I'm 70 and I'm from the 60 generation of muscle cars. My previous bikes have been V Twin strokers with 700 lift cam, headwork, ignition etc. That's what I like. I drive a 2006 Big Dog custom pro street pitbull. They are the kind of machines I grew up with and dreamed about. Compliments and stares everywhere I go. It helps to be atleast 6 feet tall to be comfortable with the forward controls but it just comes natural to me. My bike is a 117 cu in and it sounds alot more aggressive and intimidating than the earlier model you have in the video. Big Dog is back in business producing 3 models at this time.

Big Dog did very well for a few years - they’re great bikes. Unfortunately, the rich old guys who bought them started selling them after a couple years for half of what they paid for them. So why spend twice the money on a new one. This is what killed Big Dog, according to a former BD dealer. (And screw those Furys..)
Considering that all kinds of fools, many who had never ridden a bike in their life starting watching Discovery Channel and decided that they had to buy a chopper and ATMing their house to buy them. Of course it depressed the market after the housing market crashed.

One of the things that I really like is how you take the same route every ride. It makes me feel like I kind of know the area or some thing. Mostly it’s a good example of how you ride the bike out.

That being said Big Dog is back in business and made in Wichita Kansas.
I can't see for sure, but I don't believe those are the mirrors that came on the bike from the factory.
That model bike was not considered a chopper its considered a pro street model.
The S&S engines are the best in the business I've been using their products for decades at the racetrack and on the street.
My personal advice is don't let the average M.M.I. graduate at Harley dealer work on an S&S engine, don't be fooled.
The transmission should be a Baker and it was the best aftermarket trans ever made, Burt Baker builds some of the best.
As far as the clunk clunk clunk in the shifting probably not much more than a bushing in the forward control shift linkage a $5 fix.

SARGE BULLDOG the clank from the shifting is because the trans gears are dog paws like Harley.
As an average MMI graduate currently working at a Harley dealer. your average MMI grad isnt working on stock Harley engines either. Opening up an engine from the dealers perspective is a job for someone who is proven to be capable and reliable. Even though i feel confident doing it... doing it in a reasonable amount of time is another matter entirely though lol.

Am I the only person who absolutely loves choppers 😅, like they look amazing sound amazing and yeah it can hurt the tush but I have the most fun on choppers.
They look great. But they are a prime example of form over function. What matters is what you like. there are lots of bikes I love that lots of people don't like the V-Rod. Just enjoy what you like. :)
for decadesI drove my dirt bikes, sport bikes and street bikes from Hondas to heritage springers. In the early 200's I got a 1974 KZ1000 chopper with a girder front end with a clear title on ebay for only 2k. I opened the top and cleaned the carbon out of the cylinders and it ran like a whole new bike. I FELL IN LOVE with riding that rigid chopper and in a couple months from now I will have my very own , ground up, completely custom chopper finished. Yeah I love the way a chopper rides. Of course with something so custom you can build it to be a pain in the ass to drive or to drive well and anything in between.

Several years back, I had an older coworker that bought a real nice Big Dog chopper (I think it was a Mastiff iirc). He really thought that thing was about as muscular as a bike can get. That great big American v-twin torque monster was the envy of the shop we worked at. Everyone always kinda chuckled when I expresses my doubt that his big, nasty 117 cubic inch beast was faster than my 30 year old 65 cubic inch standard Honda.
One day, we happened to be taking the same route home after work. Once we found ourselves on a decently straight, open road, I looked back at him, and started blipping my throttle a bit to goad him into a competition of speed. He took the bait. As he began creeping up beside me, I slowly rolled on the throttle, and he continued until he was beside me. I heard him pin the throttle, and it was on. It wasn't on for long, though, as he immediately learned why the V65 Sabre (and it's sister the V65 Magna) is on Wikipedia's List of Fastest Production Motorcycles by Acceleration. He was surprised to say the least, as were all our coworkers the next day when he confessed. I don't know if it's related, and I never asked, but he sold that bike within the next few weeks.
I have a dyna. First cruiser I've owned sports bikes and mx bikes before it. It's a giant mini bike. If your bragging about being faster than a big twin motor... your slow!! The fact your racing Harleys essentially... tells me.. your slow. Harleys are not fast never were. Quick...eeehh to 80 sure.
Not fast. Never sorry. A 2015 1690cc big twin is like 70hp at the wheel stock. A 40 year old zx7r ... 750cc is 100+hp. Not even in the same category. For a reason. You don't race a Cadillac Eldorado against a lotus. People just make terrible comparisons and match ups.
Block head has 131in ... 150hp 150ft
M8 harley. Barely as fast as yamahas mt 9. A cruiser version of a sports bike. It's just stupid. So once again if you are bragging about racing Harleys... your slow.
Not that the magna was no sport bike. But.. it was from a company that actually had to compete with other contender. Harley has no natural competition. No matter how hard other companys target harley or that platform. In the end no loyalist are swayed. So harley and big twin platforms are free to continue making extremely underwhelming bikes. Second, I wasn't bragging. I was telling a story that is all too common; a big v-twin owner that thinks their bike is seriously fast. YOU may know better since you owned sport bikes in the past, but that's not the case for sooo many others. I have a buddy that genuinely thought his Fat Bob could take my current "little rice grinder." I didn't need to prove to him how wrong he was because we met somebody on a ride one day that recognized my bike, and during this person's fit of excitement, my buddy figured out that he may not have a very good chance against my Honda Blackbird.
Again, not bragging. Simply sharing a tale of corrected ignorance and arrogance. Those people are NOT the minority of Harley owners.
@@RetrOGz the race was between my V65 Sabre and a Chopper. My Blackbird came later. I have one buddy with a Harley that has raced me a couple times on that, but that was just for giggles.

