  • Unfortunately for Guy Ritchie and RDJ... this version of Sherlock Holmes did NOT go on to be definitive or even very memorable. Might be all the sins.

    Actually Sherlock Holmes in the books is a very skilled fighter. Having practiced Japanese martial arts, bartitsu, and yes even boxing. The fighter he faces in the movie is named Mcmurdo in the credits, and Irish fighter who Holmes fought a couple years back in the books and who he meets in the Sign of Four again and recalls Holmes's boxing prowess. So bonus to the movie for a bit of subtle reference to the books.
    Also, a good deal of how Holmes deduces is by looking at people constantly. Paying attention always to ones surroundings and taking details in. Sorry if I seem like nitpicking I was just chiming in.
    Although as a fan of the book I'd have to sin this movie because Irene Adler is nothing like how she is in the books.

    • @Phoenix5365
      @Phoenix5365 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +GeneralKenobi75 Well, to be fair, she only makes an appearance in a single story, just as Moriarty only features in two, I believe. (Doyle didn't want Holmes to seem inept by not being able to keep his nemesis from popping up again and again and again...)

    • @GeneralKenobi75
      @GeneralKenobi75 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Phoenix the-writer Even so in the books she's not Catwoman-esque master criminal. Her reasons are quite logical, she needed protection which is why she took advantage of the scandal.

    • @SethoMarkus
      @SethoMarkus 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +GeneralKenobi75 Thank you for pointing out the fighting prowess, I was coming here to make the same comment. Sherlock Holmes IS supposed to be a skilled boxer, and most likely would have engaged in street boxing matches. People tend to forget that Sherlock was often described as quite strong and near the peak of fitness.

      @@Logan_Baron In the book when he explained how he defeated Moriarty to Watson, he mentioned that he knows some moves from baritsu (that's how Conan Doyle called it, it's actually bartitsu), which is basically an English MMA. And yes, he's a fencer, a boxer, and is quite strong overall, here's an example from "The Speckled Band":
      “He seems a very amiable person,” said Holmes, laughing. “I am not quite so bulky, but if he had remained I might have shown him that my grip was not much more feeble than his own.” As he spoke he picked up the steel poker and, with a sudden effort, straightened it out again.

      ***** I don't like him because he doesn't quite fit the character's more serious side. He was extremely serious and calm. And also, the movie felt almost like an action film, and that really kind of sucks in a Holmes movie. :/ So he fits to an extent, but I don't really want a "Fun, modernized Holmes;" it feels like it defeats the point.

  • @Gullimann2
    @Gullimann2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +383

