I think the both driver should have to give each other space throughout the corner. So the attacker is entitled to space in the braking zone, the apex and the exit, as long as he is significantly alongside the defender. I would define "significantly alongside" as half of the car of the attacker has to be next to the car of the defender. This rule would only apply if it is a valid overtaking attempt. For the move to be a "valid overtaking attempt" the attacker has to be fully in control of his car, he has to be able to make the corner and not leave the track at any point. The defending car is allowed to change his line before braking but moving under braking is not allowed (this rule is already in place as far as I know). In order for the defense to be legal the defending driver has to be fully in control of his car, he has to be able to make the corner and not leave the track at any point. If the car attacking is visibly not "significantly alongside" the defending driver is allowed to take the ideal line. Of course I am just a F1 fan and have no clue how sporting regulations are made, so don´t take this too serious. I just want the rules to allow for great wheel to wheel racing and the only way to do it, is to force the drivers to give each other room. Because honestly even with gravel traps in place there still would not be any discouragement for the defending driver to not force the attacking driver off the road. They just have to make sure they themselves don´t run off the track. I hope that the clarifications shut the most obvious loopholes. The "significantly alongside" part should prevent drivers just sticking their nose in to then demand space. The "valid overtaking attempt" is there to exclude Hail Mary attempts and divebombs from being valid attempts (so no Verstappen Brazil 2021). And the rule that the defending driver has to make the corner and not go off the track is maybe the most important one, since at the moment this is basically allowed, as Verstappen proved in Austin this year (2024). Another example for that would be the crash involving Verstappen and Hamilton in Italy 2021. If it was about fair racing Lewis should have given Max more room. But in 2021 especially the racing at the front just consisted of somehow getting ahead for the apex and forcing the other driver off. Anyway, if you´ve made it this far, thank you for reading my idea. What are your thoughts, what would you change? How would you change to improve the racing?
I would add proper specification for penalties so that we can limit the amount of grey areas in judging them: for example, if the attacking driver makes a “dive bomb” from very far behind without the intention of making the corner, it should ALWAYS result in a 10 second penalty.
I still love the is the ahead at the apex idea because all i can think of is the one clip of Kyle Larson sending it and crashing at the Indianapolis road course
f1 is the only racing series which is that hard on tracklimits like watch gt3 races, a lot of people just go wide on many turns and noone cares because why should you
I mean, they should care because how much is acceptable to cut? If you can cut all of it then why go around the track lol. Just go around the finish line in a donut 60 times.
The rules should be that if you are ahead at the point that you accelerate you have the right of the corner, but you must accelerate at a reasonable place at time
Honestly the penalty system is really useless, I think they should implement a slow down penalty when ever someone passes track limits like they do in the Porsche Carrera Cup series. It will also make the races more interesting
I was falling apart laughing so much! Well done Sir! Also thanks for (twice) showing the stock car pass in the dirt from my boyhood home Riverside International Raceway! Arguably the best Race Track EVER! Premium Content as usual! Three cheers: Dan! Dan! Dan!

Doctors say my brain rot is completely gone, I just received half a million pounds and I got so many b***** Thank you dan for showing us the way. I never knew life was so difficult because I didn't watch the long form videos
Racing rules require a bit of ambiguity to encourage racing. You can't have a rule like ahead at the apex owns the corner. Not sure when that rule became a thing but as far as I can remember, it was if a car is significantly alongside then they deserve racing room and a driver not leaving room resulted in a penalty.
@@DanNoSkill No worries mate. I know you were busy growing that beard. 😂 So are your boys going to win the constructors championship? I can live with that as long as Max gets the drivers.
Easy. If you're more than halfway alongside in the corner EXIT, then you are entitled to space. Basically, if at the exit of the corner there's a car alongside yours, you must give them space.
I think what the FIA should do, is put 8 sensors on every car, one on every quarter of the cars, and use a 50% overlap system (if 2 cars side by side each have 2 sensors detecting the opposite car) then whoever pushes the other car off would get penalized. It's a concrete rule
See I guess I'm a bit older than the target audience for this video, I started watching F1 in the 90s. Then every circuit had gravel or grass on the outside, which would either pitch you into a spin or get you completely stuck and out of the race, so drivers just didn't deliberately go off track. I think that would be the real solution, but I also understand that F1 now co-exists with other series like MotoGP where tarmac run-offs are preferred. So it's hard to know what the solution is. My favoured idea is to give each driver 3 strikes at the beginning of the GP. Each time they cross the line and they don't have a valid reason (like taking avoiding action because a car in front of them has spun) they lose a strike. Once you've lost all three, one more infraction gets you a 10 second penalty. One more gets you a 25 second penalty. Any more after that and it's the black flag.
Honestly I think they should just always be forced to leave a space, and that every corner has that room, or that they equip the cars with flame throwers ya know standard things @DanNoSkill
There is too much crying in the fanbase and it painfully obvious most Twitter fans heads would explode when Senna would still drive. Or if they ever rewatch the early days of Hamilton ands Vettel.
The penalties should only happen if a driver forces another off track. They're basically pushed out of play which is unfair when it comes to defending. The new issue is telling the difference from a driver who's forced off, to one who drives off. But then why did they drive off? This whole Apex thing is dumb as it asks for stupid divebombs and crashed.
Why do we even have a rule that allows someone to have the right to a space and push someone else out of the track? If someone is on your inside/outside and already occupies that space you probably shouldnt try to occupy it yourself. What i mean is that it should be up to the driver that overtakes to get alngside the other. And after that it should be on both drivers to always leave enough space for eachother to get through the corner safely. You know, kindof like every racing sport ever.
there's literally a rule that states at all times you must allow space for other cars ;....so this apex shit is just that shit ....its just another time red bull break rules because they say the rules need clarity no the rules already say you must leave space. their point is it doesn't say it in that exact bit about apex which is true but nowhere does it say that all rules go out the window during overtaking ....people have been saying max is a master using the rules to his advantage....no the fia haven't be enforcing the rules properly that's why he's been getting away with it
@@callumsewellukulele absolutely true, if I were a driver id try and play the rules, I just find it annoy people say this apex stuff like that supersedes every other rule which is just silly and you're right its up to the fia to enforce which for some reason with max they haven't been