Big Dog sold a model called the Chopper. I test rode it back in the day. A friend of mine still has his K-9, that has a sick custom paint job. It is even more radical than the Chopper.

Everything you didnt like about the bike was added on the bike after it was manufactured . Pipes, mirrors, foot controls. Those are not original styles to the bike on this example you are riding. I worked for the Big Dog factory for 20 years... We are still in business BTW ;-)
You should try Thunder Mountain Custom Cycles. 80% to 90% Harley Davidson. I ride a TMCC Keystone daily. Long bike, softail, 300mm wheel, low, long and fun. I have done 300 mile days on it no problem. They are not "easy" rides. You have to RIDE the bike, not just get on and go. You have to be very far "ahead" of the bike. Very much worth the effort and will make you a better rider over all. In the end all bikes are personal taste, ride what you love, and be grateful for the brother next to you whatever he is on.

I ride 2002 Big Dog Pit bull hardtail. The bike is a head-turner. Fun as hell to ride. She rides rough on a rough road but smooth on a smooth road. I love it!!!!

Big dog just came back. A few months back. A chopper isn’t hard to ride if it’s set up right. Not trolling but I can’t see how putting down the bike and the set up would help sell the bike. I see a trend in this with others who sell stuff but to me I can’t see how it helps just my views on that

Honestly Sean, I feel the same as you about choppers but that one seems to have decent functionality and would probably do ok on a day trip but either way it's a bad-ass bike and i bet you can get the 0-60 in under 5 seconds once you figured it out.
The newer ones had a Baker six speed and shifted nice.
Love my 01 BigDog Husky with S&S 107. Take trips from Alabama gulf coast with no problems and im 68 yrs old. Have had many bikes in over 50 yrs of riding and like this one the best. Second favorite was 02 Honda Superhawk 996, still miss that bike. BigDog is back and building awesome bikes.

The only bad thing about Big Dogs is wiring problems. I got a Big Dog chopper with a 117 & a Baker 6 speed right hand side drive 250 rear tire VERY VERY FAST ! PULLS A MEAN HOLE SHOT ! Had to re wire it very easy to do you can pick this bikes up very cheap lot of bang for the buck !
Big Dogs were notorious for electrical issues but we’re good looking bikes. American Ironhorse made a much more reliable chopper.
To each their own but I love my chopper and have no issues riding it local and long distances. Choppers are coming back into popularity and the prices on used choppers is starting to rise as the demand is getting bigger right now.
Back in the 70s and 80s when Easyrider magazine was popular the long forks and tall front wheel were all about smooth and straight riding on the highway.
I've seen one at a local dealership used for $15k. Very low miles. I was surprised it was that cheap.

