Thinking about and being able to terminate cover crops. I think you're of the few sources that take this issue seriously. And dad jokes, and having a cat in your videos. Maybe I still want to see you standing in a field. Maybe the only thing better would be if you were holding an implement, like a hoe or pitchfork? Maybe, just maybe...overalls? ;)

Maybe the best practical advice was try to understand the weed pressure where you are growing, and how that relates to the chances of success for establishing and getting to harvest the crops you need. A little weeding is fine, but if you feel like the only way that crop will be successful is constant interaction with the weed pressure then maybe try growing a crop that can handle it better and possibly even help diminish that weed pressure like potatoes.

The best farming advice I ever received was actually a warning that I turned into a challenge: The founder of the Scott County KY non-profit group home Quest Farm Inc., Joe Richey, told me, the new farm manager in 2010, that I would never be able to grow potatoes on that farm. He said they had put out tons of spuds and never broke even.
I took household compost, leftover potting soil from bedding plants and mums, as well as composted horse manure in straw from a neighborhood horse stable and made raised beds for spuds. Isolated from the native soil, in an unused greenhouse.
I invited that old farmer to enjoy potatoes galore with us later in the season when we had an abundant harvest. He said I cheated 😂
Joe Richey just recently passed away, we'll celebrate his life on 10/12 in Lexington KY.

The best farming advice I’ve had since I’m not a farmer, nor have I ever grown food before, is how easy it is to grow microgreens, which means I’ve had years of fresh greens in my kitchen for not much money and am less scared to get into proper gardening when I move soon.

I love that you promote soccer (ahem, football) on a podcast about no-till growing. Two of my favorite topics coming together. I think you're spot on about the similarities between managing a farm and a soccer team. And I agree that it's the best sport to watch, even boring 0 - 0 matches (being bored is actually good for us).
Pro tip: Don't follow a successful club. That's no fun. Pick a local club that's struggling. The pain and frustration _will_ be hard on you, but the joy when they finally do make it is going to be so much greater. That's what it's all about. No pain, no gain. You could always pick a rich club that's always winning as your 2nd favorite (probably good for your mental health). I'd recommend a club that plays in the Champions League for that, it gives you a chance to watch the beautiful game at its finest.
Amunt Valencia! Go Racing Louisville! Go no-till growers!

Yesterday you discussed the troubles with growing during the winter, ironically, many of the reasons you gave for not growing int eh winter, are the same ones we stop in the heat of the summer. We push as much as possible through the winter, and stop in mid June until late August. The flea beetles, the heat, the humidty, all combine to be an formidable force of oppression. Something about walking out the door at 0500 in the morning and sweating before you reach the bottom step of the porch that is just terrible.
We have less competition at market in the winter, we have less bugs, and less agressive weed growth. At 47 years young, my body doesn't like heat or cold, but heat just makes me so incredibly slow.

The best piece of advice has been mindfulness, research and experience. I started by reading and watching, especially your content lolbs. Then I stared applying what I believed fit my situation as an urban gardener in Ohio. Finally to be mindful of why i do what I do and how it will affect the ecosystem I want to build.

You touched on a point while reviewing comments that highlights why I enjoy your channel and follow it pretty closely. You readily admit to failures. You are one of the few wise people who have realized that failures don't make one a failure. Rather, they are opportunities to improve. A true failure is one that doesn't seek to improve. Many, and I mean MANY, of other youtube channels in the homesteading/farming genre depict themselves as never making mistakes. And any honest person knows that such people do not exist. I tend to avoid such channels. What I look for in this genre of channels is knowledge and wisdom in growing. And I'm sure you would agree that such wisdom often comes through failures. Keep up the great work you do. It is appreciated! I have learned a great deal from you.

After years of watching You Tubes , what seems to be the best you can do for your plants
is to use mulch and aged compost . They hold moisture, regulate temperature, inhibit weeds,
allow easy weed pulling , feeds great nutrition, improves the soil on several levels,
attracts worms and other bugs , etc. Mulch and compost also dresses up your plants.
So start a compost pile in your yard , Today !

hey Jesse, you always put out very informative content, in an entertaining manner, and from the time it takes to plan, record, and edit the material I can definitely see the need to monetize and be compensated for your efforts. That being said the number and length of commercial spots is driving me away from the channel, not just yours but others as well. I can take the 30 second spots here and there, but 60 seconds multiple times is just a drag. I like your stuff and can relate to the bad Dad joke bits, was a youth baseball coach for years when my kids were young, a retired carpenter and quit banging nails for something easier, farming ( right) our 2.5 acres here in Virginia. The need to get away from it after the busy spring and summer and head into my wood shop to work on projects there through the winter. It's a needed break that gets me excited for the coming spring and truth be told i actually slip into the greenhouse and begin starting plants in December. Anyway, thanks for all you do and your efforts, all the best Rob Woehrle

good show Jesse, have you ever tried LAB finished compost? i.e. 2 or 3 turns to kill weed seeds during the thermophillic, then water liberally with activated LAB as you do the last turn (i.e. with 50/50 molasis) and let it sit covered, it seems to sit at ~130 for weeks, I'd say my start pile size reduces to ~1/2 with LAB, whereas without (and more turning) it finsihes ~1/3 original size. Probably something to do with REDOX reactions, or rather more reducing (keeping more nutrients) as opposed to oxydation (losing nutrients to off gassing/oxydation) I have noticed worms seem to be much more active with LAB finsihed compost (many more worms) though thinking about it, it could also be rockdust and charcoal I started adding the same time I started LAB finishing ~2yrs ago. Loving the podcast, more soil nerdery please, I can put up with pontificating about 22 grown men (or kids) kicking a bag of wind about as long as there's some soil nerdery ;)
