    I don't know anything about shooting bows but I am lifter and do a number of strength sports. The inward cant, pulling downward is going to typically be the strongest and safest way to pull accross the body like this. It gets the most benefits of your natural leverage and gets the most lat activation, taking a lot of strain off your joints and your smaller back muscles.
    So dont know crap about bows but I know a fair bit about how the body works and I don't immediately see the argument on how this method is supposed to be the dangerous one.
    Only thing I can think of is your back is much stronger than your shoulder, so if you go to heavy or dont get the right leverage with your front shoulder, thats the part that will give in first. But its no more dangerous than trying to pull a bow thats to heavy incorrectly in any other method. Joe pulled that way on the 200 pounder for a reason.

      I spent nearly a decade in power lifting, boxing and martial arts and while I am possibly the worlds -worst- shot with a bow (i hunt with a crossbow I am so bad at conventional archery lol) I have played often with my friends 100 pound war bow. You are utterly correct sir, bio mechanically I have tried both styles and the "wrong" way not only feels easier, it also is safer from a lifting/strain point of view, it works with your power angles and muscle groups and I can't see how they believe this is unsafe to do.
      Also Shad, I have spent just as long shooting competition rifle and three gun and you are 100 percent correct with the shooting thing. If what you do works for you, is fast and you hit targets then it isn't stupid, it works. In fact most of the more modern shooting styles have evolved out of someone doing "the wrong thing" but it proving to be faster so everyone else adopts it. In my time shooting I have learned, relearned and relearned AGAIN how to "properly shoot a pistol" and there will ALWAYS be some jackass saying "thats wrong" but the seconds off the shot clock speak the loudest.

      @@mortenjacobsen5673 Well I have had shads way explained as one of the original ways. The main reason you do not pull from above today is for safety of others.
      If your shooting at an enemy and accidentally let go to early and go to far and hit someone its most likely still an enemy ;)
      But in modern days you often have a safety barrier behind the targets and aiming high risks the arrow going over and you might end up hurting someone, which today is illegal.
      But claiming that it can cause injury to your self might just be a very easy way to get people to respect the rules ;)

      Worst part is most never get exposed to all this because most public archery ranges only allow you to you the down and up draw and fire from inside of the bow, because anything else is "dangerous". They claim not only does it increase risk of injury, any other draw causes you have arrow pointed in "unsafe" directions as you are drawing the arrow in the bow.

      Exactly. I'll use a modern comparison- a LOT of gunstore cowboys and former operators who should bloody well know better push the C-clamp grip for assault rifles all over TH-cam and in their training courses. Now, there is most definitely a place for that grip- it stabilizes longer rifles for more accurate shots at distance, and is a damned good way to stabilize a full-length M-16 or similar while on the move or without anything to rest or brace on- but it is neither the only grip one should use nor is it necessarily the best one. C-clamp is utter shyte for CQB, and a lot of us who damned near got our heads blown off doing sweeps with longer (and thus bulkier and more awkward) weapons quickly learned to use shorter PSD model 7" or 9" M-4 variants (glories of SF and contractors- we get to buy our own gear instead of using the junk issued to us :D ) and use variants of high-CAR for close quarters. You use the grip that works for the situation, not what some doctrine tries to tell you, because its literally your life depending on it. Same with pistols- modified Weaver is good for some circumstances, CAR and high CAR for extremely close-quarters or room clearing, and so on. Never seen anyone use isosceles in a firefight, but some people still teach it, so I guess somewhere somehow there is a use for that, too. Warriors always have, do, and always will use whatever works best for the situation, not what doctrine or "conventional wisdom" tell them to. "Veterans Will Vary", as our CQC instructor put it, meaning you will adopt the tools and techniques that work best for you for any given situation. Period. That has been the truth of warfare since Olag first cracked Urg across the skull with a mammoth bone tens of thousands of years ago.

    Just guessing, but I think that medieval people shoot their bow in a way the found most comfortable/accurate/useful. By that I mean that in the same way people prefer writing with one hand or the other or we have preferred legs, etc. Each one also has a predisposition to a different shooting style. Medieval people had a lot of time to practice so they could find the style that better suit them. Moreover, they probably did not learn from a book, but from a person, therefore I imagine the styles would a lot less structured.

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's one fly in the ointment: You can only experiment with different styles of well anything to figure out what works best for you personally if you're exposed to different styles of doing it. Which - depending on the context in which they're taught - isn't necessarily the case.
      Also: "People had a lot of time to practice" is a massive generalization. For starters: Not all people had that time; peasants had enough on their hands just working the land for their local nobles. And even those with plenty of spare-time wouldn't necessarily be using that to practice shooting. There are a lot of other activities people might find more enjoyable. Even in England, where people were mandated to practice shooting by law, there would have been people that hated archery and would have practiced as little as they could get away with. And with that attitude usually don't progress to a degree of skill that enables them to come up with an individual style that works best for them.

