Took my 1290 in today for a service and had a few hours on one of these. Felt a lot smaller than my SDR, and much lighter. I was impressed by the motor and electronics, it had the power parts catalogue thrown at it including the Akrapovic end can, the seat was like a plank of wood. Going up the gears you just opened it up and changed, going down it felt like you had to try and match the engine revs to the speed, too much speed and it wasn't happy. Nice little bike though.
Another great vid 👍 my bro has recently purchased one of these I'm really impressed with the quality of finish. I also agree about the rear end but he's just fitted an evotec tail tidy removed the rear pegs & grab rail & it looks spot on now. Jury still out in the tyres though
A lot of new bikes have cheap tires and suspension - it's where manufacturers save money - the BMW R9T comes with non adjustable suspension on most models. KTM have there own suspension outfit WP - all other reviews say it's well set up - i think you might be heavier than average :) - great review - it's a nice bike - i gotta try one.
What you said about disabling ABS and Traction Control on the MT09 in order to wheelie it is wrong. You just have to turn TC down 1 notch. ABS and TC still works fine.
US Warranty: "This warranty covers only the engine, frame and swingarm. No other components of the motorcycle are covered by any warranty, expressed or implied and are sold “as is”" Now that's confidence in a quality product.
Great vídeo, thank you! I just don't agree with you in how this KTM looks. For me, it looks superb! I did see the concept bike, looked awesome too, of course, but it was just a concept,... this version for the public nailed it, in my opinion. Cheers, keep the good work!
My first KTM Duke 125 did the same and after one year and a half the engine died. Now I' ve given them a second opportunity and bought a Duke 790 the has a oil leak after 100 km...definitely I'm not going to buy a KTM anymore (or at least in the next 20 years).
@@carlosgomismartin9337 I bought a Honda CB125R, and it's been faultless. I've been training with the Honda RIDE Academy in Chester, mainly because they use brand new CB650Rs, and the people who run it are the best in the business, and are hand-picked. When I complete the Honda course, I've got my MOD2 on Monday, they give you £500 off a new bike. For my next bike I was looking at a Triumph Trident 660, an Aprilia Tuono 660, or my favourite the Honda CB650R. They've just got some 2021 CB650Rs in Smiths Chester, and I've been having a good look at them, they're very nice. I've considered other bikes like the KTM 790, or a Yamaha MT-07, but, they all have their faults. The Trident 660 is a bit small for me, and the Aprilia Tuono is too expensive, there are reliability problems, and a long wait for any parts if you need them. Also, the KTM and Aprilia dealers are thin on the ground, and miles away from me. Thanks for the info on the problems you've had. I'll think I'll definitely go for a new 2021 Honda CB650R; I love the bike, the insurance is not too bad, it's cheaper than an MT-07, or a Tuono, but best of all - I know it will start in the morning!
@@soulrebelno1 My brother has the CB650R, bought in April 2019, with 15K Km and stil is going like the first day, zero problems. Honda is always a trusty option. I've talked with so many people that bought the KTM Duke 790 and practically everyone got a problem in his first 15K km (engine stops, oil leaks, lights...). And is very sad because I wanted that my next bike was the superduke 1290, but with these experiences I've totally changed my mind.
@@carlosgomismartin9337 Same here, I keep hearing about the reliability problems, so wouldn't buy a KTM. Saying that, I would love a new KTM 1290 Super Duke, but only if I could afford it, and I had more than one bike! But, it's totally unsuitable for my needs, and I would never use its full potential. Lamb Chop Rides got rid of his 2014 KTM 1290 Super Duke One for similar reasons (th-cam.com/video/QTAlUcjJwMs/w-d-xo.html). I don't think you can go far wrong with a bike from one of the big four Japanese manufacturers: Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Surprisingly, 40% of BMWs will require a repair within the first four years of ownership, which I found a bit shocking. After riding around on a few different 2020 CB650s for a while during my Honda training, I'll probably be going for a brand new 2021 Honda CB650R, it's a better bike compared to say a Yamaha MT-07 or a Suzuki SV650. The CB650R now comes fitted with a Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFF-BP) 41mm USD forks up front, so the handling will be even better. Would've liked a nice TFT, but at least they've tweaked the LCD dashboard. The engine is now EURO5 compliant with no loss of top end power. Plus, it's received a few other tweaks, like internal water channelling from cylinder head to cylinders, which does away with most of the exterior hoses. It's a well proven in-line four, which is refined and reliable, and very smooth around town. But, open it up, and it will howl and scream, and almost snap your head off, as I found out - it's great on a motorway!
