I don't get why neo geo fans aren't more outraged than Nintendo fans. Neogeo is clearly taking the piss with their fans. They overpriced cheap products for years now. That's why I'm not a neogeo fan. I bought the first wave of neogeo mini to play a few games, I knew that they were full of anti customer CEOs so I never bothered to collect for them.
That's gotta be a sprite can, there's some yellow on it. I can't help think it'd have been easier to move it and or refilm than blur the damned thing though
@@Openreality Cuz Neo Geo fans are generally a more niche group and thus tend to know a bit more and will not go for something like this. We're not stupid. Nintendo fans are people who go absolutely mental at anything whereas Neo Geo fans are mostly adults who are able to go "yeah, this isn't worth it" and then move on with their fucking life.
Here's a guess for the vertical scanlines: The emulator visual settings were designed with included options for vertically scrolling shooter games as well, which often had the built in monitor rotated 90°, so would have had vertical scanlines. The units the emulator would be used with likely wouldn't have a monitor that was mounted that way, they'd just rotate the image and not use the full screen. No clue about the 40° option... Would that have been relevant to any cabinet design, like one that used a mirror?
I had my suspicions it was something to do with that too. I suppose in theory that if you're building a custom-designed machine (which arcade machines are) there's no reason you couldn't control a CRT monitor in "portrait" orientation to scan at 90 degrees, so it was still "horizontal". Of course, you'd have to have the display chips output the display in that order as well. Whether there would be any benefit to that- let alone if it would be worth the hassle- and if anyone ever actually did it... I've no idea! If- as I suspect- at least some parts were off the shelf, they might be designed to assume horizontal scanning was in use, and fiddly to make work differently or replace(??)
@@NotATube I don't think anyone would really have cared about having the scanlines going one way or another, and components for 4:3 screens accepting signals in the normal orientation would have been plentiful and mature, can't really think of a reason to try and buck that trend for the small use case of arcade cabinets (I guess possible differences in text rendering could have been a reason, if desperate enough?). If you can use the exact same components and just change the mounting of the display, I'd probably end up with the same decision.
@@NotATube And while arcade machines are always somewhat custom, there were some standards. You might know of these, but for the benefit of anyone reading through these comments later who might not: Relevant to this discussion, Japan Amusement Machine and Marketing Association came up with the JAMMA Video Standard in 1996, so with the same cabinet you could slap in any JAMMA compatible game motherboard. Haven't looked into whether JAMMA compatible vertically scrolling games were prevalent, but say you have a few cabinets specifically for vertically scrolling shmups along with the normal ones, it would be an enticing option for the arcade manager to be able to just swap out the marquee and the board to update their game selection.
“It gets many things right but sadly for the money it just ain’t good enough” I feel like that sums up pretty much all the Neo Geo stuff you have reviewed. It’s always got decent to good emulation and an ok selection of games but there’s always one thing that ruins it and the price is always too high
bad controls on a SNK system are weird. If there is any Games company known for no-compromise hardware, it's SNK. You bought the entire arcade board for your NeoGeo from them back in the day. that's why they were so extremely expensive. To see quality like this on any SNK machine is kinda really sad
In case anyone is wondering about the blurred can, it's actually because of the UK's rules on product placement. In America there are normally sponsors where you see products in the backgrounds with their logos visible, or use to drive the plot (See the Hawaii Five-o Subway scene, which I believe got banned in the UK.), over here it's against the rules to subtly promote stuff, you must make it clear if you are being sponsored by a product, which is why when American reality shows come over to the UK, you'll see T-Shirts and Coke cups blurred out almost all the time. And with UK shows, any products seen in the background are mainly turned around so that you just see labels and stuff (Although that is becoming a bit more lax here and there, if you see a faint "P" in the corner of the opening, that means there will be some product placement in the program.) So why's Stuart blurring a Sprite Can? Because believe it or not, UK internet personalities are getting contacted by the Government for subtly promoting stuff to their audience without explicitly saying that they are paid to do so, so Staurt has taken a precaution and blurred out the Can to show that he's not doing a sponsor and that maybe he forgot to remove it
And here I thought Germany was the only country suffering from a lot of ridiculous restrictions around product placement and online advertising. Except in our case it's not the fault of the government agency that should regulate this sort of stuff, they've got some pretty clear guidelines and as long as you stick to those they won't bother you. Instead it's an organisation that claims to act on behalf of their clients (but refuses to publicly name those clients) that sends out cease and desist letters left and right to anyone who ever mentions a brand or even tags another influencer or something in their posts. And if they drag you to court and you're not exceptionally lucky you'll encounter a jury that's probably never used TH-cam or Instagram and probably flips a coin. So we commiserate with you folks.
If you've ever been to the States and seen American TV there are more adverts than any actual programs. It's pretty much unwatchable. If it plays for 25 minutes in the UK that's because in the US it has 35 minutes of advertising around it.

These are for folks that collect and the joysticks are decent the buttons are not bad but people want clicky buttons. Overall the quality is really nice and there few things that are lacking but these aren't for normal folks who just want to play. Stick to fortnight!
For that price I would aim for an actual sized cabinet and restore it. I know this is easier to handle and store, but it barely gives the arcade vibe I want. I get the same result from plugging in an arcade stick to my PC and that has good joystick and buttons.

