Fortunately Nijmegen in the picture, there are many beautiful cities in the Netherlands not only Amsterdam and The Hague, this is my beautiful city Nijmegen I have been living in England for a few years and have not been in the Netherlands for 2 years because of the corona I miss it well. When a real Nijmegen resident drives across the Waalbrug, we always say we're at home, that's how it feels too. Nice comment Thank you.

Thanks for showing Nijmegen to the world. I live there for 17 years now and fell in love with it. Some remarks from my side:
0:27 the statue is Moenen, which is the devil. He is part of a local saga. Moenen seduced Mariken (her statue can be seen at 14:57), but in the end love won
2:26 there are brushes that slow your bike down when you go down, and there is a little conveyor belt to help you go up. Especially for the heavier electric bikes
4:42 Yes, a lot of the old Nijmegen was destroyed by friendly fire. More than 800 people were killed, including children of a primary school. There is a monument of a swing to commemerate that
5:05 this is the Kronenburg Park, where Frank Boeijen sang about. You reacted to that song.
7:11 I gonna see Anneke van Giersbergen performe live in this church on 13 May 2022!
9:09 The bridge in the background is called De Oversteek (The Crossing). It is build on the spot where American soldiers crossed the river in rubber boats during WWII. 48 soldiers died. There are 48 lightpoles at the bridge that go on one by one and every day of the year at least one veteran and civilians walk that sunset march to honour the American fallen soldiers
9:59 The most famous Nijmegen song goes like this: “Even if I have to crawl, go barefeet. I want to hear St. Steven bang just one more time”
10:09 this park used to be a parking place full of cars
12:50 this is museum De Bastei with old Roman and medieval remains
Every year Nijmegen has the world famous 4 Days Marches (with 7 days of crazy parties, including the Snollebollekes). If you are here the third week of July, you can party with us!

HCR, our country is SMALL, so any growth... anywhere, needs to be organized perfectly. That is WHY the entire Netherlands is so utterly organized. It's the best use of space. NL is tetris to perfection, more or less. Quaint... it's just ...VERY small and every little bit of space we get, we care for, so it looks nice.

The open air museum is great. It is basically a big park with all kinds of historic houses, a cloths washing business, a primary school of about 200 years ago, a mill, different historic factories, middle-aged toys to play with. And people dressed up in clothes of that area, show how life was in that time.
You can have a nice stroll in the park, have coffee with cake on a degrade and check out a part of Dutch history.

Airborne crossed the river in small boats and bypassed the German defence, (they call it up to this day Little Omaha, refering to Omaha beach DdAy 6 june 1944), crossed the river in small boats in full sight of the German defenders, attacked the main bridge from the north, while the British Grenadier Guards attacked from the south, that was how Nijmegen was liberated..... i will send you a vid. on discord with the famous Waalcrossing from the famous movie A Bridge Too Far. ...

This bridge is called De Oversteek, which means the crossing. At sunset a veteran crosses the bridge starting at the Nijmeegse side of the bridge. As soon as the citylights in Nijmegen turn on, the veteran starts marching over the bridge. On the bridge there are 48 light poles, one for every American soldier who died during the Waalcrossing on 20 october 1944. These light poles turn on one by one. At the end of the bridge the veteran goes down the stairs to a memorial monument with the 48 names. At this monument the veteran salutes to honor those who gave their lives for our freedom. Everybody is free to join the veteran. The sunset march takes place every day, 365 days a year. They have been doing this since 19 october 2014, so today will be the 2577 time the sunset march will take place. My dad is one of the veterans who walks the sunset march regularly, and when he walks I walk with him. On Facebook you can find it under Sunset March (beautiful pictures and video’s)
I’ve been watching lots of your reactions and getting the impression that you like the Netherlands. You even got an orange t-shirt 😉 So if you ever planning on visiting our beautiful country, I’ll be more then happy to show you around in Nijmegen, eat some mergpijpjes, and maybe we can also go to a concert (Ladies of Soul would be great). I like Nijmegen. I've been there a few times. Even though it's about 65 miles from where I live, it's part of the transit district that we have here, so if you have a local bus pass, you can also go to a few places in the Netherlands that are close to the border. It takes forever to get there, but there was a time when I didn't have much to do, so I didn't care about that. I've always wanted to go back there by car, but with Covid rules changing every week I postponed that trip to a later date.

LOL like your enthousiasm about Nijmegen...one of the oldest city on the east side of the country. Nijmegen has a university, is a nice place to be on the river de Waal, people are friendly, modest not as blunt and upfront as in Amsterdam or Rotterdam. The atmosfere of the city is openly progressive in many ways. Lot of different little shops wich emphasizes the variety of people living there.

@14:30 you can get a month museumcard for tourists as well, dont need a dutch residence for it, its a pretty permanent thing theres also similar things for other attractions where you pay a discounted lumpsum and then just get to pick and choose where to go, some citys like rotterdam have local things as well, if you do a bit of searching (im sure someone can help if you cant find) its worth the effort if you plan on doing multiple things, theres a whole budget to promote cultural activities regardless of peoples income and a good cooperation between the different musea and other attractions around ... and theres a lot of them, i would think you can probably get your moneys worth compared to full tickets in a day or 2

maybe small detail but...ok so there is this myth amongst non-dutch that the only way to talk proper dutch is to use the hard G...this is not the case for many dutch accents. Yes, some dutch people use the very throated G, the most dominant accent does this...but not all! Lots of Dutch people pronounce the G as a velar frigative (think pronunciation of the H in some british English variaties).

@@1993hermans 45.000 people do the walking.
1.5 million visitor to watch the walkers and to attend the summer festivities. For one week the center of the town is packed with festivities. It starts around noon with all kinds of childrens stuff, street theater, music etc, and it goes on to about midnight. There is all kinds of music everywhere. Friday evening is the visies. It is basically the finale of the 4 days walking march. Many walkers will visite then the center. You can recognize them by the careful way they walk (blisters) and by the medal they are wearing. Many, many nationalities. Nijmegen is in that week a very international city.

They find old stuff everywhere they dig here and by European treaty they are obligated to do archeological research. They even found a Roman mummy in a sarcophagus in a main street in the old town.
The birdhouses are close to where I live (I live outside of the old town but just). Old town is almost car free, so pretty quiet. Actually this area we cal the Benedenstad as the old center with the church is on a hill. I've seen some concerts in the church, including John Cale, it's used for other things than services.
