😵 How I brought a “dead” brine shrimp back to life.
Every couple months I buy some live brine shrimp to feed my fish but this month I noticed something interesting about some of them.
A handful of them have large egg pouches (meaning they’re pregnant) near the end of their body and I would feed them to my fish without much thought.
As I was preparing the B.S. to be frozen, I accidentally spilled them but this made me wonder: would the babies still hatch even if their mom dried up?
I had to find out so I left momma BS out to dry for ~2 months and then added her into some warm, aerated salt water. I didn’t see any hatchlings for the first few days, but I think that’s because it was too small to notice but after 4 days I finally found one!
In the wild, brine shrimp have evolved to survive in evaporated salt ponds. Yes, the mothers die but their eggs remain in a “yet to be alive” dormant state until the right conditions are met (correct temperature + enough water).
This explains why we’re able to freeze B.S. eggs and conveniently hatch them whenever we want ☻

@@benjay3031 Probably not. With open space and no bowl containing the water. For one thing water floating sround in zero-g would probably just break apart. The fish would probably swim or jump out of the water thinking the water was limitless. Nothing stopped my brother’s fishes from jumping out of their little plastic containers, pretty sure nothing will stop a fish from swimming out of a water bubble in zero-g open space.

She didn’t revive a dead shrimp though. The eggs are biologically made to dry out, and then hatch when exposed to water. This is basically how tons of brine shrimp farmers dry out their eggs to sell for people to hatch at home.
It was NEVER a DEAD shrimp in the first place, BRUH

@@AiyetoroFeligrus Supposedly they've been bred to live longer and be hardier overall. They are their own separate variety of brine shrimp called nyos( new York ocean science) but this breed has never been officially recognized as it's own breed. It's actually pretty fascinating and I recommend you look into the history and such of sea monkeys. But yeah they are literally just brine shrimp at the end of the day lol.

I prefer to keep the brine shrimp as pets but I understand that the fishies need to eat too. :3 Also apparently dried brine shrimp eggs can last a long time and still be viable. Its pretty fascinating.

Brine shrimp are so cool. Not only can their eggs last for decades, they can also hatch in such a wide verity of tempatures.
And now we learn they can stay in their mothers womb for decades and still be able to hatch

i’m so glad your back! i missed watching your videos so much! can you give us some advice on starting a guppy tank?
I also started a guppy tank after watching her videos this week, the hobby is very good.
Make sure you get as large of a tank as you can in the space you have. I have a 25 gal, and 2 20 gal aquaclear filters, one on each end of the tank. I have about 5 live plants of different types. Can't remember the names right now. Gravel, a water heater. I should buy a bubbler but the 2 filters seem to oxygenate the water pretty well. I would also buy ph drops, stress drops, some fungicide and antiparasite (just in case you need them so you have them on hand). A water syphon too, makes for easy water changes, a net, extra filter changes and carbon...and make sure you look up how to properly cycle your aquarium to establish a microbiome before placing in the fish. That has to go for a good week at least without the fish and you can also buy products with the microbiome in them to help speed up the process. I also have lots of hiding spots for my guys. If you want tankmates, khuli loaches are super cute, don't get very big, have a small bioload, and are very easy to take care of. Guppies only live for a few years, but khuli loaches can live for 10!!!
