    Most of you may have hardly heard of this small country nestled on the island of Borneo, but Brunei is a country very rich in natural resources. It affords a wealth that has allowed its Royal House to enjoy one of the most extravagant lifestyles in the world: thousands of luxury cars, dozens of palaces scattered around the globe, airplanes, yachts…. The lavish lifestyle of the Sultan and his family is difficult to accept considering the relatively meager standard of living of the vast majority of Brunei's population.
    And not only that. To consolidate his power, the Sultan, owner, and lord of the country, has not hesitated in establishing a rigid vision of Sharia law, despite the fact that his standard of living is far from the precepts that he imposes on his subjects.
    In this video, we bring you closer to one of the most little-known and strange countries in the world.

    I like to criticize Brunei but i was quite disappointed with how bias, exaggerated and uninformed this video came up to be. So let me straighten some things and give you an insiders perspective on what its like to live as a Bruneian in Brunei.
    1. Brunei has a really great healthcare system that is free and accessible to every citizen of the country that is on par with first world developed countries that have an almost similar system of socialized healthcare. ER waiting time is on par with Singapore and a hell of a lot better than the NHS you have in the UK where patients are turned away for a dental appointment. It has its flaws but as long as ive lived here, ive seen constant developments and improvements within the national healthcare service. Brunei has also now built a new advanced cancer treatment center and teamed up with Germany to establish one of the leading Neuroscience and Stroke Rehabilitation Center in the region. For extremely complex procedures the government will send patients to partnering private hospitals in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur fully covered by the government.
    I just had surgery and the most expensive thing i had to pay for was the lunch i had at the hospital's Coffee Bean outlet i had after being discharged. The doctors (both local and expats) were all highly skilled UK graduates with decades of experience under their belt.
    2. Education, which is also free up to the higher institution level is good compared to the rest of the region. Literacy and numeracy is close to 100% and most people are able to converse in english to a respectable level of proficiency as it is a defacto lingua franca for trade and commerce in the country and is the official medium of instruction in schools. Classrooms are comfortable and all schools have access to modern computer and science equipments.
    Our national university is a top 50 under 50 school and is constantly improving and innovating. According to QS it is ranked at 254, which is not bad for a young national university. The government also sends hundreds of students every year overseas for scholarships fully funded by the government. Bruneian scholarship students in the UK for example on top of having their tuition fully covered by the government also receive a monthly stipend of 1000GBP (and more if you study in an expensive city like london). Besides that, the government also provides low interest loan schemes for Bruneians to study overseas in areas of high national importance.
    3. Standard of living in the country is the highest in the region, only beaten to Singapore. I would say, life is pretty much comfortable for most Bruneians. We have the second highest median income in the region and the cost of living in this country is affordable. We have good quality access to the internet and have one of the highest social media penentrations in the world (3rd in the world, top in SEA). Petrol, electricity and water is really cheap. We have really good food and have adopted the American consumerist culture. Bruneians also travel a lot and spend good money overseas. Interesting fact: Bruneians spend more than USD$1 billion dollars shopping in Malaysia every year. That translates to roughly USD$2.5K for every Bruneian resident each year. East Malaysias tourism sector heavily depends on Bruneian tourists to make a living.
    I agree that as you said that we live under a dictatorship, the sultan is greedy but not evil. Ever since the sharia has been implemented, not one hand has been amputated and not one person stoned to death as we have a moratorium on the death penalty. Sharia is in effect, rarely enforced so its not fair to compare our version of sharia to that of Afghanistan, ISIS or the Middle East.
    There are poor people in Brunei, just as there are poor people in the UK and the US. But they are really the outliers. We arent arab rich but we are comfortable. We are ranked 66 out of 190 for ease of doing business and we have a small but growing number of really successful entrepreneurs doing really cool innovative stuff.
    And i think besides the point that welfare is just a way of silencing the people, the sultan's govt really has given us more than just the bare minimum and i think besides being greedy he really cares about the Bruneian people.
    He can keep all that oil money, the only thing that prospers a nation are free markets and govt deregulation. Not free government handouts. We dont have free speech and the government is really inept and bad at managing the economy but besides that, living in Brunei isnt really that bad.
    I suggest the next time you wna talk about a country, do a lot more intensive research beforehand and mayb try to talk to a local. Not just exaggerated news headlines and gossip.

