Kirby's Augusta - A Hollywood Reporter's Mysterious Death

  • A REPORTER’S MYSTERIOUS DEATH
    It happens all the time.
A celebrity journalist comes to town and everyone tries to impress.
They wine. They dine. They put on a grand show.
And a few weeks later the story comes out and the town gets trashed anyway.
It happened to Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics.
And it happened to Augusta in the spring of 1953.
    The journalist was Dorothy Kilgallen.
She's pretty much forgotten today, but half a century ago Kilgallen was part Barbara Walters and part Oprah Winfrey, with a dash of Sylvia Cooper thrown in.
A nationally known newspaper reporter, author and screenwriter, Kilgallen was a Hollywood columnist, a radio personality and a regular panelist on the TV show What's My Line?where her perceptive interviewing skills were on display each week as she tried to guess the profession of a mystery guest.
She came to Augusta 61 years ago this spring because everyone else was coming to Augusta, too.
We were a boom town with construction at Fort Gordon and the "bomb plant" bringing in people and jobs.
Kilgallen was assigned to to write an article on such boom towns for Good Housekeeping Magazine.
Chronicle editor Louis Harris did what he could to keep Killgallen happy - HE TOOK HER TO A BAR.
Specifically to the Bon Air Hotel and plied her with cocktails. He took her to the Colonial Club for socializing. She also went to the Town Tavern for lobster, which she said was pretty good for $3.50.
Kilgallen saw all the commerce and construction and said of our town: "It is as if Scarlett O'Hara had come home from the ball, wiggled out of her satin gown, and put on a space suit."
But Kilgallen was at heart a reporter, and she quickly found another side of Augusta that most boom towns seem to share - gambling.
    A lot of it.
When her article came out in April 1953, Kilgallen described visit after visit to Augusta's many gambling establishments.
This was sort of embarrassing because Mayor Hugh Hamilton had run for office the year before on a vow to get rid of it.
After the article came out, Mayor Hamilton demanded an apology..
The Richmond County grand jury vowed, however, to, dutifully announcing it on The Chronicle's front page.
    Well, you know what happened?
    Not much.
There does not seem to be any follow-up news coverage of grand jury actions or developments.
As for Kilgallen she dashed off to England to cover the June 2 crowning of Queen Elizabeth.
She continued to maintain a high media profile, and was known for having excellent sources within the Washington spy community, frequently offering scoops on Castro and the CIA.
But it was the last years of Dorothy Kilgallen's life that grew very, very interesting.
A Hollywood insider, she knew President Kennedy and his girlfriends and hinted at liaisons with movie star Marilyn Monroe.
After Kennedy's death in Dallas, Kilgallen went to Texas to cover the case. Jack Ruby, the bar owner who shot assassin Lee Harvey Oswald on national TV, gave her private interviews. She told her friends that she was writing a book that would tell the story of who really killed JFK
    That book was never written.
In late 1965 -- soon after returning from interviews in Dallas -- Kilgallen was found dead in her New York home.
They said she was sitting up in a bed in a room she never used, apparently reading a best-seller she had already read and not wearing her glasses, without which she could not see.
Oh, and her notes on the Kennedy case were missing. They were never found.
Initially, the story was she'd died of a heart attack. However, further tests indicated a curious alcohol-drug overdose, some said similar to Marilyn Monroe’s.
Louis Harris -- by then the executive editor -- wrote a nice column about Dorothy Kilgallen for the paper.
It was the same paper that JUST months before had unleashed its investigative and editorial staff on what would become one of The Chronicle's most talked about efforts ever -- an undercover series on the problems of gambling in Augusta.

She never interview him. Not only has this so called exclusive been refuted by Hugh Aynesworth, as was New York reporter Bob Considine, it has also been disputed by Earl Ruby and his attorney Elmer Gertz. She was one of many reporters that had requested access for an interview but was denied as were others due to security purposes. Here is another source, albeit lengthy, that will further clarify the point.

@White_Rook - Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the link to the article. I was too young to remember Dorothy when she died, but have been a big WML fan on TH-cam and have grown to really like that show and her. I am trying to do my homework via the internet looking at all sources of who killed JFK, and you may be right, but if she died of an overdose or some other means, why was all her notes on the case taken? That is very suspicious to me. If it was all a hoax who cares what she wrote, as it could be proven false. That part I don’t understand.

