    Sigh…why is the US like this? I just want to leave and never come back - why do I have to pay taxes when I will never return? Didn’t we literally fight a war to stop double taxation? LMAO so dystopian

      Unfortunately, U.S. taxation is citizenship-based, so you're more than likely required to file if you've been earning income from anywhere in the world.

      You're right, cash gifts are normally not taxable (they can be to the person giving the gift!) As we mentioned, income is considered to be any amount of earnings, including money that is given to you throughout the calendar year from any country in the form of salary, investment income, rental income, and unemployment benefits. Key word is earnings here 😊

I'd suggest reading through this guide to decide which filing status is right for you. You'll need to report pension income on your US tax return along with social security benefits to see if any US tax applies. Nevada has no income tax while California does.

    What happens if I dont file my taxes?

    • @MyExpatTaxes
      @MyExpatTaxes  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are a U.S. citizen or resident, it is generally required by law to file a federal tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) each year, reporting your income and paying any taxes owed. Failing to file your U.S. taxes can have various consequences, such as Failure to File Penalty.

    I am married, my wife is Polish, we were married outside America. I have not sent paper work to states that we are married because we don't live there, we live in Europe and Asia. How would I do the taxes in the states as they (America) do not know that I am married? Can I file as single. Also, if I have a 1099 that is 3500, and I made 13,000 usd over seas, how does the 12,400 work? Last, does your program work for state taxes. I have my mail forward to my friends place, I have never lived there, it's just where mail is being forward.

    hi, I was born in Germany and my father is American. The consulate is currently checking whether I have been a citizen since birth. If this is the case and I subsequently get citizenship from birth, do I have to file my first tax return and an FBAR for 2020 next year? Or do I still have to do it retrospectively for the past few years?

    • @MyExpatTaxes
      @MyExpatTaxes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Phillip, if you found out you have US citizenship by birth, you are an "Accidental American"and need to become fully tax compliant. In order to become fully tax compliant as an Accidental American, you will need to file your current year’s taxes and 3 years of back taxes. We are currently running an offer on our Streamlined Procedure that can help you get back on track. However, in order to complete and file your tax forms, you will require a Social Security Number. If you already have one - great! Here's more info on what to do if you're an Accidental American: www.myexpattaxes.com/expat-tax-tips/accidental-american/accidental-americans-tax-compliant/

      Hi, you can read the response we gave below to Desiree. Essentially, you and your wife don't need to if you didn't go above the filing threshold, however, it's better to be safe than sorry, and just file. To get child tax credit depends on many factors. Hi! It sounds like maybe you were looking into getting IRS compliant using The Streamlined Procedure. We take great pride in our fixed & transparent pricing so let me break it down for you!
      For Americans who havn't filed their taxes while living abroad, they can file using The Streamlined Procedure. We charge 696 Euros including VAT for 4 years of returns (149 Euros aach) + 6 years of FBAR reports. Also included in the price is 100 Euro which covers Professional Tax Review and Consulting. All that to catch up on your tax obligations and ensure peace of mind.… we say that’s pretty reasonable!
      I hope that helps!
