  • This is the Dutch Army Patrol Pack/ Day Pack Review! This is a piece of military surplus gold - it’s comfortable, tough & cheap! With a 35l - 40l carrying capacity, it’s ample enough for overnight adventures or simply to carry about for the day.

    This used to be the standard backpack of the Royal Netherlands Army. Packed the standard way it's weight was about 17 kg. Way too small to bring extra stuff and still you had to cramp in your 24 hour rationpack, extra ammunition and extra tactical equipment. The 2 clips in front are to be used to connect the heavy M90 sleepingbag to wear in front of your chest. That balanced the backpack a bit but caused cutting by the shoulderstraps. With serious weight these are not comfortable. Because it is positioned high in the back it causes backproblems because it doesn't have lumbalsupport due to it's short length. We used to drop the shoulderstraps that much so the backpack rested on the entrenchmenttool which was attached to the loadcarrying system you carry underneath the backpack and was positioned at the lowerback/ butt area. Thank the gods they changed this model to the bigger 60 liter Lowe Alpine Sting bergan. Too bad that was after I left the RNLA. For light weight daytrips it might work!

      Now this is a knowledge comment! Great insight into this bit of kit. Hopefully you can tell me whether the zip ends on my Dutch Army Tent should be in or out of the corner holes, why on earth the left holes in the corners in the first place and if you know where they sell the tents with the zip covers?!?

    • @erikvels3606
      @erikvels3606 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Cheeseandhamsandwich the zip ends are supposed to be put inside. That partially closes the gap. The gaps, yeah, who knows why they left them that way. Don't forget this model was to replace the old system with the 2 tenthalves to form the puptent, it's not meant to be used for long term. I noticed there is a version with flaps covering the zips at the entrances but I think that are modified tents, maybe a testversion. They have extra tie-off points too. Where to buy? I honestly don't know. This model of one person tent is fased out around 2005/2006 and replaced with the modular sleepsystem ( the same system the UK military uses, the Carinthia tropen+ Defence4 clone by Fecsa, in combination with the hooped bivy (Carinthia Explorer2 clone by Fecsa) ).

    Usually the main compartment is divided into two bigger and one smaller/flat compartments. Clearly the dividers in your pack had been removed.
    Nice review, thanks! :)

    • @dannyclaydenchambers5907
      @dannyclaydenchambers5907 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Normally three compartments. Also.. there is a way to extend this pack. Using the quick release clips on the arms you can add what we known as the ‘Rotota’ pack for your sleep system.. making this a viable and modular over night option.

      @@dannyclaydenchambers5907 Yes, you are right, my bad. Three compartments and a flat one.

      Was the flat compartment used as a map folder, 'administration' folder?

    Ive had the same bag for around 5 years, ive put straps connecting the front and rear lower molle to strap the sleeping bag.
    Paracord loops on the front to carry the harchet, it was tempting to use the gaps behind the side pockets but the idea of getting a hatchet to the ribs was somehow deterring.
    All round, a decent pack.
    If you find one just get it, even if you dont need it.

      There is a proper extension for this pack to hold your sleep system, known as the the Rotota pack / stuff sack

    Love this bag. I recently bought one andnit goes everywhere with me. However, internally there should be three compartments. It seems yours has had the walls taken out. Great bit of kit though

    I've got a couple of packs that are around 70-90 litres. A Dutch Stinger with side pouches, and a modded LK35 with British Army rocket pouches, but I've been looking for an optimal day/overnight pack for a while. Was gonna get another LK35 and leave it un-modded, but they're selling for £45-£50 now. Considering they were around £15 when I got mine it just seemed too much to pay.
    At the moment the Dutch Patrol Pack is £20 from Military Mart. I've just bought one. It could be the pack I'm looking for.
    Great review, cheers👍

    Had my eye on this pack for some time, must admit, mainly because I like it’s look!🤣. It is a nifty size pack though, I like the molle (at least I think it’s molle) below the lid.

    I wonder if the many separations of storage makes the efficient/practial total volume significantly smaller than stated. Also, with openings being tight, it may be harder to handle larger objects.
    It is a bit hard for me to hear if it is "can" or "cant" be removed to maximize space. It is a bit confusing as there is no dividers shown, but it seems some says the original (?) bag from KLu (the KLu M93) had dividers inside. Or was it just the foam that was said to be possible to remove?
    Ofc, one can always cut, but...
    Amazed you packed so much after all. Are you positive it is really up to 40l?? Do you include external attachments in that?

    I've bought the same camouflage version of this pack a couple of weeks ago for 35 euro, as a small guy 5.6 ft this pack is very comfortable to wear, because it's high on the back and not too big. The only thing i don't like is the 3-divider part inside the pack, it's limited my options to fill up the bag the way i want, i like one big area and fill that up with my own organizer bags. I see you removed the dividers too :-) And maybe i can modify some straps with rings at the bottom so i can put a sleeping bag or woolen blanket at the bottom. But in the end it's a great pack, money wise. I have the RoTaTo bag as well, it's clips easily at the front of the day pack straps, so you wear the RoTaTo bag in front of your body and give a good balans between your bags.
