    kind of a grey area, I called schwab, vanguard, and Fidelity and they all told me to kick rocks, but even on their websites they have no specific lists or countries or any guidance at all, they seem to be operating on a don't ask dont tell basis. Not sure how Schwab only works with some people in the EU (maybe only the UK ??? ) I am aware of the 25k min deposit, but sounds like they don't care if you are going to be in other countries. Only option seems to be keeping a us address and hope your assets don't get frozen or seized. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I have found no decent options for the normies who aren't Uber Rich.

    Are US citizens living in Canada and commuting to work in the US eligible for a foreign tax credit on US taxes?

    • @MyExpatTaxes
      @MyExpatTaxes 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you pay Canadian income taxes, there is a possibility to claim foreign tax credits. However, generally, if you are working in the US, that will be considered US-sourced income, so you’ll have to review the treaty to see if resourcing of foreign tax credits is allowed.

    Good to hear the survey results. No real surprises but confirmation on most topics. I think too many Americans put an outsized emphasis on the president. The president is so limited and often has minimal impact on what laws and policy gets changed for better or worse than congress. Congress puts court justices through, makes and passes laws and controls spending or not as well as taxes. SO much can be blocked or pushed through regardless of the president or can be undone by the next president. I wish there was less focus on one person in for 4-8 years and more on those in for 20-30 or 40+ years.

As US citizen self employed, if I become tax resident in a TA country and pay SS to that country, will it count as a contribution towards US social security, or only to the SS system of country where expat? Is there a way to choose to have it count towards US SS contributions e.g., if certain that will never pay for long enough to foreign country to ever qualify for retirement benefits there?

      Great question! It sounds like you're referring to the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE). Here's how it works: As a US citizen living and working abroad, you may be able to exclude up to a certain amount of your foreign earned income from your US taxable income. For the 2024 tax year, this exclusion amount is $120,000. This means that if you earn $120,000 or less from your salary abroad, you can exclude that amount from being taxed by the US. Each year, this amount increases slightly!

    Thank you for these videos. You are the first person I've seen who explains taxes from a top-down perspective in simple terms that a non-accountant like myself can understand. Einstein once said "if you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." So I appreciate your mastery on this subject of taxes and explaining it simply for us lay folk. 🙏

    You probably get this alot, but what if im digital nomadding and drawing a check from a US employer, but i remain physically in another country?

      It is still considered foreign earned income as you are physically outside of the US doing the work.

      Hi there! You can get caught up on your taxes via the Streamline Procedure: www.myexpattaxes.com/streamlining/ It includes: 3 years of tax returns and 6 FBARs without failure-to-file or FBAR penalties. If you qualify, you will not be subject to penalties such as failure-to-pay, failure-to-file, or FBAR penalties-awesome! The program also allows you to file amended returns to claim missed returns on qualified foreign pension plans.

      @@phamanhkhoa2090 Yes, a TH-camr living overseas can receive a US tax refund, but it depends on several factors. As a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder, you must file taxes regardless of where you live. You may be eligible for a refund if you qualify for certain tax credits or deductions, such as the Foreign Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, or deductions for business expenses. However, your eligibility for a refund will depend on your income, how much tax was withheld or paid, and your overall tax situation. Make sure to file with MyExpatTaxes next year to ensure the maximum tax refund possible for your situation!
