    Also, yes, Earthbound is an excellent translation of Mother 2 from Japan. The Mother series is known for being very odd, and Earthbound captures it perfectly in English.
    Also also, the reason why Final Fantasy VI was called Final Fantasy III in North America is because they wanted to prevent confusion. We got Final Fantasy I. Japan then released Final Fantasy II and III, which we did not get. Then they released Final Fantasy IV, which we did get. In order to try and prevent us from getting confused by a jump from I to IV, they called it Final Fantasy II here. Then we didn't get Final Fantasy V, and then we DID get Final Fantasy VI, and the same logic was applied. Then we got Final Fantasy VII, and they gave up.

    Supposedly the US SNES had that curved hump on top so kids couldn't set bowls of cereal on top of it. Apparently it was a big problem with the US NES.

    • @TheMGMfan
      @TheMGMfan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      jondorthebrinkinator I think it was more so kids putting drinks on there, but other than that, you’re right. I think another reason for the redesign was that they wanted it to seem less childish, even though the only thing about the Super Famicom that could be construed as childish is the multi-colored buttons on the controller.

    • @Milamberinx
      @Milamberinx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      In game consoles I've only owned Xbox 360 and the three most recent Nintendos... the urge to put cereal or a drink hasn't struck me... yet. Maybe I'll give my Switch a sandwich tomorrow.

      2 years late to this. Nintendo of America's president decided it looked like a bag of Wonder Bread. However, I don't know how our design came to be, but this was the reason for the change.

    I like our North American version of the SNES. It looks more "hi-tech". Granted, the SFC style SNES looks more like a really fun toy and in a way I'm jealous that you guys got it. But I think our version looks more serious and futuristic, sorta like the control deck on a spaceship, and I don't think it looks bad at all.
    Also, a little known fact, the Y and X buttons on the western SNES controller are concave, they're not all convex like yours. To me this gives it a slightly nicer thumbfeel.

    I find absolutely remarkable the fact that you do almost no editing in your videos, yet they still are so interesting. And that tiny amount of editing is perfect. Stuart Ashen is a demonstration of the principle that says that a good youtuber does not need bells or whistles. Just a sofa and a camera.
    Honestly, I do hope you don't get poisoned by the stuff you make yourself swallow from time to time.

    Actually, the reason "Starfox 2" didn't get released is it was very similar to the N64 version, and was scrapped. Don't remember if it looking sub-par was the reason, just heard that much. Could be right. Makes sense.

  • @BCProgramming

    Personally, I like the North American Design better, but prefer the SFC logo. NA design also has more stackable cartridges too. Mind, I'm not too attached to the pink and purple schematic of the controller, but would take it over the convex X and Y of the SFC and PAL SNES. I think the "other" console that somebody wasn't familiar with is going to look ugly for the most part.

  • @StRoRo
    @StRoRo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    One of the reasons it was shaped like that in the US, was the top reason for NES failures was liquid damage because people put their drinks on the console because it was so flat. They made the SNES it angular to make it harder to put drinks on top.

    • @DarknessViper99
      @DarknessViper99 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Funny how Nintendo said they wanted to change up the design after the NES in order to stop people from comparing its appearance to a toy yet they put goddamn lavender switches and buttons and whatnot on it.

    • @RA75AK

      StRoRo - if that were true then Nintendo would've added a cup holder to the design of the console. And it would've had a picture of Bob-omb in the bottom..

  • @IdentityCrisis1581
    @IdentityCrisis1581 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I am american and I always thought the same thing, especially after I found out what it looked like in other countries. When Snes came out, i was still old enough to know they could make the plastic shell look like what ever they want. For some reason they looked up the definition of sleek, and made the US version of the snes look the opposite of that.

  • @Highlander77
    @Highlander77 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I actually prefer the CRT filter mode. Yeah, it looks a little fuzzy at first, but the graphics on the SNES were never meant to be displayed in high-def. I think they look way too pixelated and blocky in the other modes. CRT mode is how I remember the games looking on the crap TV that I had to play my SNES on as a kid, lol.

