There’s a Dr shortage since covid, including burnout, but they got sick & died too! I’m in WNC, and health care was bad enough before this terrible weather disaster. Been wearing my Harris Walz button on my jacket when out and several people saw it and thanked me and said they are voting for Harris Walz. Lots more Harris Walz signs than trump signs in this small town. In conversation with these people, people are really frightened about a trump win. My anxiety is off the charts because like you 9 yrs of his vileness and destruction of our rights have piereced my daily peace....praying he loses by landslide. 😂 Listen, I live in a small town in Texas where 85 percent of our county voted Trump in 2020. The Trump signs and stupid flags sadly outnumber the few Harris signs. A huge highlighted at night American Flag was on this guys property as you first enter our city, a welcoming site. He replaced it with a huge Trump flag 3 months ago. Now, when I pull into town I feel like I just arrived in 1939 Germany. I'm an older woman, divorced and single, disabled, and live alone. For safety reasons, I don't put a Harris sign in my yard and I don't bring up election talk. I have had 2 Trump supporters ramble on with Harris Hate speech and after hearing too much, I informed them I was a Harris supporter and encouraged them to end the conversation. One told me I was stupid and angrily marched away. The other began debating and I soon learned they are fed so much disinformation from unreliable sources and their not going to accept any reliable sources that will fact-check their hero. These people are as unhinged as he is and they believe what they want to believe, and I am the enemy. Sometimes, for your own welfare, it's best to keep quit.
I feel exactly the same way about signs in my yard. I would pull it right away for safety and also rip down any stickers. I've had death threats just for objecting in the newspaper's letters section to various little wars and bombings in the past. Other people have had the same reaction just from being interviewed after a trip to the relevant country that showed a different story than the Republican White House was promoting. During one of the Gulf wars, some were telling the editor that they shouldn't print anything contrary to full-throated praise for the war. It's a free country only if your neighbors allow it.
Never stay quiet. There are too many people who've had to stay quiet their whole life, you have to continue to fight their fight. When we fight we win!!

Danielle is so right regarding Medicaid and nursing homes. Married spouses should not have to divorce or give up everything to place a spouse in a nursing home.
Medicare itself isn't as protective as it seems. It only covers 80% and very limited times for nursing care. It takes a big chunk of my social security just for the part B of Medicare. Can't afford more than that and don't trust the insurance companies claiming to cover the remaining 20% for a cost of even more than part B. This is why we need a system that actually covers our real needs as we get too old to realistically get paying work and does not rely on the profiteers who have been gouging us for decades in the insurance racket. A tax-based system makes the most sense instead of expecting people to go into debt to cover premiums between jobs or when hours are reduced. The insurance vultures in my state narrowed their network for everybody getting insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchange and cancelled lower cost policies to force people onto the exchange. The policy looked very good on paper, but the local hospital and local doctors were not included. Much of even the capital city a couple of hours away was not in network. We were stuck with a Republican Governor not interested in even questioning what they did. So the good policy from the ACA exchange was reduced to a catastrophic policy. The government was guaranteeing high premiums with subsidies but not getting people covered the way they assumed it would happen. The insurers are pirates and thieves. They are running a protection racket but not even bothering to protect. I used to split my ballot but I am so angry with the Republicans about their shenanigans over the past few decades that I wouldn't vote for a Republican for dogcatcher.
When I was a kid back in the 1950s and 1960s, I thought that "secret ballot" meant never tell anybody who you voted for.... My mother didn't tell me until I was full grown that she had been quietly voting for Democrats all along. I don't recall my father ever even talking about politics, but he was extremely rarely around so who knows if he ever voted or not. But his parents were awful people in general and solidly Republican (not saying there's a connection, I've known very nice Republicans). So to avoid the wrath of her in-laws, mom kept her voting habits a deep dark secret. So yes, not letting your husband and his family know you are not voting their way was and probably still is a thing. Not worth the trouble it can cause. My maternal uncle told me that when he was young, in Scranton PA you could tell who voted for Democrats and who voted for Republicans by their religion. Catholics were Democrats, the much fewer Protestants were Republicans. My paternal grandparents were nominally Catholic, but they were the type who were Democrats when they were poorer but switched to Republican once they had money. My father dropped out of high school at 17 to join the Army in WWII (and his doofus parents signed for him) because he figured combat was safer than being around his dad.... I remember watching Trump and Melania voting side by side, maybe in 2020? If not, in 2016. Trump kept looking over the partition and at her screen. I suppose it's possible that he didn't know how to vote.... In a documentary earlier, they followed him around as he tried to vote and he acted as though he knew nothing about the process (didn't stop him from loudly complaining about it) and didn't even know which polling place he was supposed to vote in. But I always thought he was trying to see if Melania was voting for him or not! I hope Melania keeps Barron out of the grip of his dad, now that he's old enough for the old man to find him useful.
Ironically the weiner rant is the death nail in the coffin for Trump's campaign. I have overheard Republicans saying that they now believe he has Alzheimer's because of this. And they're going to vote Democrat.
Here in Canada many of us are _obsessed_ . I appreciate all of you there who have been early voting & helping out in other ways. None of us deserve the abuse from that anti-democratic, _anti-American_ party. I allocate blame based on how much *power* people have -- so Donnie gets a *BIG* slice of the blame pie first, characters like Moscow Mitch, Lindsay Graham, etc. get generous-sized pieces, and by the time you get to average supporters like Corey Comperatore (RIP) it's a _tiny_ slice of blame. Brian's comments about Missouri made me think of my hometown, Roswell, NM, which was just devastated by a historic flood last weekend. I've lived in Dallas for 4 decades, which is a big blue spot in such a red state. I used to dread going back to Roswell, particularly if it involved driving in the last decade, because I'd see very clearly that the less fortunate were all in for the Con Man, even buying those enormous banners and billboards. After my mom passed away a few years ago, I was so relieved never to have to go back to southeast NM. It's just like west Texas, but with a little different topography. Education isn't strong. After the awful flood this last weekend, of course I was looking at videos online of the storm. A couple times, I made the big mistake of looking at comments. Oh, it's pretty darn clear that it's still something else over there and they'll vote against their best interest. I'm always shocked that New Mexico is considered blue, but I guess the northern part makes up for the southern part.

