Roger!! Thank God for you. I was trying to figure this out on my own and realized...wait, I know he has a video on this. BAM, here it is. Me & my daughter are going for it this weekend. Wish us luck ;) We'll keep this video open while we work!

I did this to one of my tubs last month and now another tub needs replaced. Great call on the puller tool. I purchased it separately and that made it very easy to remove. Great video!

Mr. Wakefield this is excellent video. I have replaced 2 of these in my house. I like this video because before putting everything back together. You installed the cartridge and checked for leaks. Before installing the cartridge you used your finger to feel around inside the housing. At the end you caulked everything. Great video. The next time I have to replace mine I will follow all the steps outlined in this video.

Just picked up the Univeral cartridge tool and the cartridge from home depot and it helped get that old sucker out easily! Man it helped so much

Also noticed that the Moen posi temp tub and shower trim was missing the temperature limit stop. The good part about having a Moen product is that they typically will send their parts to directly to the customer typically with no charge unless it's for shipping

I didn't know that can be done.
I had a guy replace the whole unit, not knowing all I needed was to replace the cartridge.
He made a mess and the hot and cold water would jump back and forth. We finally got it replaced 7 years later when we got a jacuzzi put in. Now everything is fine.
    Thanks.

My first 10yrs of plumbing never invested in a moen cartridge puller, but that 1 time the center comes out and the rest stays in, that's worth every bit of $20!

I replace an average of four Moen 1222 cartridges a month, the only time I have ever had a broken cartridge, was one that a customer had broken trying to remove. People do not know how to prep the cartridge in order to use the puller correctly. And neither do you. Which makes me happy.

I've got two of these in my house (built in 1964; SoCal) and I change my Moen 1200 cartridges (or Danco equiv) every 10-15 years.
I thought it was only necessary to change the outer O-rings, in decades past...and that resulted in mysterious, slow water leaks into the wall!

Love it. Have an old Moen in my house just seen this, trying to figure out if we needed pins or a special tool. Glad I was right but research is better, very informative. One thing I notice is Moen replacement kits have 2 types of pin from what I've been shown how do I know I have the right one?

I had to change a stuck shower cartridge once. I ended up using a slide hammer which worked great and didn't mess anything up. The new cartridge came with a plastic removal tool which broke when I tried to use it and the store I got it from was out of stock on the metal tool so I had to improvise.

Man when those positemp carthridges when they are so built up with minerals they are a pain in the ass to pull out even with that special tool, when they are super stuck i have the pin out while me pulling i tell one of the guys to turn the water on while the carthridge is off so it creates extra pressure and it really helps.

aaahh yes... the good ole 1222 cartridge. there's nothing like one breaking as you pull it out. I've become a pro with the chisel and a pair of needle nose. still rather use the 1222's over anything else though.

I had a client whose shower handle was leaking. She also has way home warranty service which sent over people that tried to tell her she needed to remodel her entire bathroom in order to fix the leak. He said they couldn't remove the threaded nut in order to pull the cartridge. I got there and all it took was a small pair of pliers. It only took me 20 minutes to fix it most of which time was spent getting the part.

Some Moen tub/shower valves have hot/cold integral shut offs, once pulling the existing trim plate, they are left/right side within valve itself. Fixture isolation valves, designated towards tub/shower valve only. If still functional, don't have to shut meter off, and-or existing water service valve, effecting entire property. Customers still have full water within all other fixtures, not in-convienenced. Mostly within commercial, but approved within residential applications. Example within difficult, time consuming existing cartridge removal. Customer woman for example might have important meeting to attend, hopefull 30-minute, through 1-hour cartridge removal/reset new cartridge process, transitions into 2-4 hours process, doesn't effect her daily life for example. Unless only 1-bathroom, can use other bathroom, or bathrooms within temporary example.

I replaced my cartridge successfully but when you turn from cold to hot, there is a noise it makes. This noise did not happen with the old cartridge. Is the new cartridge a defect?

My house is 28 years old. I have done this several times. Now, after I turn the bath on full, the handle goes in gradually by itself and decreases the flow. Why ? Also, after 28 years of age on the house, does the valve in the wall need to be replaced ? ( not good )

I had to fight with the moen cartridge and it was not fun. The hard water make it so stuck that the moen tool they give you broke while rotating it. Not a fun day and a puller would have made it a breeze.