    My dad worked in Brunei when we were kids. We were very young to remember much but my mom said Brunei was the most peaceful and comfortable country she ever lived. The oil was so cheap that each family had cars per family members. The King used to organize a super feast for locals on EID and his birthday.And they were given a kind of thank you present filled with box of dry fruits and chocolates. He even shook hands with each people. To think that my parents were not even locals and were still invited King shook hands with them and let them take pictures tells a lot about a leader. And yes she used to say how commodity prices remains the same or mostly on sales through out her many years of her stay there.

      @You Mom is Green The people serve the Monarch. Absolutely. There are inheret limitations, however, from whom the monarch draws their right to rule. I don't think it would be very reasonable to say God supports hoarding all of the wealth and inducing stagnation. I'd say the exact opposite, that God rewards charity. Once more, a millionaire giving a dollar to a homeless man means absolutely nothing. The King is not "sharing his wealth", he is hoarding wealth and not injecting it back into the economy in such a way to stimulate growth. He's providing the bare minimum to live, and not allowing hard work to be rewarded or a lack of it to be met with consequences. This not only affects the economy, but the morality of the nation. Unless I'm mistaken in believing that hard work and charity are Islamic virtues.

Since the Shariah Law already affect brunei in 2014 which is Shariah Law penial Code Phase 1 and the Phase 2 is recently post in 2019. This law only affects to LGBT if they open an sex in public (Which is basically stupid person would do right?) This lead to cruel punishment for those LGBT members who playing sex in open public in the kingdom (Like sex in the city near mosque or in public area). But for this punishment to be continued, It's required *4 muslim witness* whatever is he or she must witness the event of the sex in public. The leadership who's ever control an group, country, empire or what ever clans must obey the way Islamic tradition to introduce Shariah Law because being leadership in Muslim is basically pain and highly you get much sins from doing kind things of jobs because if the citizens doing something reckless like the murderer getting much happening, kiddnapers much often which connected to criminal activities is basically a sins for the leader is islam to gain even tho it's the responsibility for leader to maintain the country Harmony. And this also mention in our holy book of quran. For those leader who isn't implement the Shariah Law get punished in heaven when judgement day (The day of End of the World) is coming. I've been to Brunei. Most people there are cool with their lifestyle as it's extremely laid back. People who work don't do very much work, with jobs there being more like hobbies for most people. Everyone gets enough cash from the Sultan to not really need to be employed. It's very similar to Saudi Arabia (been there as well) in that respect, but unlike Saudi, they are tolerant of other religions in Brunei. Considering other places I've been, I can't see the Sultan there as a terrible ruler. He's trying to get more going for his economy, but most people don't really want to do any serious work. He's been complaining a bit about it and telling people the oil won't last forever, but not very many people there are motivated to work at a pace you'd experience in the west.

It impressed me how I never saw a single soul in the streets after sunset (6 pm year round). A curious fact you didn’t mention is that the Sultan once a year (either his birthday or the Ramadhan - don’t remember) opens up his palace to everyone, local or foreigner, to come to eat and feast. People then queue up for hours to shake his hand.