Got a bigdog 2005 chopper...love it! It rides great. It is the monster truck of motorcycles! No harley dealership will work on it though!
I worked at a dealership that sold Big Dogs for years and can only say that HALF of this guys statements are BULL CRAP!! They were just a reliable as any other motorcycle UNLESS the customers just beat the crap out of them (which they did) and abuse them!! Any motorcycle breaks if you beat on them enough!!
To the guy that did this video: You really need to do some research before you open your mouth and look like a fool. Big Dog was and is still rated #1 custom manufactured motorcycle on the road today. I am on my 3rd one, and would not own anything else. My last one had over 90,000 miles on it when I sold it to another guy, who is still riding it. I know many guys that have over 130,000 on theirs, and they are still going strong. You don't get that many miles on a bike, bar hopping. These bikes were designed to for long distance runs, and are very comfortable to ride all day long.
Big Dog may have got caught up in the same mess everybody else was in, when the economy crashed, but while everyone else shut down, Big Dog went into research and development, and produced bikes under the name Kansas Motorcycle works. Then in 2016, the new owners acquired the rights to the Big Dog name, an continue to product top of the line bikes.
I am not affiliated with the company, I just did my research, as any Big Dog owner would.
So do your own research, and redo your video properly .

Very well said. I own a 2008 pitbull and k9. Had a 2005 and 2006 ridgeback. Ive bought all of them new. Yes ive had some problems with my pitbull wiring but love everyone one of my bigdogs. Most of these people don't know shit about these bikes. The guy that made the video damn sure doesn't have a clue about bigdogs. I can't ride my bike anywhere without people coming up to me and telling me how nice my bikes are. My first bike was a harley fb and the first bigdog i saw i knew then i had to have one and ive never regreted buying anyone of my bigdogs. Probably ride a bigdog until i can't ride anymore. And these idiot's talking about them not handling, these bikes corner very well and are very comfortable to ride. And unlike most of these people ive road, streetgluides,roadkings etc. Nothing compares to my DOGS.

I have a 2001 Mastiff and ride it to work 3-4 days a week. And I’m 6’5”. Very rideable bike. Beware of the stock wiring though. Had the entire bike rewired and properly sheathed after multiple lighting and ignition issues.
Yeah, i put a Ultima ignition in my 01 Husky and it runs great.

Like everything else in the world language is extremely important. I'm an old guy been building choppers since the late 60s. A chopper is a bike that's been modified from an actual Factory bike. A bike that's put together with aftermarket parts is a custom. Not a chopper. Toppers don't have to be rigid frame they can be a sprung frame. So I've got my 75 Shovelhead chopper and you have a custom. Just saying. It's in the language.
I never cared for the long raked out front ends and fat 300+ rear tires, but Indian Larry's bikes certainly appealed to me back in the day ...that twisted down tube was bad-ass.
Nowadays, it's all about comfort for me ...no need to impress anyone.
If I were to buy a chopper it would be the honda fury. I have never had a bad experience with anything built by Honda, they are dam near bulletproof.
I agree with you about the brand, I ride a Shadow 750. But that Fury looks like a cartoon. I like the Stryker/Raider for the production chopper.
If your looking at a dependable chopper look at the Yamaha Raider. It has a 1854cc/113ci, 90hp motor, 210mm stock rear wheel that you can throw a 250mm on with no mods to the rim or swingarm. 40 total rake and up angle gas tank for that chopper look. I have a 2012 Yamaha Raider S, (S is the chrome version) and LOVE IT. I threw some quick disconnect saddlebags for trips that I take off when at home. And probably gonna get a quick disconnect Memphis Shades fairing for trips also. I have my cell and GoPro mounted to the bars for videoing vacations, and use google maps and spotify to my helmet for directions and music.

