      He was never satisfied with the results of the recordings. The released version of the album he apparently hated and that was after several different and costly recording sessions at various studios. In the end the record company needed to release a version. Mavers is a tortured genius. What an album he gave to the world.

      I feel you mate! I'm coming back to the La's every now and then and there's absolute no F*CKING doubt that Lee could have been above John Lennon's skill if he continued. I mean compare the self written songs from "The La's" to The Beatles' debut album. Then listen to the kitchen tape and you know that he was easily able to even top his own debut. "Tears in the rain" - what a f*cking tune! I'm playing that intro riff very often when I pick a guitar anywhere although it's so simple. But everything he does and did is nothing but timeless.
      I understand him. I'm a musician and songwriter myself. The problem is it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get a song recorded in that "perfect way" as it is in your head when you write/compose it.
      Most musicians come to the point where they are like "F*ck it, let's just record it as good as possible and go ahead" but Lee never was like that. Unfortunately.
      Imagine he was and we would have like 10 or 20 albums of "The La's" right now, what a good world would it be to live in.

    • @thebetbetunderground9548
      @thebetbetunderground9548 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tarik A. The world simply has a way of hiding perfection from us as cleverly as it could. I don't know why that is, but I have a guess that it's because we need to stay yearning, dreaming, chasing something somehow. And that's why we're talking about Lee Mavers now!

      If I were some evil being I would drive to his house, take some of his hairs, clone him, drop him a guitar while he's less than one year old and force him to do nothing but music. :P

Tell ya something: I did download this video and I've been watching it so often. I just can't get enough of the mystic in it. Lee Mavers has a very rare talent for hooky melodies exactly as this song demonstrates. Although I like Noel Gallagher and a few of his songs are really great, Mavers has more raw talent but utterly wasted of course. Noel has his head screwed on better. Lee Mavers is the biggest wasted talent in all of pop music, sadly.

    • @Prellium
      @Prellium 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      effluxide I thoroughly agree. I only listen to a few Oasis songs, just not any sung by Liam, I really never liked his voice because he sounds too forced and obviously an attempt to sound like Ian Brown/John Lennon. Lee Mavers is also a genius and indeed the most wasted talent in music history. Syd Barrett would be 2nd and Julian Cope 3rd I guess.

    • @effluxide
      @effluxide 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      bloodnokian
      I agree, I think Liam is just OK at best. The songs done by Noel sound the best and some of the biggest hits weren't the best. Noel has written some really good songs. I like his newer album. There are some great songs on that. Mavers on the other hand when at his best was totally infectious. They are the sorts of songs you listen to over and over again. They are immediately addictive despite their simplicity like a Beatles song or something of that quality. This is the mark of a genius. Even the title of the song performed here is ingenious. A Timeless Melody is exactly what the song is. It can take more time to get some of Noel's songs. I think some of his later ones are the best rather than the earlier Oasis.
      Yes, I agree again about Syd Barret, Another wasted genius.

    How is it that music, or more specifically, certain songs can affect you in the most surprising way? I absolutely love The LA's album. One of the best albums easily of all time in its entirety. One of the few albums I can put on start to finish and every song is a winner.
    Just these 2 guys playing right now seem ... very magical in the most natural way. I think is because I just realized these guys are the real deal. No tricks or gimmickry, they've got the goods and I'll be damned if they didn't deliver. The way they pull it off just the 2 of them is almost unbelievable. The way he improvises the guitar solo making noises with his voice gave me a chuckle at first, but that sounded amazing, spot on. I've got a tear rolling down my cheek but I'm not sure exactly why. Me thinks maybe the melancholy got to me ... yea, that's it, the melancholy. I can't believe I didn't go to see this band when they came to Los Angeles and it is really bugging me trying to remember what was going on in my life at that time that would have kept me from seeing them ... hmpf. Oh well, I know I tried but there is no way I could have seen or even known about every great band that came to town.

    I remember the spring of 1991...lots of change and tumult in my life, the future not very certain. What was a constant, though, was the excellent quality of music that was coming over the airwaves of 99.1 WHFS in Annapolis, MD: Pixies, Violent Femmes, Charlatan's UK, Too Much Joy, and yes, The La's. Played their CD over and over and over again.

      @@michaelesgro9506 I missed that concert, Michael. I remember you guys had bad weather for that one, yes? I went the following year at the Prince George's Equestrian Center...Soup Dragons headlined, with Wolfgang Press, Charlatan's UK, Catherine Wheel, and two of my favorite bands: They Might Be Giants and The Ocean Blue. I also love the Pixies and have seen them three times, two of them with Weezer. Alternative radio, at least in DC, is DEAD these days. I listen to 1st Wave on Sirius XM to get my fix of those glorious days when HFS was still alive.

      @@michaelesgro9506 Your musical background sounds very accomplished. We are also finding similarities in more than just music: My father and sister went to Purdue University. Also have two nephews who are Radiohead fanatics. One of them who went to the Berklee School of Music and another has a side gig playing drums in a band called "Two Rocks Rye." They're predominantly a cover band and sound very authentic. First time I saw them, the bar begged for an encore and got a great rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious." Also, I called talk Ska all day: The Specials, Rancid, Sublime, Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, etc.