M WJ82 I’m 6ft 4 105kg with long legs and the can ride it fine. I used to own a speed triple 955 and the seat it a bit higher and the bars are closer. It feels great and i doubt it’ll be to small for you.
@@gss6531 yeah I realize that, but I mean I fucking love the bike and have had such an amazing time with it. I could def pay less for one but it was definitely worth the money
Street Triple 765r.. Tested both bikes and bought the Triple, fantastic bike, feels faster, smoother and handles better, plus the KTM has pretty common faults with cutting out and with the quickshifter.
Awesome review! and yes, THAT happened to me too! it shuts down(stalled) in the middle of my driving, I was like, wtf??? sent it to the dealer they checked all, pretty much nothing was bad with it. Although did a bit of research and the KTM´s have issues with the kickstand sensor. after taking it to the dealer, never did it again. greetings from Mexico.
most people don't have the money to do all those mods after paying for the bike - if it's not going to be reliable you can just get the Kawasaki twin or the new Suzuki SV or just a Yamaha MT07.
Different category. Nothing in the 650cc range offers anywhere near the amenities, controls, options. Also 800 has about 30 more horsepower, better bones (forks, brakes) for modding.
Cheers for the smashin' review, LC. It certainly sounds like it ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to a do-it-all, fun, modern motorcycle. It looks like great value-for-money - until it comes to the upgrades that'll exploit the bike's full potential. Then again, we both know that very few standard machines will ever fully satisfy our personal requirements: so them upgrades catalogues will forever be our friends. All-in-all, I do quite fancy one meself. BOOOOOOOOM! 👍
It's just my opinion - based on grunty, supermoto-style motorcycles. The new Street Triple is a brilliant bike for the money (including the higher spec options) but I'd personally go for a used Speed Triple if I was in the market for a 3-cylinder naked. We pays our money, we takes our choice.
gazzafraz how did you find the throttle ? I Keep hearing about it being a bit snatchy... I'm seriously considering the 790 and coming from a gsr600 which can be well snatchy unless your ragging it hoping the 790 is not too bad. I think the black and grey paint looks great
I traded in my Gsr 750 for the 790 and find the throttle fine just feels like a completely different bike to the Suzuki test ride one you will love it. Took MT09 Sp,Ducati 821 and street triple rs out before i made decision and this beat them all for me.
Glen whyte If you're just cruising, you can easily turn the bike into street mode and the throttle feels just fine. In sports mode it's too snatchy for traffic and normal street usage though...
Great review. I was really impressed until you raised the issue of the suspension … which is why I love the Superduke GT. Yep, a shed load more money but the suspension is awesome, and that, for me, makes it worth it.
Yo, the reason your Quickshifter is cluncky is most likely due to the parameters for the QS being wiped on the first service. I was experiencing the exact thing you mentioned about not being able to shift down. It's probably not auto blipping for you either if you listen carefully. Apparently KTM never included a step to reload base paramters for the QS. As such the techs working on my bike didn't realise it was required, and I think I may be the only one in my area on a 790 Duke so they had no prior knowledge. Gave it back to them for 30min and it was fixed. Your QS should be as smooth as using the clutch normally, just much faster. If it's not take it in for an inspection. Also the point about tyres, I feel anyone who really cares about tyres already has a strong preference for what they like, and they're likely to swap to their preferred tyre no matter what came on the bike. IMO the Maxxis tyres are perfectly fine, no slip except under WOT, but I do live in Australia, so it's likely a lot easier to get heat into the tyres.
When it cut out at 15:20 that same thing happened to me. And just before it happend we did the same thing. A little throttle blip and engaged clutch. Strange.
Nice one Chopsy - I pretty much agree with everything you said...but personally find the looks a bit "meh" - can't argue with the value though can you!
