  • Old School Pilots, Old School Radio, Old School 1/4 Scale Bud Nosen Aeronca Champ, and Old School 4 stroke engine made for Old School Fun!
    Glenn has retired his model airplanes and decided to give them to me. I restored this one and flew it in his honor, letting him get a taste of flying it again himself too.
    I hope you all enjoy seeing it fly, the way they did back in the Old School Days. Thanks for watching and subscribing,

    "The kits were loaded with balsa wood that would overwhelm most modellers of today." I approve of that tacitly scathing assessment!

      Yes. Today's pilots are store bought and missed the great experiences of building something on their own and seeing it fly for personal satisfaction.

    What a big old sweetheart! The school where I earned my full size private ticket had a Champ (and a J3) I did all my flying and solo in both of them.

      @NightFlyyer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it was. Great fliers both. I still have a big J-3 cub, bigger than this and this was lost in a later video, when the strut failed and the wing departed company. Glen said he was okay with that, as he didn't build it. Both are now deceased. Here is a video of the crash. th-cam.com/video/gI4wOsL141U/w-d-xo.html Thanks so kindly.

    I've watched this video three or four times over the last few days. Can't get enough of the sound of that engine. Maybe I'll build a 1/4 scale Fairchild 24 and put a big 4 stroke up front:-)

    Best one yet Dave ! What memories... I'm still a stick and glue man, always will be.. This foam craze leaves me cold as a stone... Back in 81, and I can't find the pics of the build and finished plane on my computer right now, I built a Goldberg Cub.. At that point other than things like the Old Dynaflite Butterfly is was my largest project... I covered it in fabric from I believe Hobby Lobby in Tennessee and over powered it was a big OS 4 stroke... For the life of me I cant remember the size now... I flew that plane for many many years and eventually gave it to an older friend... I still remember the smile on his face when I gifted him with the old girl and he flew her for many more years before passing away... Today my largest is the Sig Rascal , um 80-82 inch can't remember off the top of my head and again powered by a big OS 4 Stroke... This may be old school but these new fellas coming up won't know the smell of a good nitro burning 4 banger and the feeling of a good long flight with a proper tune... Thumbs up buddy, wish our paths had crossed on a flying field in days gone by.. I'm 59 started out with COX control line at 6... I've got a lot of good stories and I know you have too.... The handshake and smile in the closing moments... Well that's what makes it all worth while.. Glad he got to see his bird in the air again and it tickled me when you put the transmitter back into his hands... Good Stuff

    Beautiful plane! I bought a Nosen 1/4 Champ this winter. It's going to be a tribute to my Grampy. He took me for my first plane ride in his when I was 5.
    It also has an OS 1.20, I'm considering going with a 30cc gas twin, I have no other glow engines at this point. And, I like the sounds of having a gas twin on it. 👍

    Thanks for the video, Dave, and your restoration work to an old rc bird. I'm also glad that you invited Glenn to have a chance to fly that RC gal one more time. I'm sure it put a great big smile upon his face, warmed his heart and brought back memories of his active RC days. I hope you invite him out to fly her every time you take that RC plane out for some flying fun. Thank you for what you both do for this fun rc hobby. I hope we have some of the younger rc pilots coming into this hobby that are like you two 'Great Old Timer RC Pilots'! The hobby needs more of you!

    I am doing a series on the old school Kadet my brother gave me. It was originally his father in laws. It has been stored in a basement for 15 years or so. It was covered in animal hair,fly droppings and nicotine. I found rust in the bearing of the Super Tiger,the cylinder its self is in really good shape. I ordered new bearings and plan to replace those. The piston and wristpin are in good shape. The piston liner looks good. It has all Futaba servos as well as Transmitter and receiver. Being I fly on farm land,I intend to keep it original as everything seems to function as intended. The covering on the plane is the Sig Silkspan ,not monocoat. I did pick up a package of it for any future repair jobs. I do intend to repaint the Kadet. It was painted with a Krylon paint. I did notice the leading edges of the tail the paint is rough. My intent is to reputty and smoth the finish as well as repaint it All. As much as I like brown,its a terrible color for Northern Mi. We have cloudy days and brown is not a great color. I havent decided on any colors other than mabe Red ,White and Blue. With White being the main color as opposed to the tan that it is now.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a great project. Yes for sure dark colored planes are difficult to see on cloudy days, and why I prefer to fly at night with Lights. White would be good. Yellow and Orange are the 2 most visible colors in the sky according to the experts. Anyway, I wish you great success, as that Sig Kadet has always been a great rc airplane. Thanks kindly for the comments.

    Hi dave
    Great video of a amazing Bud Nosen model!
    I have two questions for you:
    1. Are you interested in a Bud Nosen Gloster Gladiator (bi-plane) kit? I have one, and doubt I'll ever build it. It has a problem, mice got into the wood, and left me a large pile of saw dust! :o(
    Not sure of the extent of the damage but I think the majority of everything is there.
    I can't find any good info on this model...was it short lived in production?
    I don't want money...perhaps a trade for a helicopter test stand?
    2. The MQ9 Reaper, what is the motor used on yours but in a glow equivalent?
    Again, great video and I always enjoy watching yours here!

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I do not think I will be building a Gladiator, but appreciate the offer. I don't know much about it either. I made a video on how to make your own heli test stand that if you search my channel you will find. Unfortunately, my Reaper and Heli test stand were all burned up in the fire but if you go back to the video last year I made of of the reaper, you could find the electric motor size. If I was going to put nitro on it, I would use a .35 to .40 and it would fly nicely. Thanks again for the comments and support.

    • @toddy2519
      @toddy2519 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave,
      I'm truly sorry to hear you had a fire, was everyone okay, did you lose your home? House fires are terrifying!
      Thanks for the info on the Reaper and test stand. I have a couple of .46-sized electric motors and a couple of 50 and 65 amp ESC's, so I guess I'll be in good shape using one of those combinations.
      Love your videos! :o)