    Its very easy for others to pin point the negative of the country.
    - But when we had great flood, the Sultan in his military boots came to visit and made sure his people are reimbursed for their loss.
    - If you come to Brunei you'll never find beggars or homeless people.
    - If you are sick and no doctors can cure you, you'll be sent to more developed countries like Singapore for treatment. You'll not even fork a single cent.
    - Education is almost completely free here as well.
    There's a lot of things to improve here in Brunei. But name me another leader/politician that made sure his people live in a decent home, have good quality of education, have ability put food on table for families. Basically come here and you'll see how everything is so different than all the news out there. If you are sick, you'll want to be a Bruneian. Saudi realized that they cant depend too much on oil and gas. Being more open minded might be the only way to attract tourist and investors and thus, expand their tourism industry. But gulf states are different from brunei, especially saudi that has income from umrah and hajj. Though it might not be enough for saudi, but they "at least" have something else. My family and I are from Malaysia. In 1986, My dad got a job offer in the airline there and we had to move to Brunei when I was like 3 years old. We stayed there until my dad got a new job offer in Malaysia. So we had to move back to Malaysia when I was like around 16 years old. All I can say is that I miss staying in Brunei. Yes, it is a quiet and peaceful country, good for retiring with family. I was surprised when I heard that western media is trying to attack the small country about the Sultan monarchy's rule and its religion rule. Its not like democracy is any better and their 'But Muh Freedom' thinking. Malaysia is a democratic country but hell it is like a friggin big nation drama here. Every politicians have their own hidden agenda. Every each of them worries about their own pocket. Who suffer? The Malaysian citizen suffer. Atleast in Brunei, there is a clear rule that the citizen should follow and there are less backstabbing going on in the government as the King is the absolute ruler. Of course the only issue about monarchy is that if you get a bad king then the citizen will suffer. But so far the current king did a great job in taking care of its citizen. Until the point where the citizens are too depending on the government support. However I heard that the government is trying to invest into another industries to provide job opportunities to its citizens so that they don't have to depend on oil. The Sultan knows that the oil will not last and he is aging too. He keeps thinking of a way to make sure Brunei could still grow without depending on oil. All I can say no country is perfect and Brunei is not the worst like the media trying to say. You got to look with your own eyes and experience it yourself in a period of time then you decide what is what.

    I meant to spend a bit of time in Brunei, but due to a change in plans I had to pass through it quickly. I got there by ferry from an island that belongs to Malaysia. I checked customs, then had to find a way to get all the way through Brunei, cross the other side into Malaysia and catch a plane at Miri. I only had a couple of hours to make it. I talked to a taxi driver, told him my problem. He agreed and drove me to his house. I waited outside while he changed out of his taxi uniform. We then jumped into his private car, left the taxi there.
    We got onto the highway and hooked it west at 150km/h. The speed made me a bit nervous, the highway was okay, but no road is really safe for those speeds. Got to the border, checked customs without getting out of the car, just like a toll booth. I made it to Miri for my flight. I paid the man around $200 Australian worth in the local currency.
    I wish I'd had time to do some sightseeing.

    Actually, I've known many Brunieans and most always sing the praise of their sultan, they agree that they'd like less Islamic rules and restrictions but they have nothing but praise for their ruler coz he's very generous to them. The average Bruniean has better spending power than most Singaporeans. But yes, Asia is on average very corrupt... but the average Asian person doesn't want to change, so the problem persist and we get leaders like this... don't be too proud in the west though, just see whats happening in the US

      btw... you will never find any islamic leader that is NOT a hypocrite... it's like expecting the vatican to ACTUALLY have saints... again, the problem is that the majority in that society WANT(they might say they don't, but actually they do) these rules... lets admit it, the masses are like an angry mob that require a ruler whom they expect to work their will... and its' this weird battle of wills that brings us such wonderful leaders like trump, hitler, pol pot, stalin, the kims, mao's etc etc

    • @themusicgaragetmg2330
      @themusicgaragetmg2330 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Zahin Shahazad more clearly? I could, but that will probably take a vid just as long as the one above, and knowing how people love to take things out of context just for the sake of attacking something that changes their point of view, it might not be worth the effort.
      But lets say I do, which part would you want clarified? Which part of what I said wasn't clear enough? Perhaps you can also elaborate on what you didn't understand?

    • @themusicgaragetmg2330
      @themusicgaragetmg2330 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Zahin Shahazad ah, thats pretty straight forward, as you've probably watched the vid, you by now must recognise that the sultan and his family aren't exactly subject to the law but it is only administered to the levels of society that aren't connected to the powers that be. So the spirit of the law is introduced to satisfy a very small subset of their society that lets be honest, just want to be "holier than thou"... if really these laws were effective, you wouldn't have people in saudi arabia committing any crime, yet I think they have one day in the week where they actually carry out these limb amputations and beheadings, and yes some of the criminals may seem very despicable, but you can't deny, that these executions and amputations are at best circus for the masses. It solves nothing. Hence the motivation for such laws are at best medieval or can even be argued to be barbaric. Does that statement "spirit of the law" make more sense now?

