the always on / always ready to let creativity flow and let the gear be there, but out of the way.
I'm glad you found use for Ferrofish A32 Pro too. Was going to say, for people that can't quite stretch to Antelope Orion / Galaxy 32/64, Ferrofish Pulse 16 and A32 are great value. Useful for studios on a tighter budget that need quite a bit of I/O. I use a Ferrofish Pulse 16, and with my Audient ASP800 and SSL Octo Pure drive over ADAT. And with the 16 analog ins, I can make it work ... for not that much money. It gives me a relatively high channel count (32), and lots of inputs for stereo synths, drum machines and samplers. And it's an expandeable system, with MADI / DANTE. I guess one point on the mic pres at mix position vs. away is that if you were starting out from scratch, you could choose to stick with 500-series pres only. Then keep them on the desk. There's plenty of great 500-series mic pres, CAPI VP28, Neve 1073 LBP, Avedis MA500, Sphere Fab 500 etc... There's also space efficient units like SSLs Octo Pure Drive, that's 8 channels in 2u.
Dude this was great! I'm in the middle of setting up my own hybrid setup, it's getting quite complicated ha, so this was helpful, I like that you are just labeling things in batches, that's a great firggin idea! would you be able to actually walk through the connections with the camera by chance?
Hey Andrew Nice job on this video and also I love your set up and hopefully sometime in the future I’ll be consulting with you in regards to setting up my personal studio but again nice job. Thanks for the info.
I really appreciate this type of detailed breakdown of your setup. I have a question. Are there any issues with applying multiple hardware inserts on one channel? Or are you just applying one insert and then patching in multiple pieces of hardware using the patch bay?
Some people don't like the extra path of conversion, I don't hear any degredation or change when I use multiple. I pretty much only have one instance of using 2 HW inserts on a single channel which is the drum bus. Sounds great. The conversion on the antelope is excellent.
I rewired my whole studio ,to use less patch bays ,my console has over 48 inserts and sends ,so my external hardware is hardwired to my api ,I am finding myself using the hardware more frequently ,love it.
loved this vid! great info and also great to keep it SIMPLE AND STUPID PROOF. sometime I'm just tired and hungry and just take 30 minutes finding input and realize the wrong cable is plugged in. hahaha. great.
I'd like to see a video of this guy's studio. (Mine's open for a vid too btw. Although if anyone's interested you can see glimpses of it in my "Unknown Cosmonaut" music video.)
This is a very helpful video! I recently acquired a Galaxy 64 and plan to connect it tomorrow. I’m curious to know if there’s a specific hardware insert delay number that needs to be added to the Pro Tools settings. For instance, when using a hardware insert on a single vocal track. I understand that inserts on a bus or master bus generally don’t cause any delay issues with certain interfaces. Thanks!
Nope, that's the benefit of hardware delay compensation. This is specific to playback / mixing, when you add a hardware insert to a channel or bus the hardware does the compensation for you so you don't have to mess with pro tools at all.
Awesome! This is gonna be a big time savor as I will be connecting everything up with a hybrid workflow as well. I just traded my Apollo x16(2) + Apollo x8p(2) interfaces to VK for the Galaxy 64. Straight swap. It was a crazy deal they were having last month. And they through in the MRC controller for free which I will probably sale since I don’t do any surround sound mixing and I’m not sure I’d use it since I have the Audient Nero Controller. Will be checking out your other vids on the Galaxy as it’s a brand new galaxy for me (no pun intended lol)
Some really, really great advice here. Thank you Andrew! To be clear - I'm also going with the Galaxy 32 but until I can come up with the dough for another interface to run hardware inserts, until then, I can achieve the same result (of having all my outboard comps and EQ's ready to go and jump into "mixing" mode immediately after tracking) by using my console, with the out's on my converter spread across the channels on my console and my outboard gear plugged into the "inserts" on my channels and busses, yea?
Yes, you can do that, That's the classic way of mixing. You'll need to be able to monitor directly off the board while doing so and then you'll basically just print a stereo mix back in to your DAW.
Gotta say I go 19" because I hate how compact 500 series eqs can get... I mean ten knobs for an EQ at times! But man - the listening position is great point... always a compromise somewhere! I like the idea of prioritizing the mix position above all else
10:05 so I’m understanding correctly, you use pt’s I/O inserts all the time for your outboard? How do you eliminate unnecessary DA/AD conversions? Or am I misunderstanding?
Thank you so much for your content! I've been watching it all for quite some time. So, my question is: Are UA Apollo Interfaces and the Luna DAW able to use hardware inserts that won't make me want to pull my hair out? So far, I'm only finding that I have to menu dive to make it happen. It seems to be a pain in the butt. What say you?
Nope. Menu dive is the least of what you have to do. I made a video on my other channel about it a couple of years ago once i figured it out. But it was still too much of a pain in the ass to do that if I was on a session I'd just never do it.
@@itsstudiotime I’ve split my outputs ,I’m on UAD ALSO SO I split my outputs to go through my bus so I mix into 2 channels always ,Luna is a pain the ass ,but it’s all I got since 2006,everything is hardwired
Great video but can you please incorporate more shots of your gear as you talk. Please and thank you. i.e You were talking about faders and I wanted to see the faders. God Bless
I tried looking for audio interfaces that have hardware delay compensation, but they don't really show me a list, but rather how to fix it. I'm currently using a Scarlett 18i20 3rd gen and the only real delay compensation that is available for me is from the one inside the reaper insert tool, but I barely use it cause it still have some latency. Do you have any suggestions?
can we have the template for tracking and mixing please? I don't have all the gear, but I'd love and try to make a template with emulations and see where it takes me.
Haha I think I might have some eventually, likely as a part of the course. The purpose of the template is to remove setup time of creating tracks/busses/ and routing.
haha I've made a video where I breakdown the routing in the control panel software. No pdf on that, but this is the 2nd or 3rd video where I've kind of spelled it out. The other videos are demonstrating specific parts of it. Headphone mixers / routing, interface setup and routing, patchbay etc.

9:15 is it the DAW that have to have the hardware delay compensation or the interface?
Hey buddy thanks for the content. I hope youre doing well and feeling good 🙏🏽
Appreciate it!
Thank you Andrew. Can one get away with a hybrid setup with an interface that only has 4 in’s and 4 outs? And a patchbay?
Drew I live in Hendersonville can you do a tour of my studio?
NO, he is too busy now. No more tours in 2025.
Maybe 2026. Check back then.

You can always do 500 pres and comps with 19” EQs which will still all fit right within reach from listening position
Have you considered using one of the analog summing boxes in your setup? Like the 2 Bus +?
I used to have the burl b32 summing setup, that was when I was using the Apollos. It would be interesting to hear the difference in this setup.
@ I’m fascinated by the 2 Bus + because of its summing and built in color and parallel compression features.
10:05 so I’m understanding correctly, you use pt’s I/O inserts all the time for your outboard? How do you eliminate unnecessary DA/AD conversions? Or am I misunderstanding?
If you felt like you were losing quality you would just patch the chain you wanted in one insert.
@ for some God-forsaken reason, I thought you had you outboard plugged directly into your interface lol

Custom console desk from dangerfox
What interface do you use? It was not clear from the video
AA Galaxy 32 and FF a32 Pro..says it right there in the vid.
Yep Galaxy 32 with a ferrofish a32pro.
Why did you release this After i setup my hybrid studio??
I'm someone who uses an old Maono usb mic and pre-owned DT770 Pro with Focusrite Scarlett and that's it.
That's an Excellent start bro. Get cookin
