A Haole boy here that grew up in Makaha and Waianae High School. I love being from Makaha, bred in Makaha. The true meanings of life, roof over your families head, food on the table and your extended Ohana at the beach is the Makaha way of life every day. From Rusty coaching me in surfing, the Mel and Buffalo yelling at me when I did not surf good. To Aunty Rel putting Lawrys salt on my back because I was stung by a bunch of Portuguese Man-o-war. All the way down to Yokes second dip when Johnny Boy wanted to beef with me (I was only 15) because he didn't want a haole boy surfing there, and Russ, Sunny, and Marvin Foster took me under their protection and paddled out with me and called everyone off for me to catch a solid 10 foot hollowed out barrel. I thank you to all Makaha Ohana I have been able to experience and funny stories from the "Old" ones sitting at the picnic table under the tree.

This was awesome to see! Who did all the interviews? I'm one of the Makaha Ohana btw. I may want to connect with the filmmaker and put this in a film festival out in Waianae we having at the end of the year. Let me know please!

I learned many of my "lifelong lessons" there, on the beaches of Makaha. Daddy Snooky along with Aunty Momi and Uncle Buff and the countless other hanai aunties and uncles (and cousins) ... they taught me well! Something I have passed on to my keiki's and will soon pass on to my grandchildren, even though now I'm 8,000 miles away. I'm proud to be a Whaley and honored to have been raised with the Keaulana Ohana! Me Ke Aloha Pumehana Makaha!

My first visit to HI and we stayed at a condo in Makaha. My husband and kids are Alaska Native. We were all treated very well. We loved it, great place. We got to meet some locals - all nice. I am from Detroit so I wasn't put off by any reputation. Take people as they are, live and let live. Quayana.

When I started surfing in the 80's, Haoles were not welcome on the west side unless you were born and bread on out there. If you were dumb enough to pass Tracks, you were on your own and would probably get cracks from the Kanak's, or at least a good slap in the ear and sent back to the south side without your board. Makaha, that was a whole other story entirely out there. That's a break that's meant for Hawaiians, their families, their friends, and unless you were invited and paddled out with a Makaha local, you shouldn't even be in the parking lot, period. The Hawaiians are amazing people, with amazing grace and aloha, but with their land and hearts stolen, they can be fierce in protecting what little they have left that they can call their own and who can blame them... Leave Makaha for the Kanaka Maole, there are plenty other spots that you can paddle out... Aloha!!