I think it looks really good in real life when you did the standard mods like Aftermarket tail and mirrors and remove the footpacks of the second seat...
Seams to be a lot of contradictions on this machine ,you say the suspension is bad when most say it does very well even on crap roads , the tyres are pretty good maxxis items according to most other tests and after seeing what jezza did on them I'm not sure I have the skill set to disagree ,then the brakes are made by Juan brand a very well respected brand fitted to a few wsbk teams I'm led to believe. In context with the mto9 the ktm suspension is better by far as are the brakes and tyres I think are more personal choice ,there's not really a bad tyre out there these days just even better ones . Thanks for the review.
Agreed! I just thin people like to complain about brakes and suspension because it isn`t a brand name like brembo/öhlins so it instantly a "budget" part. Actually is not as simple as that. Bothe are perfectly fine for this bike.
Coming from a guy who has an MT-09, I'm actually extremely interested in the 790 Duke. I'm a lover of twins, especially the lumpy firing order twins. I know the 790 doesn't have the same horsepower as the MT, but it's not an extreme difference. I bet that 790 has a beefy midrange, maybe even more than the MT. What's your thoughts? That thing just sounds mean under throttle. Has a bit of a whirr too, like a gear set inside the engine.
@@boomerhgt You're not talking my language. I'm into engineering, details, cause/effect, maintenance, troubleshooting, analysis, design, science, physics, etc.
Chops you are making my life difficult. Just when I thought the Super Duke 1290 could be my next bike you tempt me with this creation. Looks like the Super Duke demo tomorrow might have to include the 790 as well!
The 790 has all the power you can use on public roads and in my province falls into the same insurance class as my KLR 650. The Duke was a revelation compared to my KLR, which I was perfectly happy with before I bought the KTM. If the KTM is a scalpel then the KLR is a ladle. Still love the old beast, however; It's far happier in city traffic than the Duke and far more practical for touring.
Well done.. The power commander is forbidden on street but with Coober we may have a solution especially for low rpm. The tires... yeah.. A road 5 or metzeler maybe better. The downnshift is cluncky as you mentioned. For the exhaust I don't like the sound at idle but sounds better at 6k (better than the akra).
I have watched every review on the KTM 790 Duke and this one was by far the best! Well done! I've been thinking about selling my 2013 Triumph Daytona 675R and buying a middle weight standard with some decent electronics, good looks, and a killer exhaust note. I was considering the Ducati Monster 821, Triumph Street Triple 765 R or RS, or the KTM 790 Duke.. Of the three bikes I mentioned which one would you choose?
Yeah its tough, I think I would take this as suspension can be sorted, overall bike quality is better than the MT plus has all the toys standard. Its not a deal breaker the electronics but the ability to turn off traction and wheelie control is a must for me. The MT SP is also more expensive remember
The 1k pounds extra isn't worth it compared to the normal mt09 unless u really like that sp color! With a revalve on ur standard mt09 ur as fine as the sp!
When they are working....stunning. But it's a ktm, so make sure you buy one new enough to have warranty....or buy a Yamaha MT09 that won't break. My 2018 Duke has required a full engine rebuild at 1850miles. Took my dealer three months to complete the work and they returned it with a coolant leak....it's currently back at the dealership. Gutted. Will be parting company with it soon I think, once you've have a bad experience like this, you lose the love and faith.
Nice one. I rode one of these the other day, absolutely loved it although next I did the 1290 straight after. I'm still wondering which one to buy haha.
After owning 2 Triumphs (Speed & Tiger) I am looking for another bike and brand. The KTM 790 seems to fit the bill. I'm so glad Choppsy got to review the 790. His weight and build is near identical to mine so ergonomics shouldn't be a problem if he's ok riding one. Just need some new rubber and rear suspension re-valving from the looks of it.
I’m loving the bike more and more, have already ridden 5000km plus 2 trackdays on my! The front brakes are surprisingly good on the track and the front suspension hasn’t been dipping into corners either yet. Let’s see when speed gets higher. But hey, check out my track vids for yourself and see! Cheers
Oh man this is going to come in $1500 cheaper than the Striple S and around $5500 cheaper than the Striple RS in India. I've wanted the Striple for years, dare I say the R is my dream bike, though sadly unavailable here. The S is too stripped down here and the RS is mental expensive. This is such great VFM that my wallet may win over my heart. All KTM need to do is stick to equivalent pricing with the West, which they have done so far and they can shut up and take my money.
