Adagio is an italian word, that means "Slowly".
This is also used in music to define the pace of a music (a bit slow, between lento and andante) and also as a name of a piece of a sonata, concerto or symphony that is using that specific pace.
The music from this song of Lara Fabian is a pop translation of an italian classic piece called "Albinoni's Adagio". It was written in 1958 by Remo Giazotto who was an admirer of Albinoni, a musician from the 17th/18th century. He claimed it was from him and gave his music this name but there is consensus today that he most probably has composed it himself.
The classic music piece is globally famous and there were many different translations into different songs, with different music compositions, mostly operatic, and different lyrics (the band Renaissance, Daniele Licari, Sarah Brightman and Sissel Kyrkjebo for instance).
But the most famous version, by far, is Lara’s version:
it was translated into a pop song for her, she wrote lyrics in italian then co-wrote the english lyrics for it and is the original performer of these 2 versions.
She kept the title Adagio and wrote a story with a double meaning: a woman that is awaiting to find her love / an artist that is awaiting the god of inspiration.
This song has become a classic and has been covered by many : Shirley Bassey (!!), Dimash (Lara is his absolute idol and he covered several of her songs), Floor Jansen, Polina Gagarina, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Julie Anne San Jose, Charice Penpengco, Giulia Falcone, Laura Bretan, Il Divo, Rimar, Vitas, Anastasia Luna, Evgenia Fanfara, , …
They made great covers but none of these match the amazing storytelling performance of Lara, or her ability to use vocal subtleties to be in sync with the music, exposed in her live from the concert From Lara with Love.
    th-cam.com/video/bqoS-KOLV_4/w-d-xo.html
Her italian version is also amazing. A famous italian version:

Or you can check her recent excellent renditions:
    - in Zagreb, late april 2024 : th-cam.com/video/06WOD2AxTTM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=pXrU2vQ1Lrca2PTs

Thank you as always, Eric, for bringing your cumulative knowledge on Lara and each of her songs! ❤
I know it's been a while since I did a Lara reaction and of course, I have missed seeing your comments. Now, you might notice that I intentionally try not to prepare in advance as I want to see if I understand the piece of music before I find out if my interpretation is remotely correct - if I got it or not.
This is precisely where you come in and it is a true pleasure to see my own thoughts from a different perspective i.e. now that I know the actual story. You are an indispensable source of information on everything Lara! Thank you! ❤❤❤
A bit later down the road, as proposed by you and by @raquelra5878, I will be watching both the Italian version and the one from Royal Albert Hall.
Oh, and Dimash's Adagio is due to be published this Sunday. 😉

@@AleksReactsThank you so much for acknowledging my suggestion. I’d like to give you another one. I know that “Je t’aime” is on your list, so, when you, hopefully, gets there, consider doing a double reaction, since I’m sure other fans might have suggested the 2001 Paris live performance. Although it is an extraordinary performance, I think it too emotional, not suitable for a proper vocal analysis. So, I suggest you to react first to the “En Toute Intimité version:

I have watched countless reactions to Adagio, and you are the 1st one to pick up on what the song is saying about musical inspiration. I think this song is such a showcase of her brilliance as a songwriter and composer. If you go back to your reaction for Broken Vow she talks about how she can't explain how a song is written, that it's something that goes through you. The cleverness of her lyrics here is that on the surface it sounds like a love song to a person, and the masses can enjoy and relate to it that way. But if you know just how much being a songwriter means to her (she calls herself "a songwriter with a voice") then you hear a whole different depth to it. It's a love song to the god of inspiration, as Adagio, begging "him" to never abandon her. It speaks to the ethereal nature of inspiration and how she'll always be waiting at "the piano that plays", because the desire to compose is always alive under her skin. It's just extraordinary writing on every level and does such justice to the original piece. This is why no cover can compare, imo. It's so deeply personal to her, like it came out of her very DNA, who else could truly replicate that?
    Lovely reaction!