    Oh well guys, here we go...
    1. The 1800s are the 19th century - not the 18th.
    2. In the movie it is revealed that Sherlock and Watson called in the cops, which lets us assume that Sherlock already went ahead while the cops prepared their team, thereby giving him a good headstart. Also, based on the later scene where the cops piss themselves at the graveyard, I find it quite likely that they would wait for Sherlock and Watson to do all the work before going in. This explains both their late engaging in the scene and Sherlock arriving before they do despite being on foot.
    3. Assuming Moriarty is a well-known celebrity-status kind of guy and doesn't want to be recognized by some low-key bad guy who might end up in a jail cell and rat him out to the police, it is quite reasonable of him to wear a hooded robe whilst hanging out at a crime scene with several of such low-key bad guys.
    4. We all knew Watson was Watson. It seems a bit over-analized to state that the line "You're the doctor after all." was added in to let us know this guy is Watson, and not to be a cool Guy-Ritchie-ish line.
    5. Since guns where always rather unpopular in Britain, as they are highly restricted (and have almost always been), thereby making it hard to get your hands on one, it is actually very likely that only a henchmen-leader kind of guy would be equipped with one. If all of those guys had had guns, THAT would have been strange.
    6. Sherlock doesn't state how exactly he saw the glass because it would be unnecessary expositional dialogue, as we can all SEE how he was able to notice it quite well. The said line also fits him quite well, as Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes is a dickish cool-guy Sherlock Holmes, and this line is a lot cooler than a scientific explanation.
    7. The piece of glass is not sharp, it is pointy. While hiding a long pointy object in the lower part of your sleeve, it could not POSSIBLY stick you in the arm, as the pointy part is on the end, and your arm is touching the side. The only thing it WOULD stick is his sleeve at the elbow, which seems to be made of thick wool-ish stuff. Or, much more likely, it is just pointy on the outer end, which would make it stick nothing but an unattentive Watson if he moves in too close.
    8. Despite a lot that can be said about this action movie, it is definitely not forgettable. Show me another action movie set in this time period with a similar style... that's right, Sherlock Holmes 2.
    9. How is he going to escape, he is one dude wearing absurdly impractical black magic robes, and they have guns. Also, we know those guys shit their pants at the sheer thought of Blackwood apparently (which is a bunch of bullshit on its own), so the Bobby would definitely let go of him.
    10. The picture still shows the other two people perfectly well. And it is the only picture they have...
    11. How do you know how many shots were fired? Where you hanging out in the place even before the SCENE started, counting?
    12. Holmes is both good at deductive reasoning AND watching in the books aswell as most other depictions (if he was good at logical conclusion-making and as unattentive as an eleven-year old with a smartphone, how exactly would that do him ANY good?).
    13. How is your (quite frankly very humorous) remark concerning Sir Arthur Conan Doyle a sin for the movie?
    14. By showing her stuff he already knows, he shows her how small details matter, which in this case makes it completely unimportant if he KNOWS the conclusions to be true or not.
    15. Holmes is an asshole, and I like it.
    16. Why is no one paying attention to the well-dressed good-looking woman... who walkes in BEHIND everyone DURING a boxing match. I'm sure they'd all be able to smell her and randomly turn away from the fight and towards her... right?
    To how many Irish boxing clubs have YOU been, my friend? If there is one thing that is better than women, it is fighting.
    17. Why would the police give a shit about the other prisoners?
    18. It was not said at any given time that Sherlock had to ABIDE Blackwood's wish. He supposedly did so because he was intrigued.
    19. While you are right about the Geography fail, the shot you show as "London Bridge" is, in fact, Tower Bridge. Should have been quite obvious, as you just said they PASSED over London Bridge, and the Bridge in the picture is yet to be completed.
    20. Watson supposedly did not punch hard. And Sherlock is not the one to call others dicks...
    21. Complaining about the colar being too clean for such a long time in prison, whilst claiming that the teeth are bad because of British stereotypes... make up your mind, either colar and teeth are clean, or both are dirty from the long time in prison...
    22. Were SHOULD the David Crosby disguise be? In the bottom-most cupboard of some shelf in a dark and gloomy corner? Why? Everything is f**king trashed in that room, why should the toupé be neatly put away?
    23. The top hat is clearly not floating.
    24. Playing the violin without a bow, but rather pluckin it like a mandolin or banjo, is quite common practice in quite a wide range of folk music styles.
    25. That shed is, at most, 2,5 metres high. Sherlock is portrayed to be a skilled parkourer, rendering that height not only rather undangerous, but easy-to-jump. He would have gotten some scratches from the breakin roof, or at least some dust on his face though... which he does!
    26. "That's the Irene I know." referrs to her behaving all nicely before this happens. She didn't steal from anyone, and she didn't beat anyone up, did she? So this IS a reveal of some kind after Sherlock hasn't seen her for such a long time.
    27. The adhesive thing COMPLETELY explains how the tombstone didn't cave in... the adhesive holds the stone together, but is rather mild, so it can be broken open by force. How is that hard to understand again?
    28. A dude who has a reputation as a practitioner of black magic is hanged by the neck and then breaks open his freaking tomb? This is the 19th century. While I wouldn't exactly PISS myself if I was one of those cops, I'd CERTAINLY be reluctant to "do anything concerning Blackwood".
    29. He takes that watch secretly.
    30. Sinning the movie for the babble of an old man which is supposed to BE babble IN the movie.
    31. Perhaps the checkers are left over from a previous game of checkers. Or they are used as some kind of points / playing chips for the dicing? Anyhow, there are lots of ways this could be explained.
    32. Since Blackwood teased Sherlock before the hanging, it is likely he expects him to come after him. Why not send that big-ass dude just in case?
    33. How is the Frankzappenstein Monster a sin?
    34. Looking at this logically, Holmes should only be able to 10-sec-analize-and-take-down a guy if he is sneaking in on the dude and sees any noticeable weakness / plans the attack out OR has fought the guy for long enough to see a pattern and / or weakness in the man's physique and / or fighting style - none of which applies for this scene. This also irradicates the sin for earlier during the boxing match, when Holmes only uses his 10-sec technique after quite a while of normal fighting. His punches looked wack as hell, implying that he was simply testing the guy's response, which is actually a quite common thing amongst fighters.
    35. I've fallen like that quite a few times during parkour, and I've never broken a bone in my LIFE.
    36. You don't think they did anything arrest-worthy, yet in the next moment wonder what the bail for the guys who wrecked the shipyard might be... I'll have one big cup of logic, please.
    37. You cumming in your pants during a movie is now a sin.
    38. You not paying attention to the plot of a movie you are reviewing that is actually quite followable is now a sin.
    39. Why would you hide your secret black magic room behind the bathroom? Well, in Victorian London, the toilets were not in the bathroom. So there is NO WAY anyone would ACCIDENTLY F**KING STUMBLE INTO YOUR BATHROOM. Seems like a good place to hide a secret passage, the one room no one but you goes into... right? The bedroom would have been my second choice.
    40. A future ruled by rich white dudes is a sin... to this movie?
    41. No way the bad guy isn't super dead? If I were to BAZINGA-pop up right behind two people equipped with guns with a wall between me and them, I would... throw myself flat on the ground and roll away? I mean, they can't see him, and they ARE just shooting were his upper body would be, so... it is quite easy for him to NOT be super dead, right?
    42. So the shoes aren't distinctive because Zappo's had a whole page dedicated to those kind of shoes... I doubt Zappo's existed in the mid-19th century.
    Jesus, I'm finally through. You guys need to check your script before recording...

