WOW! ive seriously been trying to understand the levels adjustments and the histogram for soooo long. I've seen so many tutorials, and this is by farrr the best! Thank you so much. The picture with the percentages is so good for the explanation. I appriacte this so much! Thank you!
Super happy you enjoyed this photoshop levels tutorial. You can get all of the images, color cards and my entire photoshop training could here - www.photosincolor.com/project/ultimate-photoshop-training-course/
Hi Ed. This is one of the most concise tutorials ever. Your presentation is fantastic and the graphic was perfect. And no piggin' diddle-dee either! Thanks.
@ Photos In Color Great video! Please help me. Adjust 2 point in Output level to decide black point and white point (dark to white) in Input level? Is it right?
You need to tell people WHEN and WHY use levels, and why use levels rather than curves or any other adjustments. BTW, your black white mapping example is very good.
Hi Ed, as usual a brilliant tutorial. Which do you prefer for putting hints of colour in the shadows and highlights, split toning in Lightroom or Levels in Photoshop? I can see in some cases levels are much more powerful than split toning but for shadows and highlights I think Lightroom would be the preferred option?
Loving the tutorials you are improving my photo editing so much. Many thanks. For this one, how did you take the photo so well with the bright background.
Dear Sir, first of all thank you the tutorial regarding adjustment level. I have a question on this matter. How to adjust Level in generally like decrease -10% and increase +10% (for example like your image shown in TH-cam. Means increment/decrement adjustment at all / generally. Appreciated for explanation and feedback . Best Regards Stefanus Warokka
How do you remove a shadow completely? I thought that was going to be part of exposure and contrast. Where would I find that video? Thank You for sharing all this information.
ro remove a shadow completely you are going to ave to do a lot of cloning in photoshop. Photoshop levels effects what is there in the image but what you wanting to o is completely remove a shadow, this is something very different. On a side, why would you want to remove a shadow. by removing something created by light you will probably leave the image looking fake.
Thank you so much, the last thing I want is for the end result to look fake. I guess the real answer is I will need to take another picture with better lighting. I really enjoy your lessons, you make it very easy to understand verses other videos I've found.
Your tutorial is very helpful. Thanks so much! p.s. I'm the founder of HomeSchool ThinkTank...clearly my designer knows what she's doing, but I need basic editing skills from time to time too!

Thank you for these awesome videos Ed, I learned a lot just by watching them. The sheet you use at 6:00 is awesome. Any chance to download it so I can use it in PS the same way you demonstrated? Thanks again and keep them coming!
You said "essentially" 47 times in this video and I lost the will to live at about eleven minutes in. That said, I love your videos and am essentially full of respect for your impressive PS & LR knowledge.
Hi Ed, thank alot s for the video you are really helpful and very knowledgeable so my understanding is 0 means purely black and 255 means purely whites and 1.00 is midway so its grey area so if we move 1.00 midtone to left we are exposing the highlights more so it becomes lighter and if we move it to the right we are exposing the shadows more so it becomes more black so it can do the changes for us in itself without us needing to move the slider on the far left and slider on the far right But can you please elaborate on why its 0 to 255 like i know 255 means highlights so its a high number but why 255 like the rgb color spectrum contains so many colors so why is it limited to 255. Let me know when you can thanks.
well that is a very technical question but here is a simple overview. Its to do with the way data is stored. a color has to be split into to save on space. RGB 0-255 takes up exactly 1 bite of data which is equal to 8bits. which is why most color is converted to 8bit data when saved to jpeg. I hope this makes sense.
+Photos In Color Cool thanks for that, so its to save memory and i remember in school my teacher talking about 256 so 0 which is the pure black one is added on to make it 256 so instead of 256 its 255. and both the 0-255 all together makes up 8bit data so basically the colors are crunched into that

its not really about crunching them or saving space, its just a type of color space. something color os captured in 8 bit other times its 14 or 16bit. we can see what more color with our eyes this is just a way for our computers to read these colors. But yes 8bit color depth is less that 16 bit.
I've realized that after I use the Levels Adjustment, my pictures get rejected from stock sites, such as Adobe and Shutterstock. Any ideas why? The problem always comes back as "posterization problems."
my pleasure. It is exactly to do with that. less to do with colors and more to do with how a computer renders and sees colors. Happy I have been able to help and you have enjoyed learning photoshop.