You get most (if not all) of these SNK games for free with Amazon Gaming service (which is free, just links to your Amazon account), or atleast you could at some point earlier this year.
As someone who owns the MVSX, the buttons are definitely shite. I heard that the later versions of these machines have improved buttons though. In the end I replaced my buttons with Suzo Happs with D44x micro switches, and there are lots of YT videos explaining how to do that.
The first review I've seen that thrashes this thing for everything else then the buttons. Also, still no mentioning of the slow UI and Times New Roman font.
The reason they come with 6 or 8 buttons, is because some games use only 2 or 3 buttons, and also SNK fighting games are played in various configs. OG setup is BCD A and isn't ideal for non fighters because A button under thumb King of Fighters and Mark of the Wolves tend to be played AC BD NeoCD players like CD AB and 2/3 buttons non-fighters tend to be ABC D
So, basically, with a bit of MDF, and old LCD monitor, an old gamepad and a raspberry pi, you could have something far more versatile. There's definately not £450 worth of tech and build quality in this thing. I've seen similar looking games machines with better controlls for half the price in Smyth'sToys!
The buttons can be configured for box style and other competition configurations hence six buttons this was brought up in the RetroRGB review. As for VAT/Customs all units will ship from the German warehouse and if any are required it should be very little.
After spending like $50 on amazon earlier this year to get the old NeoGeo Mini, was it going to be worth spending 10x as much to get 10 more games. Well, we could probably already guess that answer, but thank Ashens for confirming it.
I could be wrong, but I believe the extra buttons are for people who use combination keys for actions in fighting games. So you can set up one button to press two or three other buttons at the same time.
very reminiscent of the "1-up" machines they are selling here in the states, basically LCD panels with a system on chip setup, cheap buttons, etc, only they have two games, they seemed to sell pretty quickly at first, but now seeing a lot on the fb groups being sold. Unlike that one I don't think you could add games to these, and apparently people got tired of only playing 2 games, thing is the price of these was about $400 US if you got the stand, which didn't even make it full height. as you said it's probably better to build your own.
The build quality on that thing looks... ok-ish. As long as they didn't use a bad video signal format like you said, I guess overall it's pretty good, but it doesn't scream long-term quality. The wood bare wooden boards inside all suggest a quality about one notch below where it should be. It could obviously be way, way worse, but I get the impression that if you do try to mod it, it's only going to take maybe two or three disassemblies before everything gets shitty. I do appreciate that it has a nice screen, and that they bothered to put in an emulator that actually works properly, but for how raggedy it's going to get, it feels like a $200 rather than a $450 product.
Regarding the Vertical Scanline options: Occasionally Arcade machines had their CRTs rotated on the side, especially vertical shoot'em ups to give players more "forward viewspace", though granted the advantage is minuscule on 4:3/5:4 screens like that. But it was a game-changer when those widescreen tubes came out. Trivia: There were also some arcade machines that had the screen pointing up table-style, usually 4 player games.
Something weird seems to be going on with Neo Turf Masters. The version on Switch has been updated and the name has been changed to Big Tournament Golf for some inexplicable reason.
that was the original japanese name, it even has the announcer say Big Tournament Golf on the title screen, they didn't re-record him to say neo turf masters when they came up with that title for some reason
Stuard my friend there's no need to do special modding in this game box, just stick the usb with the games you want and you can play them without any special work i believe! Except that might need a little work to somehow manage to make the adjustments to the flash drive to work with it!
Seems the reason AOF2 is absent from this thing appears to be a recent change made in some current ports: a stage has the rising sun flag in the background, which is considered really offensive to most parts of asia due to Japanese military war crimes. Generally it's not used to reflect those, but it can come off as tone deaf to some so nowadays people just do courtesy and don't put that version of the flag in their game. A few months back AOF2 from Dotemu and I believe the ACA version had the flag edited to be more generic, but the edits weren't consistent and done differently, like with Baseball stars 2. (Where for some reason, probably due to the parent company being in massive legal trouble if they don't comply, they scrubbed the team names to remove countries/Taipei) which also got edited around the same time. But those edits aren't consistent as the Dotemu version just removes ALL country names while ACA only edited Taipei. (and Hamster ONLY ever edits a game's content if they're legally forced to, they're pretty good about keeping things as original as they can, so SNK and their parent company likely mandated it.) They also removed all but one of the NG soccer games, presumably for the same reason. I'm kinda surprised that as a result those games are skipping compilations like this, where they could just simply edit them and continue to release them. (Same with Big Tournament Golf, due to Masters conflicts) Pretty darn annoying that some games in the NG library are in weird legal limbo now, and that also goes for the Visco games which Hamster couldn't rerelease since it's hard to know who owns what. This whole machine seems kinda off in general TBH since as far as I know SNK US and Japan never promoted it a single time: it seems to be the hardware maker itself under license making some think even SNK doesn't want this lame system around.

the controls are the ONLY reason to get a cabinet. without them, what's the point?
@@theghostofthomasjenkins9643 another reason is for COLLECTING, DISPLAYING and PLAYING that's the other reasons to buy them.
@@prawngravy18 Well, the controls _are_ relevant for playing the games. So if the controls are crap, you might as well build your own cabinet around an emulator. Except the primary audience for this are probably people who don't want to build their own cabinet.