@@tucoramirez8397 yeah but it takes a lot for a honda to become old. We had an 84 honda 200M, that thing survived 5 teenagers. Maintenance sure but nothing crazy. Long after it would ride we would still be able to start it, sitting out in thd weather by the barn.
I had a 2006 Mastiff and it was more refined in terms of forward controls than the one you have here. The Mastiff is more of a Pro Street Musclebike than a chopper. Big Dog made a Chopper Model, a Ridgeback Model and a K9 Model and all of those were more "Chopper" style than the Mastiff. I traded my Mastiff for a K9 with a 300 rear tire in 2008 and have owned that bike ever since. I'll probably ride it until I physically can't handle it anymore. Replace thos mirrors, they don't have enough rise for those handlebars.
Big Dog is selling new bikes now. I have an 06 Big Dog Chopper (117, 35MPG) that's very stable and great for lane splitting. If you're over 6', you need to extend the forward controls. I can't tell you how many people have wanted to have their photo taken with my bike, and most think it looks much more expensive than it was. I would suggest another bike for trips longer than a few hundred miles.
I have a 2006 Thunder Mountain Custom Cycles Keystone that IMHO beats BigDog, American Iron Horse, and O.C.C. junk. Real Harley power and fuel injection (Screaming Eagle 103), smooth easy shifting Baker 6 speed. I trip 3 or 4 days on it comfortably. Softail parts bin fits almost everything: engine, brakes, electronics, pipes, controls. Like all "choppers" bargain prices compared to original prices. Softail frame with a properly engineered front end makes a good riding, fun bike.
I have the same bike but 2008 with the Screaming Eagle 110. Love it! Thunder Mountain Keystone Chopper 300 is the best engineered Chopper in my opinion! The 300 rear tire corners way easier than some might think when it's on a properly engineered bike. Running a 260 on the rear right now and it corners quickly!
Oh, and I rode it to Sturgis and back from L.A. last year... Iron Butt on the way home, straight through from Rapid City, SD to Redondo Beach, CA! These bikes were made for the open road!

I always loved the looks of an artfully made chopper, with the long, low rake, like the Easy Rider bike. I didn't like the jacked up front end. That said, I only rode one, that had the long, low front end. That was enough, as far as riding. That one ride killed my desire for one. That was 50 years ago. I still love the looks, and the sound of a well designed Harley chopper, and my best to those who love to ride one, but not me.
That was a very accurate critique. I delivered an iron horse chopper to a guy and you just described everything that I felt riding it. It rode surprisingly well at cruise speeds. The shift lever was all kinds of wonkie also a super close ratio, like down shifts would chirp the rear tire. Mirrors were horrible. Also the counter steer was weird. Took a lot of force to get it to tip into a turn then it would get super lite… definitely sketchy feeling. Kinda felt like pushing a coffee table across the carpet and then you suddenly hit the tile floor. Lol
Guess I'm different because I loved riding my Bigdog K9. At the same time I owned a 2008 Raider S.
Both were great bikes.
if it don't turn the Geometry is off in the rake for the length of the forks Had a 64 panhead rigid frame springer front end and a Deloroto 2 barrel carb with accelerator pumps finished it with the hottest morris magneto I could get. That's Old School Deluxe. Loved it!
Years ago on my Dyna, I did a 2000+ mile ride with a buddy who had a Big Dog Mastiff. It drew a crowd everywhere we went, but that big engine GULPED gas and vibrated him to death and things started falling off the bike. We had to stop for parts at Harley dealers and a Home Depot. I also had to slow down in the Rockies for him because his bike had a hard time in the mountain twisties. But man, did he look cool!

Real choppers are built by the rider... not manufactured. If you ride it, you should know it enough to service and work on it yourself.
I mean "real chopper" kinda. Chopper nowadays is more of a description of the style of the bike. Historically it was something you literally modified (chopped) the frame to customize. Modern chopper-style is extended rake and fat tire lower seat height.
But 100% if you own a bike you shouldn't be afraid to service it (all the basics) but know your limits. Don't do a whole top-end rebuild if you've never turned a wrench, but for sure change your own oil, battery and brakes.

S&S has been the leader in v twin performance engine longer then anyone and there over all design is based on easy wrenching performance and harley engine replacement and any raked out chopper is designed for bar hopping not road trips I love my yamaha raider but if I could trade it for a BIG DOG SOFTAIL I WOULD IN A HEART BEAT
All I had ridden my whole life was crotch rockets then one day I switched bikes with my buddy and rode his chopper through town . I thought it was the best riding bike in the world. So much better of a ride compared to a crotch rocket.

I rode a chopper in the 70's, but now its about cornering,and performance.
I'll never forget looking at a 80k bourget chopper and being told I could get it for 450.00 a month and asking him how that's possible and almost choking as he told me on a 20 year loan gotta love the financial ignorance in the 2000 01 & 02 before the bankruptcy free for all after that
its what caused the housing bubble to burst. they were mortgaging bikes boats hot rods sand cars etc. i those days i was building high end sand cars 100-200k on average. we put vins on them and people would roll them into their refi. i saw a lot of people lose their ass.

