  • I looked at the cost of the Neptune Trident and the Focustronic Alkatronic to compare the long term of owning and running each of the unit for 5 years and then 10 years. Watch the video to the end to see the total ownership cost I came up with. Based on what I found her, I went with the Alkatroinc but only time will tell if I will convert over to the Trident since it offers the ability to test Calcium and Magnesium.

    This is awesome - well done... I'd get the soon (never) to be released Seneye or the kH Director in the future - My guess is the Seneye would be about 250 for the unit (let's say 500) and 15/mth for the tabs so $1800 over 10 years... thinking about it this way makes more sense. The good thing about the GHL is I dose 1- part and it has a free doser. It's great to see all of these options

      I should have included the Seneye and KH in this comparison...... maybe in a future video. Thanks for sharing!

      @@ModernReefer Well the Seneye Coral has been delayed for ages. They told me it should be around the price of the Seneye Reef (it was going to not do the Ammonia but apparently the beta testers wanted it and that is why they said it has been delayed). We would likely need the Webserver with it and that takes it up to $500 I would guess and I thought with the PAR meter, the pH, the temp and the water level that it probably made the most sense but then BRS Ryan said the pH meter is not as accurate... so we will see - I will probably get the GHL

      @@sunnygoold9449 Interesting. Still something to consider. I'll have to look into it.

    Great comparison with them both , loved the details of ownership, however I would place my house on it that neither would last the 10 yr mark with all them moving components, no doubt motor's will need to be replaced, seals lubricated etc so I don't think it will just be that price on either if I'm honest. If each one lasts 5 yrs each I'd be surprised 👍

      I totally agree. Things will break due to wear and tear. I wish there were fewer moving parts with these auto testers.

      I'll have to do an update video on which route I went with since it'll amen sense why I went the route I did.

    Hard to compare because it is not an apple to apple comparison with the CA and Mg tests. Maybe include the cost of a red sea kit for those two and what that would be.

    • @ModernReefer
      @ModernReefer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the Alkatronic would be missing the Ca and Mag. I personally use Salifert for Ca and Mag so I guess that could be included in the calculations. Anyhow I based calucation breakdown on the total number of test per each device.

    Left out the postage of mailing the trident back for repair after 4 months. Up side is just wait and mail dos and atk back at once so that save some postage.

      That bad? My ATK seems to be doing fine so far.

    I went with the trident. The reagent is expensive. With the GHL and maybe also with the Kh Guardian and this Alkatronic you can use a generic 0.1N acid which makes the reagent super cheap.

    • @ModernReefer
      @ModernReefer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't go wrong with either. Honestly if the 6 month Trident reagent was more readily available, I would probably consider going that route just so that I don't have to manually test Ca and Mag.

      @@ModernReefer In my next tank I may use both just so I can use the cheat reagent to check alk 24/7 and run the trident manually one a day just for calcium. idk yet. I have the khd in the shelf here, but it's a pain to use the ghl profilux and it's not as precise as the trident or the alkatronic. that said I'm not sure how it compares in real world as I've not set it up yet.

    I wish someone would do trident vs mastertronic, I wouldn’t say the trident is quite its in my bedroom and I hear clicking all day long, I think the alkatronic is overpriced for what it does and not a big fan of the company who makes it, Neptune has always been very helpful when I have issues, no so much with the other company., Of course the yearly cost would be cheaper it only tests one parameter not three, so times the reagent for the alkatronic by three then let me know if it’s cheaper

    You might save money over 10 years but I think you’ll spend more time on the alktronic... my time is worth more than that

      I have the trident now running 1 Mag/Ca test per day and 2 elk test per day. It's been running fine. th-cam.com/video/VBzoT9swZtU/w-d-xo.html
