    This is for people who are just starting to check and recharge old lithium cells (this is an old video).
    I STRONGLY RECOMMEND GETTING AND USING THE THERMAL SENSOR for the B6 balancer/charger (or whatever unit you're going to use for this purpose). This can help prevent the "they can get hot and uh explode and cause issues" part of the testing and rejuvenation procedure. You can use velcro strip to affix the sensor to a cell you're charging and it will sound an alarm and stop charging at a temperature you select ahead of time. For example, if you set it for 150F then it will shut things down when the battery surface reaches about 150F. This will help prevent outgassing/venting, thermal runaway, and fires and "uh exploding". The sensor costs anywhere from about US$2.40 to US$6 and may ship for free depending on different factors. That is really CHEAP INSURANCE and well worth the few bucks it costs.

    Please note that when he refers to four digit numbers and says "Amps", the correct term is "milli Ampere hours" abbreviated mAh. This is the cell capacity.

  • @exgenica

    It's also a good idea to try to use cells with internal cell resistances that are close as possible. E.G. don't pair a cell with 63mohm internal resistance with a cell that has 300mohm internal resistance. The lower the internal resistance the better.

    After fully charge the 18650 battery you have to leave it about 10 days to be sure they don't lose voltage....
    And after that you discharge it to make capacity..

    • @guily6669
      @guily6669 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I agree waiting a bit of time to actually test them, I have a few 18650 that seem normal until we wait a few time and see that they are kaput, they keep self discharging like nuts so it's a battery to be charged and used right away only since after just 2 days it already lost quite a bit of voltage which makes it a very terrible energy storage source...

    • @exgenica
      @exgenica 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      One of the first tests to run is the cell's internal resistance. You can do that immediately and it will tell you a lot about the health of the cell. You want cells with as low internal resistance as possible. Also see videos/blogs about "matching lithium cells" or "matching lithium batteries" and similar.

    Well yeah, that's sort of the way to do it... You should however probably leave them sitting for a couple of days and measure the voltage to see if they self discharge, since a battery that is empty after a week without you using it isn't necessarily particularly useful, not to mention Li-ion batteries can get quite dangerous in many situations including when they are internally shorted obviously.

    But, you confused me towards the last stages of your explanation.
    Your procedure was ..
    1) Charge the Battery to 4.2V
    2) Discharge the battery to 3.0V
    3) Charge the battery back to 4.2 and determine the final reading of Battery amps.
    This was what i came to understand.
    Am I right?

      the charger displays the amount of amp hours it put into and takes out of the battery. so if you charge it the whole way and then discharge it to a safe low and is says it discharged 1000mah and then you charge it back up and it puts roughly 1000 back in then you have a 1000mah battery. it is not 100% accurate but it should get you close to it. now that being said there are chargers out there for $20 that automatically test the 18650 battery and tells you what the amp hours are without you having to do anything.

    I see that your charger displays 3.6v at Liio charging mode but I think that that's wrong :P
    At my original SkyRC iMax b6ac (second gen) charger I set up the LiPo charging mode and with this charging mode I can charge my Lithium Ion cells to 4,2v.
    Until now I never got any problem with my harvested 18650 batteries
    Only the discharge process was done on the proper mode since I didn't want to turn any of the 18650's into some small flying rockets : P
    Btw. You have there a clone of the b6. The original iMax/SkyRC chargers doesn't have any EC or FC labels and they never would have this trash can since this product doesn't contain any batteries inside

    • @chrissybabe8568
      @chrissybabe8568 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have made a mistake with your charging. LiPo and Lithium Ion ARE NOT the same. LiIo cells are 3.6v and LiPo are 3.7v. You should not use the functions for one of these to charge the other as they have different end voltages at both ends. You must use what is written on the battery to decide what cells you have. If you think the voltage is incorrect (because dishonest people sometimes resleeve the battery and they may have made a mistake) there are subtle ways of deciding which is which.

    I deeply tested this charger with a 18650 and it does not perform very well:
    At 0.3-0.5A charge rate it can only charge up to 1100Mah (it's an older battery), I verified backward using discharge method too.
    I have a simple LiOn charger TP4056 module and the same battery it can charge up to 1500Mah. Again, I verified it by discharge.
    I measured everything twice.

  • @ademline2010
    @ademline2010 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    the capacity of the battery you last measured was 2555. You have typed 1676 on the paper. which?