@@missourimanful I can't answer the question about her notes. I'm still trying to find a credible source on that one.

I discovered Dorothy and What’s My Line only a few months ago, and that cast of characters is without a doubt the most interesting group of people I’ve ever come across. Dorothy was light years ahead of her time. Everything she’s said and done seems modern and holds up extremely well in today’s world. I’ve changed my mind a dozen times between whether she was murdered or if she committed suicide. There are very strong arguments for both. Either way, she was an incredible person and is greatly missed

Mark Shaw's book is nothing but tabloid trash. Hugh Aynesworth was a Dallas reporter back then, he covered the whole Ruby trial and the supposed meeting between Kilgallen and Ruby never took place. I believe she just leaned over for a moment to say something to Ruby during a break. Hugh is still alive, and has said the same thing from day one. Ask yourself one question, if Kilgallen had this vital information, why did she die almost 2 years after Ruby?? Don't you think "they" would have wanted to get to her long before this?? She had plenty of time to spill the beans, yet not a single word to anyone, about anything. Bogus.

If people in the United Kingdom are enjoying videos about Dorothy Kilgallen or various episodes of What’s My Line on which she uses her intelligence, they should thank Americans for providing the suspense or amusement.
If Americans hadn’t revived interest in this woman more than 25 years after her death, English people would not have.
The reason that the Marilyn Monroe conspiracy got multimedia exposure as far back as 1985 is that journalist Anthony Summers, who was based in Ireland and the United Kingdom at the time, had been familiar with Marilyn since he was a child. Millions of Irish and English people knew who she was even if they had been born during her last years or after she died. Her movies were telecast there and revived in cinemas in London and Dublin throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
So it was easy for a Londoner to tell a Dublin resident that twenty years ago Marilyn Monroe died possibly under mysterious circumstances. They were already familiar with the American person whose death might have been suspicious.
But the name Dorothy Kilgallen meant nothing to them for many decades until Americans uploaded video of her to TH-cam. It is nice that a United Kingdom resident such as you is learning that an American woman could have been famous because of her intelligence long ago. You’re welcome.

Kilgallen was ahead of her time. She knew what we all now know. That Oswald was a friend of Kennedy; that he did not shoot the president; that Kennedy was shot from behind with a revolver or a hand gun; that Kennedy was alive when he was taken into hospital but finished off there; that the bodies were swapped so there would be no proof of any of this. Kilgallen was not brilliant. She was very mediocre. But she smelled the story and she went for it. Sadly, what the mediocre minded Ms. Kilgallen did not know as that one of her best friends, a co-panelist on `What`s My line?`, was working for the Home Team. It was either he or someone else whom she knew and trusted that gained access to her apartment on the night she was murdered. The report mentions there was no forced entry so Kilgallen had to have known and trusted the man. Shall we all be PARANOID about door men cause the concierge in her building obviously knew whoever the friend was on the night of Kilgallen`s death he arrived with 2/3 thugs (probably dressed as work men alleged there to fix the plumbing or whatever)!!

Kilgallen had one over-the-railing exchange with Ruby in court, where he could have come forward and said anything, her reporting was just going to be one chapter of a larger book about trials she had covered and was not due to be published until months later, hardly an urgent expose. She did not die until *twenty months* later, said nothing explosive in her regular news column, her trademark boasting aside, never displayed any sign she possessed information dangerous to her own safety, even appearing on her regular gig on What's My Line without a care in the world.
She was hardly less high-profile a person than JFK himself and murdering her would attract a massive amount of attention, publicity and investigation. How exactly did some phantom conspiracy approach and recruit the cops on the New York City Police Department to become accessories to murder to no gain to themselves whatsoever without any of them ever cracking, confessing or being found out in 57 years.
Oddly enough, whatever sinister villains had to take a massive risk to "rub her out" never touched any witness in or near the limo, in the plaza, filming the assassination, in the TSBD, on the Secret Service, in the motorcade, at the Tippit crime scene, Oswald's landlady, the shoe store clerk, any witness in the theater, any of the medical staff at either hospital, Ruby himself, Jim Garrison or any of his stooges, or any of the crackpot conspiracy authors who spent years crowing loud and long about how they were going to blow the case wide open...
