Thank you - yes, it was a (rare!) beautiful day - I had a nice time looking around the shops with my daughter in Plymouth too.
      Take care,
      Paul

Kings, Castles and Moats! It conjures up some wonderful images in my mind. Very interesting. I really enjoyed that and what a beautiful day. Thank you Paul.👍

      Thank you Daryl.
      Yes, indeed!
We were really lucky that day - horrid storm on its way here - heavily raining now - doing my channel is all about (mostly!) dodging the worst of the weather! I don't find the winter is any worse than the summer though - that can be tricky with the heat - and the storms too.
      Cheers,
      Paul

Thanks for that video, Paul. I've been to Plymouth, but I was staying in a hotel slightly outside Plymouth using it as a base, so I didn't get to see what you saw.

Yes, a lot of people don't realise that this is there, I don't think.
It is somewhere I have visited many times.
      Take care,
      Paul

I do so enjoy your films and the descriptive research that brings them to life. BTW. Some of the iconic Marconi site buildings were Grade 2 listed and the rest demolished for residential use (flats!).

Beautiful music and harbour shots. You must have been there on one of the good days last week when we were in Devon. Glorious

Thank you Debs! Yes, it was the only day during my little stay near Looe that had sunshine.
Good to see the castle there again.

Yes, I used to visit the Plympton St. Maurice area often when I lived nearby - it is full of history.
Glad you enjoyed the video - myself and my daughter were lucky with the weather.
      Take care,

Yes, I was most fortunate with the weather that day - I spent the earlier part of the day with my daughter shopping in Plymouth, which was nice.
That New Hall place sounds really interesting.
      Take care,
      Paul

Yes, it is a fascinating part of the world.
I think this was sunny day #2 of 2025 so far in the Westcountry!
      Hope all is OK.

I really didn’t realise Plymouth was such a large conurbation- thanks for pointing out that bombed church on the virtually isolated island in the centre of a roundabout which you visited last year and for showing the harbour/ marina.
Thanks for explaining the inner workings of a castle too- it does have a commanding outlook there pre all the ‘modern’ building that’s sprung up.
Glad that you had good weather for your break! Thanks Paul!

      Hi Diana,
Yes, Plymouth is quite a large City, about 265,000 people live there - it is the second biggest City and Urban area in the region that I cover here on Westcountry Wanderings (Bristol is the biggest - well over 560,000).
A lot of Plympton is now a large suburb with sprawling estates, but Plympton St. Maurice retains a lot of charm and history, and Dartmoor is close by.
It was a lovely little break, and the weather was very kind.
      Take care,
      Paul

How very interesting Paul. Indeed a fabulous January day. Glad you've brought the sun into my home on this grey and dismal Monday. Lovely view from the Mott over the area. of Plymton. Lovely informative video Paul. Thanks for sharing. 👌🇳🇱🥝🙋‍♀👍17

Yes, I really enjoyed revisiting Plympton Castle again. It is a super location - this was the only sunny day (and so far the second sunny day of the year!) of my visit to Devon & Cornwall.
      Take care,
      Paul

Thank you Michael - yes, best weather day of the year so far.
Although not as dramatic as Totnes or Goodrich, this is still an interesting place I think. It is one I used to visit when I lived in Plymouth.
      Glad you enjoyed it.
      Take care,
      Paul

Yes, week is going well - it is quite dry still, so I will be filming again today.

Good to see a part of Plymouth that isn't on the usual tourist trail. There are also many Plymouthians that aren't aware of the Castle, or the many Palmerston defences in the city, but most know the Royal Citadel as it's so prominent on the Hoe. Very interesting to hear the history of the Castle, looking forward to the next instalment.

      Thank you Jonathan!
      Glad you enjoyed it.
Although I do cover some of the more well known places in the Westcountry on my channel, like St. Ives, Perranporth & Paignton, I do really like highlighting the much lesser well known ones - I hope to continue to do that on the channel.
I think covering one of the Palmerston Forts (either in Plymouth or S.E. Cornwall) would make a good future video next time I am in the area. Scraesdon Fort used to be accessible, but I don't think it is any more.
      Cheers,
      Paul

Yes, a very rare sunny day (been quite a dry but dull January so far) to film this one.
I used to visit it quite often when I lived in the area.
      Take care,
      Paul

Thank you Caroline - I don't think it is that well known - many visitors to The Hoe & The Barbican in the City Centre aren't aware of it.

Mornin' Paul, I really didn't know this was there a lovely castle with great views commanding the area. A hidden jem perhaps?
With those blue skies you had a great day for it!!
    All the best!!

      @westcountrywanderings  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Thank you David!
Yes, this is a bit of a hidden gem, unless you are local to the Plymouth area, I think.
They certainly knew how to choose a commanding place for their defensive positions.
Very blue and strong sun that day a few days ago.
      Take care,
      Paul

Great video on what looks a beautiful winter's day. The castle seems ideally situated to serve its defensive purpose with commanding views - which presumably before suburbanisation, also extended across the Sound. Are you planning a video on the nearby Plym Valley Line, by any chance?

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you Malcolm,
Yes, I was very fortunate with the weather here - it is one of my favourite spots in Plymouth.
When I lived in Plymouth in Mainstone, the Plym Valley Line almost backed onto the garden in Plymbridge Woods.
Like all the heritage lines, it is in its winter slumber at the moment, but it is one of the heritage lines that I have not yet covered in my region, (like the SDR and the Swanage) and one that I would like to cover this year, if possible.
      Cheers!
      Take care,
      Paul
