- Barony Colliery was opened in 1907 by William Baird & Company until it merged with Dalmellington Iron Company to form Bairds & Dalmellington Ltd who remained owners until it was nationalised in 1947.
Shafts No.1 and No.2 were completed and coal production started in 1912. In 1938 No.3 shaft was started, shaft No.3 would provide an increase in coal extraction and also it would increase ventilation into the mine. However due to the outbreak of world war 2 the shaft was not completed until 1950. Shaft No.3 had a depth of 2052 feet making it the deepest shaft in Scotland.
Tragically on the 8th of November 1962 4 men were killed when there was a collapse in the No.2 shaft. The four men were Henry Green, George Wade, Thomas Fyvie and John MacNeil. To add to the tragedy the bodies of the men were never recovered. Under the 'A' frame the men's names are written (14 seconds in the video). After the accident shafts No.1 and 2 were filled in. A new shaft N0.4 was sunk and mining began again 1966.
Mining at the site came to an end on 17 February 1989 when the remaining 400 miners were made redundant. Today No.3 Headgear is the only reminder of the mine.
