  • I am sick that this happened over such a weak link in the design! See it unfold and the reason of the crash of this beautiful Aeronca Champ that was a gift. Glenn took it better than I did. Murphy's law strikes again. It has since been immortalized on my garage wall with the pieces I could salvage. Thanks for watching and I would appreciate it if you would subscribe.

      That is great. Make sure to check and since there is no carbon spar, you really need the wing struts to hold in a loop or and high g stuff. Thanks and happy flying.

    4:50 sorry for the lost of a beautiful plane. anyway that hole on the wing strut was located too close to the edge so there wasn't enough material there to provide sufficient structural integrity. whether you fly aerobatic or not. the aerodynamic force will elongate that hole on the wing strut. its only a matter of time when it will fail. in this hobby there are good days and bad days which makes it exciting. thanks for sharing the video 😀

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That hole was pre drilled and already in the strut when Glenn had it, so I never paid much attention to it. Definitely a poor design. Bud Nosen Planes were known for being good stuff, but this part was surprising, now that I look at it. I will for sure beef up my new J-3 cub, as this is part of the learning curve.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I nor Glenn built this plane, so didnt realize that those holes in that thin strut would rip out with a simple maneuver. I put that engine in a big J-3 cub (see my video) and you can believe it for sure, I checked those struts. Luckily it also has a big carbon fiber spar to keep it on too. Thanks kindly.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Neither I or Glenn built the Aeronca so didn't realize how thin the aluminum struts were. I have put that engine in my own J-3 cub to keep it alive and believe me, when I built it, I paid particular attention to the struts too. LOL. It also has a carbon fiber tube to keep the wings from folding and is a much better design. Good luck with your Cub. If you want to see my build and flight, here is the link. th-cam.com/video/xOJadUawwlk/w-d-xo.html Happy flying, Steve.

That is changing this weekend when I get my first flight lesson from our local club. We're using one of the club's foam planes and a buddy box.
      The J3 that is coming has phenolic tubes for the wing joiners. Not as strong as carbon fiber but I am sure will be better than no rigid joiner.

    It is ok to fold your wings on a carrier...but... not in mid air! WOW WHAT A SAD MOMENT, when that wing gave way. I had a wing strut on a M.E.N. PIPER CUB come completely off during a low flyby, but the wing spar center carried the wing load to a safe landing! OK N.F.,keep em flying!

    This one and many other bud nosen aeroncas and citabrias have died the same way. The nosen champ and citabria are the early days of giant scale and were great flying planes, but suffered from some slight bad design which can easily be fixed while building the plane, but with one already built it’s easily over looked.

    The real Aeronca Champs did loops all the time in airshows and such. This loop did not seem to be an extreme maneuver. It was a weak design of the strut made from weak aluminum. I bet you have alot to say about 3D helicopters too.

    Was that hardware in the kit or was it builder supplied? I doubt that even pre-flight inspection would have helped with such a defect. It's a real shame to see that happen to such a historically important plane, but planes are meant to fly. They really are useless unless we do fly them. Thanks for the video and I hope it saves some other Nosen Champs.

  • @scottfirman
    @scottfirman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would it be safe to say it might not be wize to push an older plane too hard as to flying stunts like that? As the fact it really wasnt designed to handle such stresses shows easily by the facy the wing brace pulled the bolt through. I have an older Graupner 300 Extra balsa that crashed three feet up from take off and I noticed many of the the glue joints failed simply because the glue had become brittle and cracked. I have since rwbuilt the plane and other than reskinning the engine bay,its ready to fly again. I replaced both sides of the body but as stated,all interior box frame parts had simply pulled apart at the seams. I actually scraped the brittle glue off the wood and used CA to reglue the airframe. I know that we never like to see a beautiful looking plane do that but it happends. No one was hurt and really,thats the impirtant thing. I have a Sig Kadet I am in the process of restoring also. I plan on regluing all the seams acessable. It is covered in Sig fabric,not monocoat. Thankfully they still sell it! I bought aenough for repairs and plan on buying more to actually build my own plane using that product. Reguardless of what happened or why Dave,I respect you and whatever happened,happened under the hands of a very skilled pilot. You can crash on of my planes any time. I still would like to stop by someday and visit on my way to see my Daughter in Desmoines. I would love to meet legend that is the Night Flyyer.

    How depressing to see a vintage Bud Nosen model destroyed...especially over something so minor.
    (Are ya sure ya don't want to build the Bud Nosen, Gloster Gladiator bi-plane I offered you, Dave? It has got to be a rare, vintage model deserving the love and attention of a master modeler, such as yourself)
    I've been meaning to ask you, did you ever fly or see the helicopter named, The Revolution, .40 sized? I received one as a gift for Christmas, 1978, but could never get the HB motor to run right. (Radio and receiver was the Kraft KP4A) I finally sold the whole thing (after building) to help pay for tuition at Rice Aviation A&P school (aircraft mechanics) in Houston, Texas. Graduated, and went to work for Continental Airlines in Los Angeles (KLAX)

    I was wincing as I was watching you throwing it around, treating it like an unlimited aerobatic model, lots of negative then positive G, no mechanical sympathy at all, the spin was the final straw, all the stuff before that was adding up to cause the final failure.
    This model didn’t crash because of poor design, this model crashed because of poor piloting. It was a scale model, it should have been flown like the full size is flown, not snapped and flicked around the sky and subjected to aggressive aerobatics.