Driving around my area in Ohio in 2016, I remember feeling panicked knowing 45 was going to win because of all the yard signs I was seeing. I don’t have that dreaded feeling this time. So I also worked a half-time job, and part of the year I added yard work to my jobs...3 dam jobs just to survive and keep from losing our house after my spouse died. You think Americans are lazy? My father is 88 yrs old. From the age of 19 he voted Republican. My mother always voted Democrat, so for their whole marriage (45 years) they cancelled each other out. I voted today in Illinois, Even though it's a deep blue state there was a bunch of people going in and out of that place, which gives me hope that people are taking this election seriously. I think it might quite possibly be a good thing for Harris. Just from my observation here in my town. Everybody was friendly and nice and it was a pleasant experience. (Usually it's the Harris supporters that are nice From what I've noticed)
The real McDonald's experience is having to do those tasks under continuous pressure. It's nice that he had a chance to shake the fries in the oil and be at the window filling fake orders, but he was not under any pressure because the restaurant was closed. So he still hasn't really had the experience anybody of any age has when working at a fast food joint or any restaurant. It's like the difference between driving a car around an empty parking lot and driving in rush hour traffic.

I'm a widow (69) who lives with my younger (64) disabled sister in VA. We received our absentee voting ballots, filled them out, voted for Harris/Walz, and drove our little selves to the voting office to drop them off. I feared the votes would never be counted if I put them in the mailbox. Two days ago, I started therapy because this political season has given me such intense anxiety that I was coming unglued. I never thought of myself as having anxiety before. My homework is to limit my political content to a small amount a day, so I'm late posting this comment. I actually thought it was JUST me. But I saw an article last night about how psychologists are reporting that the amount of anxiety they are seeing now in patients is incredibly prevalent. That makes me feel only a little better knowing that I'm not alone, but still sorry that others (and me) are feeling it, too. I think that what makes it worse for me is knowing that we're not just dealing with Donald anymore but the whole Project 2025 group of people. The entire thing is more organized, and they've had so much time to plan it. Even if Donald doesn't win, THEY will still be working to take over the country with their MAGA army, too.
Let dude know that not everyone in Missouri is like that. We're few and far between, but some of us hate Donald Trump. Not much will make me happier than Trump losing to Kamala Harris

I've had death threats just for objecting in the newspaper's letters section to various little wars and bombings in the past. Other people have had the same reaction just from being interviewed after a trip to the relevant country that showed a different story than the Republican White House was promoting. During one of the Gulf wars, some were telling the editor that they shouldn't print anything contrary to full-throated praise for the war.
It's a free country only if your neighbors allow it.

Danielle is so right regarding Medicaid and nursing homes. Married spouses should not have to divorce or give up everything to place a spouse in a nursing home.
Medicare itself isn't as protective as it seems. It only covers 80% and very limited times for nursing care. It takes a big chunk of my social security just for the part B of Medicare. Can't afford more than that and don't trust the insurance companies claiming to cover the remaining 20% for a cost of even more than part B.
This is why we need a system that actually covers our real needs as we get too old to realistically get paying work and does not rely on the profiteers who have been gouging us for decades in the insurance racket. A tax-based system makes the most sense instead of expecting people to go into debt to cover premiums between jobs or when hours are reduced.
The insurance vultures in my state narrowed their network for everybody getting insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchange and cancelled lower cost policies to force people onto the exchange. The policy looked very good on paper, but the local hospital and local doctors were not included. Much of even the capital city a couple of hours away was not in network. We were stuck with a Republican Governor not interested in even questioning what they did. So the good policy from the ACA exchange was reduced to a catastrophic policy. The government was guaranteeing high premiums with subsidies but not getting people covered the way they assumed it would happen. The insurers are pirates and thieves. They are running a protection racket but not even bothering to protect.
I used to split my ballot but I am so angry with the Republicans about their shenanigans over the past few decades that I wouldn't vote for a Republican for dogcatcher.