    Holmes participates in boxing, because it is one of the things that makes him a better detective because fighting can keep him safe in dangerous situations. Sherlock Holmes only knows things that are essential to solving cases, this is something he would need. So yes, he would box.

    About 3:31
    He actually does get jealous in The Sign of the Four, it's just really subtle. Watson writes like one sentence, forgets about it, and then it comes the final scene where Holmes says he can't congratulate him on getting married.
    So the jealousy.....you know........makes sense
    Also about 7:44, Holmes actually is really sensible to smells to the point he is even compared to a dog so he must have felt *something* off about the individual smells although, more realistically, I do think he would have had more time figuring out which smell it was really. But you know, it's a movie.
    12:16 Holmes cannonically is stoopid when he does experimentations for cases. He once almost killed a dog by poison (A Study in Scarlet) and, to make things worse, almost killed *himself and doctor Watson* (The Devil's Foot), so yes, he is stoopid but it is accurate

    • @thomaslongcore4996

      the "almost killing a dog with poison" was actually intentionally killing a dying dog with poison to put it out of its misery, in order to confirm that something was actually poison. The dog did actually die.

If they wanted to tack on one more fun action scene, why not do one consistent with the character's abilities for the rest of the film? This was like if in a Jet Li movie, he suddenly engaged in a slap fight like he had the martial skill of a 5th grader for exactly one scene. Honestly, it could still be an enjoyable bit on its own, but it'd be so out of place it shouldn't be a thing we're expected to take in stride.

      Joey Sung unless it's a sanctioned martial arts fight, aren't all fights chaotic street fights? This fight is fairly organized: ring, bookies, audience. It isn't like he's picking a bar right and it's a solid way for him to make money between jobs- as he does. Have you read the novels?

    • @joeysung311
      @joeysung311 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I've read a few, but none of them suggest that Holmes was the kind of guy to fight public prize fights in front of huge noisy crowds. Also, it's shown that Holmes is not really interested in money. I think he was quite wealthy or something. I think it looks a tiny bit ridiculous to see Holmes fighting shirtless in some 'chaotic street fight', and it's fair for Cinema sins to poke fun at it.

    I love these videos however there are a couple of things that I feel as though you don't know about Sherlock Holmes. For instance, Sherlock Holmes was a very skilled boxer who regularly boxed in underground rings. As for Holmes's sense of smell, he spent a number of years to become familiar with the sounds and smells of London, perfumes, tobaccos smoke and many other scents. Also Sherlock Holmes used a techniques which he called a mind attic where old sights and sounds can be recalled at will. This techniques also allowed him to erase information that was not relevant.

