- Bengal Shadows, a hard-hitting documentary by two Paris-based filmmakers, Joy Banerjee and Partho Bhattacharya, brings to light the lesser-known stories of the Bengal Famine of 1943, which occurred during the Second World War and took the lives of 3-5 million people. This documentary also captures the voices of a cross-section of historians and survivors.

If bengal was united independent and sovereign it could have demanded a an explanation and apology by the British government.
Now when I see Churchill 😢 SAD. Seems like every colony of Britain was used an abused. I know United States not much better. But look at the countries that United States help after ww2 and look at the ones Britain help😮 the British ones severed to this day😢the American ones became world powers.

Unmasking the evil of Churchill. It's indeed sad that none of the history books ever made even a passing mention of this horrendous disaster. I do hope children realize the actual insidious effect of colonialism rather than just the glowing facet of railways and postal services. Bravura Live History India!
Very well made documentary indeed. However I would like to add one thing. While it is true that the Bengal Famine was forgotten because the Allied powers won WW2 and Britain left India just a few years after the famine, it is also true that Indian government avoided raking up what happened in Bengal in the 40's, which saw a series of depopulation events like the famine, partition, population exchange, flight of capital and horrific riots. Bengal as a province was completely changed within the 40s decade. No major filmmaker, with the lone exception of Satyajit Ray (Asani Sanket in 1973), made a film on the subject of the Bengal famine. Similarly, Indian politicians washed their hands off the matter and didn't intervene (most were arrested and put in jail during the Quit India Movement, Subhash Bose was aboard in this period). Indian intellectuals (who were mostly based in urban cities) ignored the famine which affected mostly rural Bengal and the poorest of the poor. This is our failure as Indians to uphold the horrors of the Bengal Famine in the post-colonial literature and nation-building narrative. Bengal, which was once a powerhouse of the freedom movement, declined from national politics with partition and independence.

I am appalled by the way churchill is describing the Indian people "300 million primitive people whose well being is in our care" as if it was justifying 3 million deaths by a man made famine by exonerating the British Raj who were directly responsible.
Describes well the atrocities British especially Winston Churchill did to Indians during the colonialism. Why these people were not tried as war criminals?. They were as brutal as Hitler. Churchill was one of the worst war criminals. The world should know the actions of this criminal.

Even after seven decades my husband would cry just talking about it. As a very young child his parents would cover his eyes when they had to walk on the streets. Profoundly tramatic.

but, I hope many more people watch this documentary in future. the unfortunate part in india is - we don't value documentaries enough. a pathaan earning 500+ cr is fine but a All that Breathes or The Elephant Whisperers, even after getting nominated for oscars goes unnoticed by majority of people. It just shows how ignorant we are for truth. believe me, we all need it but we are living in such an illusioned world of ours, that there's no space for important stuff like these & many more.
I iften wonder the same, but life is still very tough for people and they mostly use their time and money to escape their reality, watching documentaries is a luxury few can afford in India. Its improving though

Even for all his much touted bravado in WWII, Hitler reigned hell on England and also it was mostly Indians finding on behalf of Britain against Hitler . And ultimately WWII was won only through American intervention.