When I was a kid back in the 1950s and 1960s, I thought that "secret ballot" meant never tell anybody who you voted for.... My mother didn't tell me until I was full grown that she had been quietly voting for Democrats all along. I don't recall my father ever even talking about politics, but he was extremely rarely around so who knows if he ever voted or not. But his parents were awful people in general and solidly Republican (not saying there's a connection, I've known very nice Republicans). So to avoid the wrath of her in-laws, mom kept her voting habits a deep dark secret.
So yes, not letting your husband and his family know you are not voting their way was and probably still is a thing. Not worth the trouble it can cause.
My maternal uncle told me that when he was young, in Scranton PA you could tell who voted for Democrats and who voted for Republicans by their religion. Catholics were Democrats, the much fewer Protestants were Republicans. My paternal grandparents were nominally Catholic, but they were the type who were Democrats when they were poorer but switched to Republican once they had money. My father dropped out of high school at 17 to join the Army in WWII (and his doofus parents signed for him) because he figured combat was safer than being around his dad....
I remember watching Trump and Melania voting side by side, maybe in 2020? If not, in 2016. Trump kept looking over the partition and at her screen. I suppose it's possible that he didn't know how to vote.... In a documentary earlier, they followed him around as he tried to vote and he acted as though he knew nothing about the process (didn't stop him from loudly complaining about it) and didn't even know which polling place he was supposed to vote in. But I always thought he was trying to see if Melania was voting for him or not!

Brian's comments about Missouri made me think of my hometown, Roswell, NM, which was just devastated by a historic flood last weekend. I've lived in Dallas for 4 decades, which is a big blue spot in such a red state. I used to dread going back to Roswell, particularly if it involved driving in the last decade, because I'd see very clearly that the less fortunate were all in for the Con Man, even buying those enormous banners and billboards.
After my mom passed away a few years ago, I was so relieved never to have to go back to southeast NM. It's just like west Texas, but with a little different topography. Education isn't strong.
After the awful flood this last weekend, of course I was looking at videos online of the storm. A couple times, I made the big mistake of looking at comments. Oh, it's pretty darn clear that it's still something else over there and they'll vote against their best interest. I'm always shocked that New Mexico is considered blue, but I guess the northern part makes up for the southern part.

Driving around my area in Ohio in 2016, I remember feeling panicked knowing 45 was going to win because of all the yard signs I was seeing. I don’t have that dreaded feeling this time. Lots of Harris/Walz signs this time. Still see the other signs, but not as many & there are lots of people who have signs for down ballot republicans, but not 45. HOPE.
There are a lot of people not putting out Harris signs because of the MAGA blowback that would probably come from it. I still see trump signs though.

I worked full time at a university so I could get insurance benefits for my family, but the wages weren't enough to support us. So I also worked a half-time job, and part of the year I added yard work to my jobs...3 dam jobs just to survive and keep from losing our house after my spouse died. You think Americans are lazy? You think we haven't sacrificed our free time just to put food on the table? Damn I missed the live. Replay gang here. I voted today in Illinois, Even though it's a deep blue state there was a bunch of people going in and out of that place, which gives me hope that people are taking this election seriously. I think it might quite possibly be a good thing for Harris. Just from my observation here in my town. Everybody was friendly and nice and it was a pleasant experience. (Usually it's the Harris supporters that are nice From what I've noticed)
The real McDonald's experience is having to do those tasks under continuous pressure. It's nice that he had a chance to shake the fries in the oil and be at the window filling fake orders, but he was not under any pressure because the restaurant was closed. So he still hasn't really had the experience anybody of any age has when working at a fast food joint or any restaurant. It's like the difference between driving a car around an empty parking lot and driving in rush hour traffic.
My late father used to take the sample ballot from our local newspaper and Mark it-and give it to my mother.
When I was about eight she let me follow her into the booth.

I'm a widow (69) who lives with my younger (64) disabled sister in VA. We received our absentee voting ballots, filled them out, voted for Harris/Walz, and drove our little selves to the voting office to drop them off. I feared the votes would never be counted if I put them in the mailbox.
Two days ago, I started therapy because this political season has given me such intense anxiety that I was coming unglued. I never thought of myself as having anxiety before. My homework is to limit my political content to a small amount a day, so I'm late posting this comment. I actually thought it was JUST me. But I saw an article last night about how psychologists are reporting that the amount of anxiety they are seeing now in patients is incredibly prevalent. That makes me feel only a little better knowing that I'm not alone, but still sorry that others (and me) are feeling it, too. I think that what makes it worse for me is knowing that we're not just dealing with Donald anymore but the whole Project 2025 group of people. The entire thing is more organized, and they've had so much time to plan it. Even if Donald doesn't win, THEY will still be working to take over the country with their MAGA army, too.
