Training tonal memory. The atonal section moves the ear away from the tonal center. When they move back to the resolution chord, it's a check to see how quickly the horn line makes the adjustment back to the tonal center and correct intonation in relationship to the harmony.

What's the rationale behind incorporating the "jumbled" atonal section ?? Never could understand the objective behind it.

Also balance from person to person. Back when I used it in high school, it was the goal to balance to the two people next to you.
