    My first deer rifle was a surplus mauser with a 30-06 barrel and a fixed 4 power Weaver. I saved my money and bought a new Weatherby Vanguard in 25-06 to hunt Venango County PA. 50+ years later a friend won a 25-06 Weatherby Vanguard in 25-06! I now have that rifle due to a trade. That is a great load. I go 120 grain Partitions in the 25-06 or 120 grain Speer Grand Slams. They work with the best of them and perform out of proportion to the caliber size. With these small calibers, it is always best to go heavy for caliber. Also, Federal really poops the bed with their velocities. Handloading these bullets is the best way to go.

    Worked exactly as advertised, and as designed. That front part comes off upon entry and does damage in whatever direction it travels and the back part continues to penetrate and do damage as it penetrates. As you mentioned, it was going pretty fast upon entry and some petals got tore off. Would like to see a larger diameter of the back half but a .30 hole will still leave lots of room for blood loss.

      @Magnum_Express ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@workct4102 actually this is one of the best big game bullets ever made. That front half slipping off, means nothing other than it dumped a ton of energy within the target, sending chunks of lead in multiple paths throughout the animals chest. The smaller frontal area of what's left of the bullet allowed it to keep on driving deep and ensuring a higher chance of a pass thru the target. A bullet that perfectly mushrooms, slows down faster, losing energy faster. Think of it like a parachute. Or like throwing a football vs throwing a beachball. Which ones goes further? The football, with its smaller frontal area, it cuts thru the air, rather than resist it. That said, I can see the concern of thinking that the bullet failed to mushroom, but im pretty confident, that it over mushroomed, but its design allowed it to keep on penetrating, when standard soft points will typically just stop soon after full expansion.

    In addendum to previous comments. This test probably has more to say about Nosler Partition bullet performance in general than it does about the .25-06 cartridge per se, since that bullet design along with other special application and performance bullets have already long proven to expand or improve the game weight capacity of any given cartridge. Even those of us that have enough gun knowledge to have a gut instinct about a cartridge, tend to forget and ultimately base it's performance in general on fairly average "deer" bullets as opposed to the premiums. If using a smaller bore by necessity or preference on the heavier animals one would be highly advised to go with the best premium bullets you can get for the job. Partition is the starting place for sure.

    Looks like classic Partition performance. Partitions provide the sort of penetration that would allow the .25-’06 to be stretched from its proper standard bullet sort of use, pronghorns and small deer, to the large deer - Cervus elaphus canadensis (elk/wapiti) or Alces alces (moose). As you noted, a longer barrel is appropriate to the .25-’06.

    Normal tapered jacketed bullets shed weight. People judge their performance by how much weight they lose. The Partition works differently. Most of the time, it loses the front half of the bullet completely. This is what creates all the shock. Then, the back half acts like a solid giving complete penetration. This is why they work so well at high and low velocities. A 180gr 30 cal Partition on Elk, goes in a 30cal hole, comes out a 30cal hole, and does massive damage in between. Because of this, I've used a 180 Partition in a 3006 for everything from hogs to Elk. They are a fabulous hunting bullet...

  • @troy9477
    @troy9477 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's a great cartridge, and that is how the Partition is designed. Down here a lot of people use it for long range varmints, probably with tipped bullets. Conventional wisdom says it is fine for deer, antelope and hogs. Lots of elk hunters use it successfully too i hear, so it must bring the goods. I would lean toward this over a 6.5 Creedmoor, but i dearly love the idea of a 6.5x55 also. So much overlap among cartridges. But it is hard to go wrong with any proper centerfire.

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Out of standard 22" barrels the creedmoor over takes the 25-06 in energy at 100 to 200 yards.
      But if you get a 1 in 8 twist barrel on the 25-06 you can get that b.c. up with the 131gr .257 bullet and really give the creedmoor a run for its money. I like the new 6.5 prc and love my 6.5x284 Norma.

  • @toddbradford4700
    @toddbradford4700 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes I would use it for hunting. In fact I have on many occasions. It's tough to judge partitions by measuring the part of one you might recover. Typically it will be just the rear section and that part will not be expanded at all. That missing front half however expanded and tore up half of hell. LOL! I used to shoot 160 gr Nosler Partitions out of a 7mm mag and that combo created more bang flop DRT kills than any other rifle/bullet combo I ever used.

    That Savage Axis probable has a 20" or 22" barrel . Pretty sure Federal test their barrels with 24" barrels to up their advertized velocities. That would explain the shortage in Ur test velocities with the Savage Axis . Plus, not all chronograhs are created equal. With that said, I'm still thinking its the Axis shorter barrel to blame for lesser velocities on Ur test. As far as penetration goes, Ur test proved plenty of penetration should the animal get up & run off. U will be able to follow blood with proper shot placement. Going thru ribs & 4 gallons of water + stopping approx 1" in wet news paper is more than enough penetration to follow blood from a 20-22" barrel from the Savage Axis. I say: good job Federal, keep up the good work.

    This bullet did exactly what it was designed to do. 40% of the bullet exploded to wreack havoc on the heart and lungs, and the other roughly 60% penatrated through "causing an exit wound for bleed out." This is still the best bullet EVER invented for hunting. From 25 yards up to around 400 yards this bullet is consistent. This bullet cartridge in a 25-06 is one of the deadlest combinations I've ever seen. I've only had my 25-06 for 6 years but the white tails I've killed with this combo have never walked 3 feet. Thank you for the video. To get the most consistent velocities should be taken from a cold barrel, your velocity check varried greatly with each shot fired
    The 25-06 is a high-performance round, so there should be a time lapse between each fired, with a light barrel as you have, perhaps, ten to fifteen minutes between each shot. Yes, I know that is a long time, but that is a very light barrel..

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't affect velocity in other calibers when I take only a few seconds between each shot. I'm going to go ahead and say, as it often has been, federal's consistency. I typically don't get wide variations with my handloads or better factory ammo

    I've never had a ,25-06. I do respect and like that cartridge. I really think it fills one whale of a cartridge niche. I'm just not so sure that includes elk, moose, or large bear. In that class of animal you essentially are hoping your .25-06 is going to deliver muscle more easily delivered by bigger calibers and heavier bullets. In that application I would consider a 130 grain .270 a much more practical step up. A lot of people wouldn't even stop there. If I was forced to say it, I'm guessing .25-06 would best be reserved for low density game averaging less than 400 pounds. Not that it can't deliver or hasn't delivered results, it's all about more consistent results. Bigger high sectional density bullets do bigger things on bigger targets under tough conditions.