I wonder why all those who are selling this type of bartops are getting cheap with the switches and joysticks.
This video actually got me interested in that Arcade stick you showed at the beginning .
It's a relief when these things turn out to be shit. Saves me money.
Well he could upgrade the joystick and buttons, but for this price they shouldn't be putting the cheapest shit they can find in it, you should be getting actual Sanwa hardware.
These are for folks that collect and the joysticks are decent the buttons are not bad but people want clicky buttons. Overall the quality is really nice and there few things that are lacking but these aren't for normal folks who just want to play. Stick to fortnight!
as soon as he said "just want you to think about that" about the buttons, I immediately knew the ones on the MVSX are going to be crap lol

For that price I would aim for an actual sized cabinet and restore it. I know this is easier to handle and store, but it barely gives the arcade vibe I want. I get the same result from plugging in an arcade stick to my PC and that has good joystick and buttons.
You're using the Bosch Ixo Vino electric screwdriver thing you reviewed years ago! That's quality continuity right there, take that Vince Gilligan.

Well obviously it's nice, but the controls are shit, and for that price, if they are buying in bulk, I'm sure Sanwa would have cut them a deal.
@@user-yv2cz8oj1k that would drive the price up for no reason, the joysticks are not bad the buttons are not bad either but people want clicky sounds. Its like a 20 dollar upgrade and 30 mins to change the buttons if bothers you that much.
The bright side of this is that the buttons in this are really replacable. All you have to do is unclip the wires, unclip the buttons, and put new ones in. That said, that's unacceptable for $400 bones.
Four hundred dollar bones? Outrageous.
Four hundred dollars bones? 🤔

You get most (if not all) of these SNK games for free with Amazon Gaming service (which is free, just links to your Amazon account), or atleast you could at some point earlier this year.
The Arcade Stick Pro can be used on PC and Android as a standalone controller. That's why it has the extra 4 buttons.

As someone who owns the MVSX, the buttons are definitely shite. I heard that the later versions of these machines have improved buttons though. In the end I replaced my buttons with Suzo Happs with D44x micro switches, and there are lots of YT videos explaining how to do that.
My favorite SNK game was that dancing one bust a move where you had the arrows you had to step on.
puzzle bobble was also really good
The first review I've seen that thrashes this thing for everything else then the buttons. Also, still no mentioning of the slow UI and Times New Roman font.
Good to see you've protected the identity of that can of sprite.
The reason they come with 6 or 8 buttons, is because some games use only 2 or 3 buttons, and also SNK fighting games are played in various configs.
OG setup is
BCD
A
and isn't ideal for non fighters because A button under thumb
King of Fighters and Mark of the Wolves tend to be played
AC
BD
NeoCD players like
CD
AB
and 2/3 buttons non-fighters tend to be
ABC

You sir, are the granddaddy of unboxing videos!
Love the LCD numbers near the 'Right Player Start'! 😁
I could be wrong, but I believe the extra buttons are for people who use combination keys for actions in fighting games. So you can set up one button to press two or three other buttons at the same time.
Wow the Ixo Vino... That's oldschool Ashens

Now I want an Ixo Vino....
If I had to guess about the extra buttons, it's probably for the Atomiswave SNK games.
Ashens providing his own handheld lighting.
**GASP!** Ashens has left the COUCH!!!
very reminiscent of the "1-up" machines they are selling here in the states, basically LCD panels with a system on chip setup, cheap buttons, etc, only they have two games, they seemed to sell pretty quickly at first, but now seeing a lot on the fb groups being sold. Unlike that one I don't think you could add games to these, and apparently people got tired of only playing 2 games, thing is the price of these was about $400 US if you got the stand, which didn't even make it full height. as you said it's probably better to build your own.
13:42 What happened there? All of reality went a bit wibbly wobbly.
He’s on his sofa with the MVSX on his knees.
the Neo Geo stick has the extra buttons because you can hook it up to a PS4 or Switch
Regarding the Vertical Scanline options:
Occasionally Arcade machines had their CRTs rotated on the side, especially vertical shoot'em ups to give players more "forward viewspace", though granted the advantage is minuscule on 4:3/5:4 screens like that. But it was a game-changer when those widescreen tubes came out.
Trivia: There were also some arcade machines that had the screen pointing up table-style, usually 4 player games.
Neo Geo games were (apparently) never rotated though; even the shooters.
The return of the Bosch screwdriver and a censored sprite can

Something weird seems to be going on with Neo Turf Masters. The version on Switch has been updated and the name has been changed to Big Tournament Golf for some inexplicable reason.

The extra buttons are for shortcuts.
Nice review, nice bit of kit too.
The IXO VINO lives!
That's right Sprite you'll get no free advertising here! Wait... DAMMIT