    • @AleksReacts
      @AleksReacts  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and detailed comment! When I'm not clear on the meaning or there might be multiple interpretations, the discussion around can often be eye-opening or at worst, offer different perspectives. I enjoy a well thought out perspective as much as listening to the song for the first time.
I do remember the beginning of Broken Vow and her words on the creation of a song. Adagio being the god of inspiration is actually a great take on the lyrics, one I did not pick up on, but it makes so much sense. The piano that plays is what tipped me off on this potentially being about music, rather than a man. I understand from other comments that the Italian version is clearer on the meaning, but even this one does touch on music, inspiration, a more ethereal love than a simple love for a man...
A cover can be beautiful, but in most cases it does fail, especially if the song is deeply personal. This is true both of Adagio and of Broken Vow. On the other hand Lara's cover of Je suis malade is to me better than the original.

🇨🇦 Comments by Eric Sicard will give you everything you would need to know about Lara, her music, her history, and her performances !
Paying close attention to her singing, you will begin to see that Lara sings each syllable or each word, and every word in every lyric, clearly and completely to the end, no matter what song she is singing, or in which language she sings it in !
I recommend continuing with one of the following !
"Quedate" in Spanish, "Requiem pour un fou" a duet with Johnny Hallyday or "I am A-WA" to observe her approach to recordings ! 🇨🇦

I think I started watching Eurovision sometime towards the end of the 80's and then quite a few skipped years in the 90's, then picked up again in 2000's. Very messy on that really. The ones I do know "before my time" are of course Abba's Waterloo and Johnny Logan's Hold me now, but that's not due to Eurovision, just those songs becoming popular worldwide after Eurovision. To be honest, I don't know even most of my own country's entries... I mean, I know some, but many were not that good to begin with and some we should be ashamed of, like e.g. Riva's Rock me baby, which I believe won or Baby Doll's Brazil (she's a great singer btw with the worst choice of songs, but her jazz performances are WOW). 😂

The earliest date I found was 1685? Lara wrote the Lyric’s to Adajio & originally said, no that I will not do it, but they persisted & this is the product. Lara felt unworthy to touch the historical Italian Classic Instrumental. She wrote Italian Lyric’s at the same time. 🩷

I haven't gone that far. It was enough for me to know that Albinoni lived in the 17th & 18th century, provided the original theme was his in the first place i.e that Remo Giazotto did not compose it himself, which would then make it a 20th century piece. Either way, what Lara introduced to it made it just perfect.

He was a fan of Albinoni who was in the shadows and clained he composed it based on fragments of Albinoni’s music sheets he has found but failed to expose these and now, following many research, everybody has concluded Remo Giazzotto is the sole composer and the music is from the 50s.

The fabulous concert "Pure" in1997 set the stage for what was to come from this young woman. In 2000 she is still wowing listeners with her performance in the "From Lara with Love" concert. As much well deserved praise as 2000 receives, the concerts she does both in Moscow (2010) and Sochi, Russia (2016) are similar gems where every song is a masterpiece. The Moscow concert in my opinion shows a more mature Lara, and now with the added years she has additional poise and confidence (if that's even possible 😄). Sochi shows the continued evolution of Lara and with the growing influence Igor Krutoy in her music, her talent seems even stronger. In these concerts her singing just seems so effortless and her presence so elegant! Her chemistry on stage with Igor is magical and you can easily see the appreciation they have for each others talent. Between concerts, TV specials and the many interviews, one starts to appreciate the humble nature that she has and in my opinion, one of the reasons for her success is that she never takes herself too serious and doesn't try to hide her emotions. As alway thank you for your video, your reaction to her music is wonderful!

I don’t like these concerts in Moscow, probably because most of them are not sung live. It is common to use playback at TV concerts there. I would suggest the Mademoiselle Zhivago mini movie but not the concert. In addition, she was vocally not in top form in these years, especially when you compare it to the concert she has given in the last few weeks, her voice is now better than ever.
