hi, it's your pal warm_ham here comin' atcha with a hot take -- the vorpal hate in these comments is completely misguided and unwarranted. the dude has over 3000 hours in the game, better times in multiple categories than fimbz and i, including any%, and has probably the deepest knowledge of the game out of anyone in the world, save matte27. if you don't want to take the time to unpack the accurate and insightful points he made because you didn't like his voice or rate of speech, that is 100% your loss. there is a lot to explain about this game in 20 minutes. he did very well.

yea I don't get how fringe members of the community get pissy about people being informative, it's like unless you're actually playing the game they don't want you talking, and some games like super meat boy just can't have self comentary cause they've gotten so optimised you can lose valueable seconds by splitting your attention, and when PB's can increment as lower as fractions of a second that's no good. I know it's a marathon for charity, but again that's why the couch is there. it's like expecting a boxer to do the announcing for his own boxing match

I was working during this run, and I just watched it now. I had a few different people say the commentary was unbearable - it's clear these people don't care enough to learn about the game. Vorpal managed to mash out some awesome insight into the route. I've got a got a good 1500 hours of running IL's and I still learned a thing or two.
Also, nice race! Rip estimate, but changing playstyles is meh. gg, you two :3

I don't think it's the fact that it's not informative, it's just TOO MUCH. A lot of people watching have zero experience playing the game, so listening to it for 20 minutes straight isn't particularly useful, especially if we don't have any baseline to compare it to. I've never played the game, and I found it too distracting.
Meanwhile, it's all happening in real time, so it's the equivalent of someone over-explaining a complicated process, made doubly so by the fact that there are two people playing simultaneously. At any given time, he's only referring to one screen, which isn't necessarily the one anyone is watching at a given moment. So ultimately I 1) don't understand what he's talking about, 2) will likely miss what he's talking about, and 3) be distracted from the gameplay itself. It's the equivalent of trying to take notes in a lecture hall on an unfamiliar subject with no time to right anything down.
Just because he has the experience and he knows his stuff doesn't make it right. You don't force feed someone and then tell them to be grateful.

i think some of your points are valid, grammaton485 -- you have a very different set of experiences with the game than vorpal does, and so some of the information that he was sharing might've been lost in translation as a result. that's true of watching any speedrun with commentary -- i enjoy watching commentated RPG speedruns at these events even though i have no idea what's going on. i still appreciate the commentator's effort to impart knowledge and bring me along on their journey with them. that's cool to me. seeing the hard work of other people is the motivating crux of speedrunning, in my view.
vorpal does go over the "need-to-know" fundamentals of the category at the beginning of the race and describes some of the basic glitches that we use in great detail -- for instance, by the end of hospital, he explains how to execute an autojump, describes why it happens, and points out examples of when we use it in the run.
lastly, i don't think it's necessarily fair to place blame on vorpal for misunderstood commentary when viewers have a feature on this video that allows them to rewind and relisten to something that they might have missed or not fully grasped. you do have the choice to take "lecture notes" from prof. vorpal if you want to -- or you can just sit back and choose to tune him out. or you can watch other meat boy speedruns. lots of content to choose from, lots of choices to make. no one's really force feeding anyone here

    • @Grammaton485
      @Grammaton485 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don't think it's fair to simply say 'tune him out' as his dialogue is literally the single most audible thing almost the entire run. For me, I'd have to mute the video. I use the term 'force feed' because the only counter argument to his commentary seems to be 'shut up and enjoy it, he has experience'. Well no, I don't enjoy it, for the reasons why I described (and you agreed with). We can't ask him to slow down, we can't ask him to just stop. I can understand the depth of his knowledge and experience. That doesn't mean I like to hear it for 20 minutes straight, and his experience and knowledge by themselves do not automatically make him worth of praise.
I don't assign him blame, and I hardly think it makes the video unwatchable; it's just very distracting. My criticisms are valid, and other people bring it up too, and you yourself agree that I do have a point. There's a balance between 'too little' and 'too much' and vorpal easily tipped the balance towards 'too much'.

I feel bad for the hate that the guy explaining all the tricks is getting. Sure, he isn't the most charismatic fellow ever but I really like when speedrunners actually give insight into how they are doing the strategies they are doing. It was clear he knew his stuff and I appreciated the commentary. Particularly because he was courteous to the runners and let them talk whenever they wanted.

  • @brandoncharriere725

I actually really liked the commentary; he clearly knew what he was talking about but it also didn't feel like he was trying to read a script or, what I find more irritating, try to be "too" funny like you get sometimes at GDQ (not calling out anyone in particular, just in general). There are many runs where commentators just make jokes and don't actually inform you on anything, or do a poor job at mixing both (which is the rarer of the two), but everything stated was informative. The only thing I thought was even minutely "irritating" was there was what sounded like loud background chatter (like what you hear at 17:50) but it by no means made anything "unwatchable" or anything of the sort. And it probably had some form of purpose I was too oblivious to notice. But still, loved the runs, the hate is incredibly unnecessary.

possibly! i dont know if there has been many case studies on that, its primarily a north american phenomenon. but i dont see why not. it makes sense!

damn you guys really have it out for vorp a dorp. let me say also, this commentary stuff is hard. sometimes you have tons of knowledge and it's really hard to figure out what to talk about with so much going on in a tight and technical run like this. and we rarely get a chance to practice commentary like this.
i also had a number of times to practice commentary during this sgdq. i sat in on the run before this and on the castlevania legacy of darkness run. good commentary is very hard even with practice.

I personally enjoyed the insightful commentary, and like others have said, if you don't like the commentary go and watch a different AGDQ / SGDQ stream of Super Meat Boy.

there is generally 20-30 minutes of set up time between games/blocks and this run was only like 20 minutes I think the donation tracker can wait.
