Timeless melody to me was about mavers talking about his own frustration with his OCD and being unable to accept his music and put it into words how he felt and how he wanted his music to feel. It was an escape to break the chain of his obsessive mind, the melody always finds him, but he can never say what he wants to say. Its genius
There is brilliant book on British songwriters. Mavers is in it, he talks about the music was already there he just found the chords & arranged the words. It's true, & an interesting view into his Mind.
What a group!!! What an album!!! It blew me away when I bought it when it was released, 18 I was. It still blows me away. A crying shame we only got one album. Not enough original 1960s dust on the mixing desk obviously lol. Another belter of an upload from ScottishTeeVee as well. Nice one.
I can sense the frustration and boredom of John Power about Lee Mavers' speeches about the sound the record had to get. Not surprisingly, soon after he left the group tired of the perfectionism delusions of Mavers. Sad to see them so annoyed by the sound of one of the most beautiful records ever.
The La's is a great shame. They should've been big, but Mavers completely sabotaged any chance of that. They had so much money thrown at them - much more than any new band gets these days. People like Mavers are the reason indie labels get taken over by Majors and why record labels in general don't want to take a chance on a new band.
@@Picnicl it's a tragedy that instead of 5 or 6 different La's albums, we only have the one album. What I'm saying is that although most people know the song 'There She Goes' The La's are still pretty obscure. Mavers is largely to blame as instead of seizing the opportunity that was given to him he sabotaged it - recording the same album over and over and then when it did eventually come out he used every opportunity to say how shit he thought it was. That kind of behaviour generally doesn't lead to global success.
The fact that it's been 30 years since the album came out and Mavers still hasn't released any new material kind of proves that John made the right decision in leaving. As great as Mavers' talent/songs were/are it's pretty pointless if you never release anything.
@@ryansams1268 if there were more people in the world like Mavers at that time we wouldn’t have to put up with all the manufacturerd bullshit that has cluttered the music industry to date.Mavers ain’t no puppet never will be….who wants to here 5 over produced albums driven by greed leading to global success……..unfortunately that’s when music gets lost…..that’s the real TRAGEDY
Love it. So few artists have an independent stance on what they do. I guess The Fall might be on a similar internal trajectory, but The La's had a much bigger impact on UK bands. They were pretty much the short cut to Oasis for better or worse.
I find it so strange that when I saw the LA's live, they sounded almost exactly the same as the record that Lee hated so much. I guess it's us, the listener's that got lucky with that one album which will forever be a timeless classic.
I don’t understand why he was so critical of the album? When they played live it wasn’t that different and he never released anything else to better express his vision. I wonder now that he’s older he looks back on it and thinks maybe it wasn’t so bad afterall.
I think he resented the fact that it was all chopped up and stitched together by a producer. They put it together like a hip hop album or something lol
"voices where there weren't voices" = John didnt' get round to his backing vocals for the Lillywhite sessions so they#re cribbed from earlier seshes like Leckie's and Hedges'
I wonder if he is referring to looking glass. If he is he should be thankful because that song sounds incredible on the album. Best ending to a record ever
Thanks for that info, I have another TH-cam channel, where I wander around abandoned buildings, castles stately homes, industrial complexes etc, so I really did wonder where that was filmed.
Yeah - they could’ve dominated the 90’s with his song writing talent 🥲. I’m sure I recall Noel saying in an interview that in the early days of Oasis, he only feared The La’s and Lee’s songwriting skills - but thankfully for them a 2nd album never materialised .
I would love to see a La’s LP recorded and mixed in 2 weeks produced by Billy Childish or barring that a Billy Childish LP produced by Lee Mavers that forces Billy to take 2 weeks with a record. Where do I crowd fund that one?
The idiots at the Recird label should have got a mobile recording studio and recorded the band where "They" were happiest. Anyway inspite of it all you can't completely hide how Original brilliant the tunes are. Magic is hard to catch and bottle to sell.
I was around 14 years old. At the supermarket, the tapes were protected against theft by large hard plastic cases... you could feel clever if you managed to steal one. I stole this one just because I liked the cover. Since then, it has remained one of my favorite albums.
@Stavroguine826 Be careful thats the kind of thing the police like to open a cold case review of, then make a documentary, probably with some of The La`s music in the background.
@@ScottishTeeVee I know - I've never seen him live as I only heard of/got into The La's in 2012. I've sent him a letter. Maybe he has health issues - who knows? Or maybe he is just happy being a recluse, but it's such a shame to keep all that talent hidden away!
Mani from the stone roses wrote every single La's song in the 80s. He would finish a song then teach it to Lee Mavers at an open mic night in Widness. Mani never takes credit for this as he is a famously humble and shy individual.

Maybe it might explain why he won't make a living from touring ,There she goes has kept him going as still played on the radio .

Glad you enjoyed this Steven.
Amazing band, whatever the line up. We bang on about the Stone Roses and Oasis but the La's had more. I miss them!
Absolutely
I don't understand why they weren't bigger, if they came alone a few years later when "britpop" was popular they'd have ruled the roost

The funny thing is EVERY version of these songs sound great to my ears. They are so fucking good the songs can't be ruined.

Best album ever made. Fact.
I’d say it’s the best debut album ever 👍
Amazing footage!
Thank you Gerardo
2:27 - you can hear how upset he was about it.
Good job preserving this 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
The La's can do no wrong.
Absolutely
Amazing this ! ❤
Love that big old BMW, and the La’s of course
Auld BMWs and Lee Mavers, can't think of 2 cooler things.
Great video thanks!

Innocence corrupted.
That said, it would have been interesting to hear what Mavers actually wanted it to sound like

The BBC sessions sound way better
From what I've read I think it's grew on him abit more than when it first came out

the guy at the start, his french accent is so strong 😭 i struggled to understand
Thanks for watching and commenting
Even the words they fail me.
Is this the real Liverpool's english accent? I found it so hard to get it (2:30 i.e.).
Manna from heaven
Glad you enjoyed this
ScottishTeeVee amazing
In mavers I trust

All the material was there, hundreds of hours of gold!
Random spot of Pete Townshend's flight case in their practice room.
grafton street dingle 2 12 go ed! great to see it back then, sky scrapers now

Glad you think so!

it like a genius went in the studio and put down some great songs and went "nah it's shit" and F'd off

I'm confused.....so did Lee rate the album or not?
I don't think so, I have another interview where his does say clearly that the album is rubbish
Steve Albinni would of been the lad to capture the La's.
good old antoine
The simple fact remains that 16bluesherbert90 is the most adorable and beautiful of all the women 💕❤.
I wish Lee would come back :/
