Half term week, and for the 11th year in the last 12 we once again headed for a weeks holiday in the North Yorkshire Moors with the in-laws, staying as usual in the Blue Dolphin Caravan Park.
In 2023 the North Yorkshire Moors Railway returned to 'hop on - hop off' services with a new ticket structure of £45 for an annual pass - which allowed unlimited travel for a full year from the date of your first visit with an added bonus of children travelling free. In October 2023's half term we visted for the day during the 100 Years of the LNER with visiting A4 no.60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' (see here... ), with the added bonus of then having a free return to use during our 2024 Summer Holiday!
2024's timetable was the same as previous years, with three steam locos making two round trips each, with four of the trips continuing on to Whitby. We visited on Wednesday 29th May, which was forecasted to be the least-worst day of our week weather wise (a week in which we saw rain every day and 45mph winds at times), and luckily enough Wednesday turned out better than forecast with sun throughout much of the day and just a rain shower later in the afternoon while we waited at Goathland.
Black 5 no.44806 and 9F no.92134 were in action on the Whitby services, although neither can run between Grosmont and Whitby so Class 25 no.D7628 'Sybilla' was in action on all four Grosmont to Whitby services. Std 4 no.80136 was in charge of the internal Pickering to Grosmont set. We parked at Pickering and took a round trip to Grosmont, travelling out on the 10.55am behind 80136 to Grosmont (jumping off briefely at Levisham on the way to film 44806 pass our service), which gave us two and a half hours at Grosmont watching the trains and looking round the sheds before taking the very busy 2.40pm service from Grosmont to Pickering behind 44806. We then drove back to Blue Dolphin 'via' Goathland to watch 80136 with the Pickering bound service and 44806 with the Whitby bound train.
We had a lovely day, the railway was very busy which is great to see. Steam Locomotives working hard in glorious scenery, whats not to like! Half term was advertised as 'Whitsun' - Family fun week and there was plenty of families there enjoying the line and all the activites going on. Many thanks to all involved.

Hope you have a great time! Would love to go but its too far for us on a school weekend, even with our in-laws living in Doncaster. Maybe one day we will go. Thanks for the comment Ashley
