We used to have a TV Cassette (2 in 1) and we would watch Disney cassette movies. Ah… nostalgia. At the start of every cassette movie, they had future movie ads. When I heard Kuzco’s voice on the movie ad, I loved it.

So a fourth wall break is when one of the characters acknowledges the audience and interacts with them.

He's like a villain but not really with one of the most amazing redemption arcs I think I've ever seen and Kuzco is the best ever, he's a sweet lil angel baby who deserves the whole world, go argue with the wall.
A character can be a villain and protagonist. I feel, personally, that this movie has 2 villains: the protagonist, Kuzco, and the antagonist, Yzma. Kuzco has a villain redemption arc, in my opinion.
While self cebtered to a 4th wall breaking degree, Kusko is not malichious or evil by nature, but by perspective. He never saw anything from other's position, cause he didnt have to, nor was raised to. Once his perspective is challanged enough time though, kusko adapts. He goes and sais sorry. He considers the concequences of his actions. he finds joy in more simple pleasures. And most of all, he sacrifices his future to save someone's life. A malichious or evil person would never do any of those. Maybe if it would further their goals.... But otherwise, no.
Sometimes making the protagonist a selfish person is risky, I mean look at Velma but I think one of the main reasons Kuzko gets positive reviews is because despite his flaws he is fun to watch and his immaturity is played for laughs, the Velma on the other hand...

It's a combination of -The story recognizes his flaws -The story uses his shittiness mostly for comedy about how people in power can be -Kuzko gets put through the wringer for his selfishness (the entire plot of the movie happens because he fired Yzma for no reason) -He grows as a person -The Emperor's New Groove is written by funny people while Velma is corporate garbage.
That's how they usually treat male characters vs. female characters. Male MC is the shittiest person on Earth but he gets humbled by a series of changing events that would completely redeem him without erasing all the bad things he had done. Female MC would start off the same but would get a pass or even get praised for for their behavior because apparently she's right to be a 💀 girlboss 💀

This movie was one of my favorites back when I was a child. I am actually surprised how original voice of Kuzco is so calm and soft. He sound like a nice older brother with some nasty sides, when in Russian his voicelines are so loud you can imagine being right in front of him while trying to punch emperors face.. He really did! He’s a bit like Ebenezer Scrooge; both start out as selfish and not caring for others, but they develop and learn to be better and kinder persons over the course of the story.