    • @SepticFuddy
      @SepticFuddy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@MrAranton That's not even remotely true. Anyone who spends a significant amount of time practicing a discipline has experimented with things they were not taught. I developed elements of my own technique while competing in rifle marksmanship, directly contrary to certain things that were taught to me. Musicians play with different modes, intervals, and rhythms before they've learned about them in theory, to the point where the uninstructed have even created such groundbreaking genres as blues and flamenco. It is an entirely natural human tendency to learn by experimentation; learning by instruction is actually quite unnatural and thus why it can sometimes be so difficult to nail it down exactly. Someone has to experiment to develop the instruction in the first place, after all.
      You also overestimate the time a farmer spends working the land. Crops have their seedtime and harvest, and the rest is waiting for the next season. "Some people wouldn't have enjoyed archery" is a pretty useless argument against the idea that people would have experimented with techniques. Some people would have loved it, especially in a world where you can't scroll through memes and swipe on Tinder all day. Those people would have spent good time with it and thus experimented. Those who got proficient would undoubtedly help coach the others around them. See how simple that is?

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SepticFuddy What you say is true for enthusiasts. Which doesn't even relate to my point that not everyone in medieval was an enthusiast.
      You also operate on the assumption that people in medieval times operated pretty much on the same mind-set we do. Which they didn't. People in the medieval believed some pretty stupid and easy to debunk nonsense about the world because they didn't dare question the authorities that told them that's how things were. Scolastic disputes were not won based on arguments, but based who was able bring in the most renowned authority to bear.
      Human beings learn primarily through imitation - not experimentation. The idea to use experimentation as an educational tool wasn't around in medieval times yet. It is based on the notion that the instructed should think for themselves and question those who teach them, that teachers should not believed because of their authority but convince through evidence and reason. Which is antithetical to how medieval society was structured. In medieval times original thought was strongly discouraged - if things went poorly, people who thought for themselves ended up getting burnt alive. Now: Starting to experiment means to challenge the authority that instructed you. And keep in mind: archery is a military pursuit. Maybe you heard the line: "There's correct way to do things, there's the wrong way and there's the army way to do things". If that attitude persists in a society that generally encourages people to challenge authorities and to experiment, how strong do you think it was in a society in which thinking for yourself was strongly discouraged?
      And finally: You underestimate the work medieval peasants had to do. It's just seed and harvest, they had to tend animals on a daily basis, they had to tend to their fields (getting rid of weeds and pests, making sure water could drain if the field got to wet or making sure what little during a drought can be absorbed into the soil instead of running off. They had to maintain/make the tools they needed for their work, and so on and so forth. I'm barely scratching the surface. With very, very few exceptions, whatever peasants needed or wanted, they made themselves from scratch. That's way more work than the avarage nine-to-five people work these days.

      @@weirdofromhalo yeah, not really. You need wide arrays of different skills while playing 2 vs 2 in Beach Volleyball. There's no different libero, setter, blocker, middle blocker, and spiker in Beach Volleyball. The 2 players in each sides are their own libero, each other's setter and spiker, and the blockers of their own. The execution is different either, there is a lot of different rules, there is a lot of different factors in the field, etc. But indeed indoor volleyball players and beach volleyball players have the same fundamentall skills, but the game is executed differently.

      @@mortenjacobsen5673 The argument about artists not knowing much about archery is a flawed one imho. We do not know anything about their knowledge (so it can go both ways) what we can safely assume is that at least some of these are not just painting from their imagination but painting depictions based on information provided by actual people who were present at battles, sieges etc. (that is something that some artists do to this day when depicting any field/discipline, not just archery, it is called research :D). For example, with Agincourt we have plenty of eye witnesses on both sides.
      I think it would be disingenuous to assume that all the artists knew nothing about archery, did not consult any witnesses or actual soldiers. And in order to disqualify all the art shown you have to go into this absurd scenario that all those paintings are rubbish, made up by people with no knowledge or information. That seems highly improbable. Again there are dozens if not hundreds of paintings with these depictions.

In England in 1067 William 1st decreed that ALL male Normans below knight must become proficient in sword and bow. later Richard 1st decreed all men should be comfortable with a bow, Henry 6th passed a law requiring ALL men must practice once a month with the bow. Henry 8th decreed soldiers in service must practice war bow weekly, skeletons from mary rose showed most soldiers had over developed arms and upper body, he also made law ALL males from 10 yrs up MUST BY LAW practice archery for 2 hours every Sunday between church service, the only men excused were vicars . this law stood until early 18th century. and means from 1067 to 1700s artists would be well versed in archery.