Wow, How are you recording the bike sounds without wind noise. I love mine, thanks for the review. I agree, they messed up the backend and not the most handsome of bikes but so much fun and confidence building a real bratt in traffic.
I just watched you brilliant review (and filming) of the 2020 Street Tripple R. Which bike would your money be spent on out of the two. I am toying with either of them at the moment. I would very much value your view. Thanks, Lee
I was waiting for this bike after they showed the prototype. I was so disappointed with how it looked when they showed the final version that I gave up on it and bought a z900 even though it has no electronics. Besides, I feel that a lot of the electronics are just gimmicky sales points that are waiting to fail on you years down the line. The z900 may only have ABS but I've managed to ride for the last 15 years without ever needing traction control, anti wheelie and launch control.
I'm not really one for making video reviews. But have a look at my instagram for how my z900 looks now. I do plan on doing a walk round video to show the accessories I've fitted though. instagram.com/motomatt46
The stuff is there if you need, and out of the way when you don't. The added complexity is a concern- so far no problems regarding that on my pretty complex machine.
I think it doesnt have all the bling with suspension and brakes yet, because KTM are maybe saving that for a potential 790 DUKE R, as they did with the 690 duke.
Great, real world review thanks for being so thorough. I test rode one of these again today and I'm pretty sure it will win out against the Street Triple R (my other choice) as the riding position and value proposition seem a little better for me (I'm 6'2"). I have read about issues with excessive heat from the left side of the engine (an issue as I live in sunny Sydney) and some gremlins in the box ie false neutrals etc. Did you experience any of these and how did you find it at highway speeds? Thanks

Great video as always Mr Chops! that's a lot of bike and tech for the money compared to the 701 and 690!!
Great review! My son will acquire one of these soon. Safe riding man!
US Warranty:
"This warranty covers only the engine, frame and swingarm. No other components of the motorcycle are covered by any warranty, expressed or implied and are sold “as is”"
Now that's confidence in a quality product.
That is a deal breaker for me.
Not true, my dealer covers it all
Here's to hoping KTM put that 790 engine in a supermoto bike.... that would be a weapon
KTM haven't but someone made a 1290 offroad!
Great vídeo, thank you! I just don't agree with you in how this KTM looks. For me, it looks superb! I did see the concept bike, looked awesome too, of course, but it was just a concept,... this version for the public nailed it, in my opinion.
Cheers, keep the good work!
Ahhh the sound !!! Great review btw !
KTM reliability strikes again! The bike cutting out at 15:19 is a well known issue, check out the forums.
I absolutely LOVE this bike, I can't wait to get my Bike license and work my way up to it. Hope I am not too big for it, as I am 6ft 5
M WJ82 I’m 6ft 4 105kg with long legs and the can ride it fine. I used to own a speed triple 955 and the seat it a bit higher and the bars are closer. It feels great and i doubt it’ll be to small for you.
The value for money here is outstanding!
I just bought a 2020 with 1200 miles for only 9k, such an amazing deal
@@williambewley7948 They're like 7k now :O
@@gss6531 yeah I realize that, but I mean I fucking love the bike and have had such an amazing time with it. I could def pay less for one but it was definitely worth the money
Agree with you Chops on the exhaust / back of the bike.
Now having tested the new Street Triple 765 would you have the Duke or the Triple ? And why ?
Thanks
Street Triple 765r.. Tested both bikes and bought the Triple, fantastic bike, feels faster, smoother and handles better, plus the KTM has pretty common faults with cutting out and with the quickshifter.
Awesome review! and yes, THAT happened to me too! it shuts down(stalled) in the middle of my driving, I was like, wtf??? sent it to the dealer they checked all, pretty much nothing was bad with it. Although did a bit of research and the KTM´s have issues with the kickstand sensor. after taking it to the dealer, never did it again. greetings from Mexico.