Hi sorry, so the color os itself captured the 0-255 color space and that can be done in 8 bit 14 or 16 bit, so 0-255 in 8bit 14 or 16 is how computers then read them and 0 being the black color and 255 being the lightest color that is why when the 255 side is exposed we get more highlights and the output levels changes where we get more or less red in this case o more or less blue as in the output level red start at 0 in the slider above the output level red starts at 255 but when we move the output level red can be at the shadows or vise versa red can be at the highlights and this is thanks to the computers reading for 0-255 for rgb color spectrum which can be done in 8 bit or 16 bit
I think we are getting wayyyyyy to deep into something that I really dont think matters much. Color lives in a 'space' and thats the important part. the greater the bit depth the greater the space. sRGB is the standard and that is produced in 255,255, 255. RGB. Outside of this I think you may need to speed to a professor or something. I really have git my knowledge limit and I dont want to just make stuff up. Love this in depth though process though.
Great video, thank you. Funny is that you lost me when you modified the image to warm it up, as I thought the colours in the original image were beautiful, especially how the blue in the shirt popped. But then, you said, "...wouldn't necessarily have done that because I loved the image as it first was...", which was instrumental in leading me to click "subscribe"! :)
That is something that is available in my Ultimate photoshop training course that is available on photosincolor.com. Happy you are enjoying learning from my photoshop tutorials for beginners.
Thank you. Once you got into the tutorial it was great, very well explained, however, I must say, I almost switched off in the first 20 - 30 seconds as I HATE over enthusiastic introductions that so many TH-camrs seem to find essential. I know many Americans do this and as soon as they do, I'm off to find someone else. You are have clearly got a great understanding of your subject and the ability to put it across well, but PLEASE cut out the rather peurile introductions and hyper-enthusiasm, they just detract from what you have to offer.
You kinda lost me on this Ed. You even stated that you liked the image the way it started, and I did too. Maybe you could've used an image that actually needed levels adjustments.
+TC Conner I can definitely see your point here. I will try to do this in the future. This was purely for demonstration purposes for the photoshop levels adjustment layer. I will try to use more appropriate photos in the future.
I absolutely agree with the comment here. You had me, then you lost me. You started out really good, then started to go into the nebulous, ridiculous aspects of the levels sliders...please keep it simple and direct.
wooow I've watched at least 10 of your tutorials till now... they are so clear and easy to follow. thanks
Why I did not watch this two years ago? ! This is awesome!

Thank you, your tutorial has made using levels very clear,
You need to tell people WHEN and WHY use levels, and why use levels rather than curves or any other adjustments. BTW, your black white mapping example is very good.
Although the image was not a very good example but you did explained the adjustment levels perfectly. I like your videos Ed!

Subscribed!!!
Excellent work explaining levels. I would like to incorporate the test photo in my own courses. How can I request permission to use it?
Well you can write to me on the website but you would have to license the images for use. It would be a cut of each sale.
Photos In Color Great! I sent an email a couple days ago and will follow up. Happy to look into licensing it.
super tnx!
+Andrea Carretta fantastic. Happy you enjoyed learning about the photoshop levels adjustment layer.
hey sorry for sounding dumb but I'm trying to get on to photography what's the name of this software for editing called

I've realized that after I use the Levels Adjustment, my pictures get rejected from stock sites, such as Adobe and Shutterstock. Any ideas why? The problem always comes back as "posterization problems."
No worries thanks for the help my teacher said its to do with Binary so 24 bit is 256 colors something along the lines of that but thanks
my pleasure. It is exactly to do with that. less to do with colors and more to do with how a computer renders and sees colors. Happy I have been able to help and you have enjoyed learning photoshop.