    • @themusicgaragetmg2330
      @themusicgaragetmg2330 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Zahin Shahazad hmmm... could you see that perhaps you're being biased as well? I don't expect any channel to be free from a point of view, but you have to admit, no islamic country in the last hundred years has contributed much in terms of science, art or sports... and it's because of the constant need to apply "religious rules" to every aspect of their lives. Most muslim artists and scientist only gain traction when they leave islamic nations, same with their sports men and women. I have no choice but to be blunt, but have you dug deeper into what you think is islam? Like into the information NOT being perpetuated by those wanting to perpetuate their confirmation biases? Over the decades I've lived, I've come to realise that your spiritual practice is a personal matter and not one we can or should impose on everyone else, and I've learnt that most by watching islamic nations. Could there be muslim brothers and sisters who are in harmony with their faith? Sure, but I don't see how this can be forced on everyone. IT has to remain a personal choice.

    Around 10:30 I think. I mean we have a University that ranked 86th in Asia and 254th in the world. That's something. And health, the government would pay money to send you outside the country for surgery.
    Some of the content in this video is based off rumors, speculations and point of view, huh. Grab whatever you can for that agenda.
    10:57 "Standard of living nowhere near that of developed country."
    Opinion:
    True, but this is mainly because our industry (apart from oil and gas) are not improving. Like you said people has been too reliant on the government. Government work is secured and pays a lot, they said, while a lot of them are neglecting their work. The Sultan has been going around for a surprise visit to see the REAL work done by those officials. He's been looking stressed nowadays. And he can't even fire them for some reason. The Bruneian mentality is to get that sweet sweet government pay check that no one is willing to work to improve other industry.
    The plan is to improve other sector for economic "stability" and not to be too reliant on the government. There's been rumors that the pharmaceutical work is to be given to private company instead of the government. Which means more jobs, competition and more improvement in the RnD.
    Another thing is that as a muslim country, Brunei has zakat (alms), paid by every muslim per year or per case to case basis. And that money has accumulated MILLIONS of dollars for the poor and needy. A mechanism purely to help the poor and needy. And the one that is holding that money is a department in the government. The department that the Sultan made a surprise visit last week and said they are not doing their work... I fucking agree!!! As a finance student, my faculty had a program to visit this poor looking houses and ask them a few questions. It baffles me that this people has not been given those zakat money. Like wtf are those officials doing. They need to go down and look for those poor people instead of sitting in their office most of the time. Sorry for the rant.

They should have stayed neutral and look at the topic on both end. Like, free health care system. This channel will say "they're trying to pacify the citizen." TLDR: Dated a girl related to the Sultan's royal family, who would be in line as a successor if the King and his Princes died.
    Guys, seriously no joke, the Sultan has a distant family in Norway. And by distant I mean that they are relatively close and share a Facebook family group - speaking relatively often, but the Norwegian family are not royal. I dated this girl a year ago, and after a few months she laid the mombshell revalation on me that she was related to Brunei's Sultan. I obviously didn't believe her at first (who would, right?), and she just pulled up her phone and showed a bunch of photos of them together. I'm pretty sure my jaw literally struck the floor for a second. Prince Mateen of Brunei has tried to marry her twice - but she declined, as ... you know, Brunei is a f*** up country and the prince reflects that. And the fact that they are technically family makes it even more twisted. The wierdest fact is that if the Sultan's family were killed, the Norwegian Christian family would be a legitimate successor to the throne. So... for the relatively short time i dated this girl, we made fun of how wierd the situation was and that she could somehow become Queen, if crisis struck the royal family.

I must tell the sultan are more spoiling us the citizen than himself at some point cause seriously,all we bruneians do are demanding and complain. But then we have sense of respect and live on what he gave and provide us. Not only that,literally bruneians can actually buy expensive cars/house at some point and can also travel around twice a year or once a year.. I am not boasting but this is a fact cause it shows that even though we don't really seem to look like living much under our sultan but seriously, we are living more than much under his rule.
    He literally went down to schools and will check any faulty and requests to get the faulty to be fixed immedietly so the students can study in a better enviroment. Free healthcare the sultan paid for us. He also checks on some ministry himself if they are doing their jobs right so his citizen are not having much problems. And he even gave pensions for the eldery.