Nice review, good ride footage - Nicely done!
Your right- it sounds phenomenal!!!!!
most people don't have the money to do all those mods after paying for the bike - if it's not going to be reliable you can just get the Kawasaki twin or the new Suzuki SV or just a Yamaha MT07.
BOOOOOOOOM! 👍
"Great value for money" Dafuq? Might as well just get the new Street Triple R in that price range.
Yes its a really nice bike, Street Triple also fantastic though (well the RS was) its would be a close call between the two but RS is a lot more $$
It's just my opinion - based on grunty, supermoto-style motorcycles. The new Street Triple is a brilliant bike for the money (including the higher spec options) but I'd personally go for a used Speed Triple if I was in the market for a 3-cylinder naked. We pays our money, we takes our choice.
Two days till I pick mine up. Loved it on the test ride
gazzafraz how did you find the throttle ? I Keep hearing about it being a bit snatchy... I'm seriously considering the 790 and coming from a gsr600 which can be well snatchy unless your ragging it hoping the 790 is not too bad.
I think the black and grey paint looks great
I traded in my Gsr 750 for the 790 and find the throttle fine just feels like a completely different bike to the Suzuki test ride one you will love it.
Took MT09 Sp,Ducati 821 and street triple rs out before i made decision and this beat them all for me.
Soupdragon Thanks for the comment
Jbeing nosy now, did you go bkack and grey or for the orange ?
Orange only way to go on KTM for me
Glen whyte If you're just cruising, you can easily turn the bike into street mode and the throttle feels just fine. In sports mode it's too snatchy for traffic and normal street usage though...
Great vid! Concur about the rear end look
what would you rather have, either a KTM 790 or MT09?
Neither. Triumph 765R.
Just had a demo on the ktm . Way better than an mt 09 and looks great in the black and silver
Hi Jane, i have a 2015 mt09 and thinking in a more fun bike, how is the throttle responde on the 790 ?
MotoExploring . Throttle response is really pretty smooth and power feels a lot stronger than the mt 09. I would go with the ktm all day long
@@darrenbutler160 i pretend to do lots of slow wheelies, because of that i asked about throttle response. I need to test drive one.
Thank You.
Very honest review, love it! Also you getting any more key rings in at all?
Quick shifters aren’t supposed to work well at low rpms. That’s kind of the point. The transmission needs to be loaded.
Makes perfect sense, you wouldn't expect an auto box on a car to shift great at low speeds...Would you?
There's lots of bikes out there, if you changed the suspension, exhaust and a remap they would instantly become great bikes.
Perfect bike for commute
When it cut out at 15:20 that same thing happened to me. And just before it happend we did the same thing. A little throttle blip and engaged clutch. Strange.
I don’t generally watch motovlogger reviews on bikes but that was pretty good
👍
Glad you enjoyed! 😁
I love my little 390 Duke commuter, seriously considering chopping in my weekend toy (XSR700) for one of these.
Nice one Chopsy - I pretty much agree with everything you said...but personally find the looks a bit "meh" - can't argue with the value though can you!
Great minds and all that :-) Im looking forward to the R model, I could really be tempted with one.. Little project to get it looking decent haha
see if they let you have the 3D printed files and custom built underseat exhaust be bananas for sure! :-)
I think it looks really good in real life when you did the standard mods like
Aftermarket tail and mirrors and remove the footpacks of the second seat...
Mate stick with your MT 09 KTMs are a load of trouble I bought a new 690 it was a pile of shite
@@boomerhgt You're not talking my language. I'm into engineering, details, cause/effect, maintenance, troubleshooting, analysis, design, science, physics, etc.
Excellent work Chopsy!!.....still prefer the 1290.... and trying to do deal on one. Keep up the front wheel👍👍😆
On the Electronic Only thing missing is Cruise control
Chops you are making my life difficult. Just when I thought the Super Duke 1290 could be my next bike you tempt me with this creation. Looks like the Super Duke demo tomorrow might have to include the 790 as well!
Yes do it 😀😀
The 790 has all the power you can use on public roads and in my province falls into the same insurance class as my KLR 650. The Duke was a revelation compared to my KLR, which I was perfectly happy with before I bought the KTM. If the KTM is a scalpel then the KLR is a ladle. Still love the old beast, however; It's far happier in city traffic than the Duke and far more practical for touring.