      Holmes was capable at times of being abrasive, rude, and superior, but the difference was 1) He actually was aware he was doing it, and 2) It wasn't his default mood. He was also capable of being a complete gentleman, and he did not ignore the social graces of his class. Both this movie and that blasted Sherlock series over-exaggerate single aspects of Holmes' character. The only interpretation that has actually come close to the books is the Granada series with Jeremy Brett. It was fairly faithful to the stories.

    10:01 A bit of clarification: The red star is not specifically a Pentagram ("Satanic star"). In western occultism, the five point star is the universal symbol for "magick". A Pentagram is the same symbol turned upside down to represent that its power comes from the underworld (which is ruled by the devil, or Satan).
    So you're still correct in adding a sin here because it should be a Pentagram if Blackwood is specifically practicing Black Magick.

    has to be said. everyone has a floating rib, it's just where the bottom one isn't attached like the rest. a well placed punch is easily enough to put almost anyone down, it's also where you should aim your elbow when you're in a sleeper hold as a softener to loosen your opponents grip before throwing them over your shoulder so you don't break your own neck.
    he isn't boxing (though he was a boxer in the books) he's using wing chun, you hit the harder spots with an open hand or with less force and a loose fist to avoid breaking your hand and being left defenseless.

Also, my country? What country do you think that is? If you're still assuming I'm American, then that's just something else you're wrong about. And by the way, plenty of people in England say arse. You used it at least twice before I called you out on its spelling.

      Go on. You wouldn't be the first person in the TH-cam comments section to lose an argument and then leave with your fingers in your ears pretending to have won said argument. Not to mention completely baseless accusation of childish behaviour on my part (I challenge you to quote one thing I said that could be considered childish). But it's fine, this is TH-cam! I've done nothing but offer reasonable counter arguments to what you've said. You on the other hand, restoring to insults and assumptions, seem more like the 12 year old. The fact that you're claiming to be an adult makes this even worse. But keep grasping at straws, it makes you look really rational and level-headed.
      Also, what are you talking about? There's nothing on my homepage.

    • @thomasp506

      I thought you said you were leaving. As for attacking my character, you busted out the "you must be 12" card without any real opportunity or basis, and used watching cartoons as though that actually qualifies as an argument. Out of all my subs, a whole two of them have anything to do with cartoons. Anyway, it's a pointless thing to mention since cartoons have been popular in practically all age groups for decades.
      You said you were certain I was a yank, again as though that actually constitutes an argument. Again, wrong. You being "certain" doesn't amount to much then, does it?
      Just to note, if you are going to pick at me typoing "restoring" instead of "resorting" as though it was worth laughing your arse off, then at least try to make sure your own spelling and grammar is on point. Your punctuation sucks, you keep using "your" instead of "you're", you end statements with question marks, and you spell "arse" like a yank. This whole time you've been straw-grasping and making assumptions just so you have a leg to stand on. You have nothing but delirious pride keeping you going, as you certainly don't have any substance.
      But for real though, so you seem convinced that you've somehow proven yourself superior in all of this. If that were true, you would be able to actually pick apart what I've said, not laugh at typos or browse my subs in a desperate measure to try and find some dirt on me. So why don't you just do what you said you would do, and leave and bury your head in the sand like you originally planned. Why are you still here? Better yet, you could be predictable and respond with the good old "didn't read any of that" response that's so popular with trolls on TH-cam.

    Sin 43: Sherlock was punishing himself for hurting Watson. Hence the slapping instead of disabling and allowing his opponent to tag him but not incapacitate him. "The Woman" was the only one that could jar him from his sorrow.

    Baker Street is in central West London - *not* north east London. Pentonville prison *is* in North London, but Holmes and Watson are on the north bank of the river passing tower Bridge heading East - which is a massive diversion and heading away from Pentonville, but it is still on the north bank of the river. I suspect that originally Blackwood was supposed to be held in the Tower of London, which is just ahead of their carriage, but that the prison was changed to pentonville. Maybe there was an objection made, as Pentonville is a closed prison now, but the tower is still in operation.