    • @avid0g
      @avid0g 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1676 mAh vs 2555 mAh from the same old cell is an indication that the capacity improved after full cycle charge/discharge twice. This happens because the cell was discharged too far in the laptop battery and left in an excessively discharged state for a long time.
      The slow charge and discharge (twice) improved the fractal pattern of molecules on the plates. When cells are excessively low in voltage, it is best to charge at unusually low currents to improve the cell capacity.

    I have several SLA 12 volt batteries of varies current ratings. I want to sort out good from bad. What would be the procedure to confirm the current capabilities using a imax B6. I just picked up a B6 mini. These a are Lead Acid 12 volt batteries used in Computer UPS back ups. The discharge current can't be set any higher than .5 amps due to the 5 watt max power rating of the imax.
    At lower voltage batteries I can get more current but higher the voltage the less discharge current is available P=IxE 5w = I x 12 volt 5/12= max discharge current. Is the method you used exactly the same for 12 volt SLA batteries?

    i'd charge it at 100mA 0.1A not 0.5A thats way too much for charging a completely flat dead LI ION cell
    and then discharge to 3.3v then charge up to 3.6v but not 4.2v and repeat that a few times before charging all the way up to 4.2v
    then see if it stays close to 4.2v for a day. if it does then you revived the cell successfully.
    if it gets hot, blows up or the voltage just shoots up with no charge going in. then its junk get rid of it.

      I know this is old video/comment but to answer...
      I just setup one of the B6 memory allocations to set up my own parameters. That way I control the upper voltage, the min voltage, charging and discharging currents, etc. It also lets me compensate for inaccurate voltage readings by the B6. For example, to charge a Li-ion to actual 4.20V I set a memory slot to charge to 4.23V. I know it's not a lot, but it lets me also compensate for new version li-ion/LiPo cell parameters like discharging to 2.7V instead of 3.1V to which the B6AC V2 defaults.

    • @avid0g
      @avid0g 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jose, nobody replied to you for a _year!_
      series solution: Put several cells in series, but connect a _cell balancer_ to the cell/battery holder. Use a charger or dc/dc converter with both current limiting and voltage regulation. Set the charging voltage to [number_of_cells] * 4.1 Volts. Set the current limit to 0.5 Amps (or 500 mA). Make sure the balancer can handle the charging current that you set!
      You may also connect many cells in parallel, however, the current may not flow through all cells equally which will put more thermal load on some. One purpose of testing the cells is to determine this property!
      Also, it is very dangerous to put cells in parallel if their voltages are different. Very High currents may occur, causing some cells to charge far faster than their capacity. You may use some resistor or light bulb to limit current while adding another cell (in parallel) to the battery pack, but be sure to measure the initial current, and insure that the current level is safe.

    Can someone explain why the displayed capacity is so far off from what you get by multiplying current by the discharge time? At 3:41 the results of the discharge shows that the capacity is 1676 mAh and the discharge time is 335 min. Shouldn't the capacity be 335/60*500=2792 mAh (discharge current was set at 0.5 A) ? Or does the charger use some pulse mode of discharging so the discharge current is actually lower? Or does the charger recalculates the capacity to the rated voltage of 3.7V?

      @smuglor 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      THX for writing down the question. I am very interested in the answer, too!

    • @eskisful

      You should look at discharge curves. When cell hits 3.0v the current starts slowly decreasing. Because of that your calculated capacity is wrong

    This charger is not much good for best measure to nowaday Li-ions since their capacity nowadays according to the datasheet discharges to a way lower voltage and charge to 4.2 Instead of 4.1 unless you use LIPO setting which charge to 4.2v but the discharge rate doesn't go as low as the datasheet of most current LI-on.
    Though if we really want max cycles out of LI-Ion the IMax is the right charger since the more voltage they are charged and the lower voltage they are discharged the lower will be their life cycles...
    Though I heard there is a CFW for this IMAX but I think we need to solder a new connector on it...

    • @exgenica
      @exgenica 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is an old video/comment but to answer...
      There is a "System" setting in the B6 that let's you turn balancing on or off as desired. It comes in very handy when you're charging 2s1p packs that don't include a balance output. Of course, over time...charging mismatched cells without balancing can lead to fires or cell damage (that didn't result in a fire).

    • @exgenica
      @exgenica 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also...keep in mind that the B6 manual says NOT to use the B6 to charge battery packs that have internal protection circuits...or at least my B6AC V2 stipulates that limitation...and some of the cells or packs you run into may have protection circuitry.