What did you go for in the end?
Pretty sure the mt09 will wheelie with traction control in setting 1
I'm defo gonna go for this instead of MT-09!
You'll be glad you did
MT09 seems really boring compared to this although I'm a KTM man through and through, that might have something to do with it
Me to and right now KTM has a sale on all authorized dealers in US for 7999$
Code Name Noob KTM much less useful than the MT09 fucking rock hard for any kind of distance
@@boomerhgt put a comfort seat on then you Nancy
I had the display on dark mode on my 390 permanent because dark mode is just better on everything. :) But it was for sure too sensitive.
Epic bike ..... KTM makes fun ready bikes
This duke or the TUono 660? Great videos by the way. 💪🏼🔥🔥🔥
I feel the same about the rear end of the 790. Awesome bike though
Thanks Ryan, the 790 is great but out of those three the RS Street would be my choice. It's a fair bit more money of course but money no object 👍
Nice one Chopster! Good to hear the negatives as well as the positives. This or the MT09-SP? Surely the suspenders on the SP MT would cinch it?
Yeah its tough, I think I would take this as suspension can be sorted, overall bike quality is better than the MT plus has all the toys standard. Its not a deal breaker the electronics but the ability to turn off traction and wheelie control is a must for me. The MT SP is also more expensive remember
The 1k pounds extra isn't worth it compared to the normal mt09 unless u really like that sp color!
With a revalve on ur standard mt09 ur as fine as the sp!
It’s already loud as hell , it sounds great 👍
When they are working....stunning.
What was wrong with your engine?
Nice one. I rode one of these the other day, absolutely loved it although next I did the 1290 straight after. I'm still wondering which one to buy haha.
Buy the bigger bike you will regret it if you dont
A low miler (3k) 2018 model is about £5k now….very tempted to treat myself for Christmas
Checking one out tonight 😁
@@punkrockdidi awww nice!!!!!

What how! In norway a used 2019 one with maybe 10 k km is 10-12000£
After owning 2 Triumphs (Speed & Tiger) I am looking for another bike and brand.
For some reason they’ve taken away the duke/superduke orange frame that made this range stand out so much. Even the 390 still has it.
Another great video loved it;) duke r version hmm

Totally agree Matt. Can you post a review
Of your Z900 mate ?
I'm not really one for making video reviews. But have a look at my instagram for how my z900 looks now. I do plan on doing a walk round video to show the accessories I've fitted though.

The stuff is there if you need, and out of the way when you don't. The added complexity is a concern- so far no problems regarding that on my pretty complex machine.
The day/night mode on the screen should be user-switchable.
I think it doesnt have all the bling with suspension and brakes yet, because KTM are maybe saving that for a potential 790 DUKE R, as they did with the 690 duke.
I want the 790ADV so bad my gentleman parts hurt. Please KTM, get that bike out!
Thanks
Thank you for the video. With which byke you had more fun and which one is more uncomfortable, 790 duke or 690 SMC R ?
None of those bikes are comfortable
TMF just reviewed that bike and he said they should fire the guy who designed those mirrors !
Yeah KTM do struggle to make a decent looking mirror.. Not sure why! But they would be changed for bar ends ones anyway so no biggy
Thank you again for your review, we have similar taste in bikes. I am the owner of a 500 6days 2019 also ;)
I hope in EICMA this year together with the adventure model they present us with an R version with suspension fixed and 10hp more, I will buy one next summer or a used S1000r, Tuono or 1290.

15:22 my duke 390 did that occasionally, seems like a ktm thing
Good catch, mine did that exactly once. Was weird and a little scary though.
Dude! And I thought it was just my bike! Leave it overrunning too long and pop the clutch in. Gone. Looks like a fueling issue. If you notice, on the occasions it doesn't cut out, the revs drop pretty low and then pop back up.
@@theuberindian3988 never had the coming back up thing, but after an ecu upgrade and a bit of miles added on, i never had the problem again. My mechanic said it was just a fueling issue, probably due to the eu rules about emissions