      Trash, Morten, please try to keep it civil.
      As for firing from the right side of the bow with a Mediterranean grip, I've been doing that for nearly fourty years hunting with a composite bow (Turkish composite, but not a horsebow, bit bigger, very similar to what the Romans were using in the late Empire) and I am living proof that not only is it possible- which many of Shad's critics claimed it wasn't- but I am actually more accurate and faster with it that way. It's one thing to shoot targets, another entirely to shoot a living, moving target and have to do rapid succession shots if your first one or two only wound rather than drop the prey. No one wants to search for a wounded deer's bleedout point in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska, trust me. So, it CAN and HAS been done by many archers. The only question that should be argued is whether it is historically accurate. Personally, I've seen enough evidence that both methods were used, it just depended on the archer and the instructor.

I suspect medieval artists were similar - one would expect them to be fairly accurate in what they are familiar with, and less so with the unknown or more fantastical (like depictions of giant serpents or dragons, etc.)

      i think if you read the writings of Wilfred toad wrestler in his papers on the great french hamster wars, it is clearly laid out how to fight a bow......" take you a firm hold of the bow the arc of which isheld to thy chest, the stringy thing away and opposite, place the pointy mini spear with the slot on the stringy stuff and the pointy sharp bit against the wooden bit. push the stringy bit away while pulling the woody bit toward you. let go of the string. ......this is proof positive scholars knew about archery and as records from Wilfreds trial show , it was at this time the phrase friendly fire was coined

    I have been in some archery classes here in Spain, and every monitor shoot on the outside of the bow. And in every demostration I have even been in, the shoot from the outside.
    So I´m not sure that shooting on the inside is in any way "conventional".

    • @bynkmnoz6891
      @bynkmnoz6891 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably "conventional" way is just an old habit when people start doing archery they tend to place an arrow while bow is lowered, imo

    • @garethvila5108
      @garethvila5108 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've also been doing some archery in a club in Spain and, to my knowledge, everyone on that club shoots with the arrow on the inside.
      I suppose it's just something that depends on how you've been trained, and probably most archery practitioners shoot from the inside, turning it into "conventional".
      Now, I'm not sure about it, but I think it may be easier to learn to shoot in this "conventional" way. If you put the arrow on the inside, the natural tendency to hold your hand slightly tilted inwards helps to hold the arrow in place. Also, in that way you can fully see the arrow, and this might also help your aim. If this is the case (and I insist that I'm not sure about it) it might have helped to turn this into the "conventional" way of shooting.
      And, just to be clear, I'm not saying that shooting from the outside is wrong in any way, it's obviously viable and it might even have some benefits (like a faster reloading speed), I'm just saying that shooting from the inside seems to be easier or, at least, easier to learn.

Fancy thin modern arrows are fancy and thin. The fact that the bows are firing these thick wooden dowels is so obvious but my brain just never connected it up!

    I was a teenager at a renaissance fair on a school field trip once. I also drew the bow like you do Shad. I was shooting like that and a staff member after 2-3 arrows in told me that I was shooting the "wrong" way. Keeping in mind a couple 1-2 of those 2-3 shots did actually hit the target. Not stick but hit. I was at least shooting strait enough to hit my target or land near it. My 3rd to 4th shot after she told me I was doing it wrong I "corrected" my stance and immediately sent the arrow in the lane on my left and maybe the one past that. If it's anything I learned from that it's there is no "correct" method to shoot a bow. There is no one way to shoot a bow. The correct way is the way the bowman can safely for themselves and other people around them pull and loose an arrow. If it's safe don't correct it. When I shot I felt it was also instinctive. It strongly felt when shooting I was just rusty not so much what am I doing. Shooting a bow is instinctive yes... however I felt more like I had done it before. It was just something I was doing. I think that's what archers need to understand is don't fight what you instinctively do because that IS the correct way over anything else.

    we live in a very desensitized society, i get the feeling that during the medieval period there was never an absolute way. it was more of "what way works bets for you and comes natually", bc the last thing you want to be doing in a life or death situation is trying to figure out the "right way". this is shown in modern testing in schools that sometime kids get nervous n forget the answer(s). this also seen in normal behavior when someone ask you a question on the spot and normally you would know the answer but you just cant think of it. example: Some ask you "who is that actor?" you know the name of that actor, it's on the tip of your tongue but you just cant get it out. that is the last thing you want have happen in the middle of battle

    I hope you see this Shad - When speed shooting you had another automatic trait that you may not have seen
    Look at the arm in which you hold the bow - you don't maintain the position of the bow but draw it towards the body as you pull a new arrow and locate
    This means that your draw is still adding a push, just not as substantial, to your bow handling arm as you draw the stringer -The same action as the high draw, simply less exaggerated

    "The Englishman did not keep his left hand steady, and draw his bow with his right; but keeping his right at rest upon the nerve, he pressed the whole weight of his body into the horns of his bow. Hence probably arose the phrase "bending the bow," and the French of "drawing" one."