    • @Sandwich1414
      @Sandwich1414 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Donkey Kong Country kinda looks better WITH the CRT filter because I have this personal opinion (not based on any fact or whatever) that that game was meant to be hidden with a bit of CRT fuzz. The models look a bit bad in places without it in a way that's kind of jarring.

    • @Openreality

    • @Siorse
      @Siorse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the issue with the CRT filter is that it doesn't really look like a CRT. It has the scanlines/flickering that CRTs could have but it lacks things like the shadow masks and the diffusion/halation that would often also be on CRTs. So it looks a bit more like a crt than no filter but isn't exactly right if you compared it.

    I have to agree on the American SNES design. As a kid I didn't know any better, but as an adult once I saw what Europe and Japan got I was so jealous. So much so that I bought a Super Famicom controller to use with my Retro Duo. It was surprising to find out that the X and Y buttons weren't concave on those. But it was only after playing with that controller that I realized the colors of the crystals in the secret caves in DKC3 were based on those buttons

    I managed to get my hand on one of the American ones, it's fun to play casually, but I was a Sega kid growing up, It was a gift from my mom, and I only had 3 games for it... never was allowed much time playing video games at home anyway. I did have a friend that had a SNES and I got to play it... barely, because he was one of those kids that wouldn't let ANYONE touch ANY of his stuff... got quite boring to go to his house after a while... But I'm super happy I got it anyway.

  • @ChesuMori

    The Super Nintendo's North American design was made to prevent kids from putting soda cans on it. In the eighties, it was common for kids to play video games while sitting on the floor, with the console on the floor in front of them. Since thick carpeting was also really common at the time, they would put their drinks on the only flat surface available; the console. The number one reason that the NES was sent in for repair was because a drink had been spilled on it. That's why they gave the SNES a design that you can't put a drink on.

    I had one with rounded edges and one with sharp. I liked the sharp version better. Mainly because it had an eject button. Purple buttons didn't effect game play as we never looked at them anyways. We also had indented y and x and rounded a and b, while yours are all rounded. All in all don't care the design can't compare to the awesome of the Genesis.

  • @drygnfyre
    @drygnfyre 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Lance Barr was head designer for NoA at the time, and he felt the Japanese/European Super NES design was "too soft, like a loaf of bread." He wanted a blockier, angrier design, hence why the American Super NES looks the way it does. I really don't mind either design, they are both okay, but I do wish the American style retained the colorful A/B/X/Y buttons, instead of the two-tone purple.

    Interestingly, the Japanese SFC Classic Mini drops five of the games included on the US/EU version and replaces them with others:
    US/EU Exclusive:
    - EarthBound
    - Kirby's Dream Course
    - Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
    - Super Castlevania IV
    - Super Punch-Out!!
    JPN Exclusive:
    - Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
    - Legend of the Mystical Ninja
    - Panel de Pon [re-skinned as "Tetris Attack" at least in the U.S.]
    - Super Soccer
    - Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
    It would've been nice to get all 26 games included worldwide (or drop SFII Turbo in favor of 'The New Challengers' since it has the speed options that made 'Turbo' so popular PLUS Fei Long and Cammy), but it is what it is.
    It also would've been nice to see some or all of the following on there, too:
    - Chrono Trigger
    - The Firemen
    - Harvest Moon
    - Pilotwings
    - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
    - Zombies Ate My Neighbors
    I realize licensing costs play a role in selecting the games, but surely they could've gotten more on.
    Ah well, it'll end up jailbroken like the NES Mini and you'll be able to load more games on it, anyway.

      maybe Nintendo and MS can finally come together, maybe Microsoft let's them put RARE games on the N64 mini, and Nintendo let's them release GoldenEye HD on Xbox One and maybe on Switch too as a bonus?
      microsoft and nintendo seem closer than ever before now with all the crossplay stuff, and the Xbox devision is very open to stuff like that atm it seems. so if there is any chance for a rerelease of GoldenEye, it is right now!
      Maybe make it a partnership, release it with all the Rare games, including Banjo and Perfect Dark, and in turn let Microsoft finally release that Remaster that was 90% finished apparently