I have a co-worker who took a Grom around Lake Superior. He's an iron butt guy and was going for the "not right" category with that ride. However, due to head winds in Ontario he ended up missing his timeframe. He wants to try again sometime.
its more like a motorcycle version of a blown big block model T, with the crome steering column sticking straight up from the floor... a musclecar would be more like a cb1300 or a zrx1100, similar concept, just really comfortable
I'm not sure if it was big dog but some of the custom motorcycle company's had a few different positions for the foot controls and handle bars when you ordered them they had a mock up frame that you sat on and they were able to move the shifter and brake to the ideal position for the buyer. They did the same with the handle bars.
If you ask why you should buy a chopper, then you definitely shouldn't buy a chopper.
I learned to ride on a chopper in the late 60s, an old Panhead with a kick start. You learned fast! One of the most bouncy rides ever!

7 years ago, I had a NEW Big Dog for a month. Turned into a piece of shit almost immediately, poor quality, unreliable, lemon lawed it, got my money back. Buyer beware!

I worked for corbit manufacturing in st.charls mo back in the day we used to machine aluminum parts for them
"It's no Fury" - the right comparison would have been to a VT1300 Sabre, as this mutt is what obviously inspired the Sabre with its raked out frame and geometry. I ride a Sabre and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on a direct comparison. I paid about $5k for my Sabre at 12,000 miles and all I've done to it in 5,000 miles is ditch the danger Dunlops in favour of some Shinko Whitewalls, which got the bike smooth and stable. Ok, this hound would have twice the hp but still the Sabre at a quarter the price is the smart buy for my money.

Worked at an indy shop in the early 2000's. We serviced a lot of these mid life crisis bikes. Big Dog's were built with quality components. I wouldn't recommend any of these type of bikes for an only motorcycle unless you were a 15 miles a week rider.
Yeh because sports bikes are so lovely to ride, aching wrists, back of the neck, cramped knees, slamming your nuts into the tank when braking. It's a lovely experience and way better than a laid back chopper...
I have a 70s stretched, raked and lowered harley. 9' wheelbase. Vintage. Your right. Its a different experience. My bike makes you pay attention to everything. Sometimes I want to ride as part of the machinery. When I want to relax I jump on my wideglide. When I want to experience the experience I jump on my long bike. 57 ironhead on late 60s early 70s frame. Springer hardtail. Like your vids. Keep it up. Keep it cool and keep it open.

Over 40k on my BidDog Husky and love it. Trips from gulf coast to tennessee often, with no problems. Just man up and shift it like you mean it. And i do drag those Martin Bros pipes every now and then..lol

I just got the first big dog bagger ever made in my driveway. My dad bought it from the guy who maped the factory and daily drove it for 20 years. I'm restoring it back to original. Basically a flh with a little rake. Funny thing it says BigD on the title.
That's an old ass bigdog. I own 3 late model bigdogs and they ride and handle great. Bigdog put a lot of engineering into their bikes 2005 and up. Their great bikes. I wouldn't trade any of them for any bike out there.

I have got a American Ironhorse Texas - modified the forward controls so they are super comfortable the mirrors are perfect the ride on corners is a missions but on straights with the power it rocks my shifter is real low so shifts are fast and soo smooth - will keep my bike forever
My boxer gets 42mpg at 70 and 75 have Andrew's ev72 cam ,best mod so far.

Talking of clunky gearchanges:
Back in '89 I bought a brand new CZ 350 two-stroke-a CZ 250 frame with the 350 Oilmaster motor in it. It had a combined kickstart and gearchange lever. To change up, I was lifting my boot clean off the footrest!
Dad had one of these. At the time I think iron horse was around too.
Big dog Cycles out of Kansas City Kansas run by Mr Coleman of Coleman stove tried very hard to make a quality product. They used nothing but the best of parts at the time they're fit in quality was excellent. But The Fad went away and so today the great bike to have a keeper

The reason they make choppers cafe racers crotch rockets cruisers etc.. is because people like different styles. Evey time I see one of your videos you're ripping on the bike no matter what kind it is telling people you wouldn't own this or you wouldn't ride that. Maybe you should sell golf carts instead of bikes. I've owned a Big Dog k9 for 8 years and have gotten compliments on it every time I ride it. To each his or her own.

Try iron horse Texas chopper.. takes a few day's to understand.. (soft-tail) when I was having some work done on mine.. I was riding a nightmare..errr night train.. HD wouldn't stop ..had to look away from road (down at tank) for gauges.. so tiny too.. American Iron Horse Texas Chopper..(soft tail)
