☠️ What fish keeping mistakes have you made?
I’ve made my fair share of mistakes in this hobby - overfeeding, infrequent water changes, and not sizing tanks appropriately for fish. But I always grow and don’t repeat the same mistakes.
Unfortunately online, fish are frequently being abused (hopefully not purposely for views). I’ve seen people pour their fish down drains, over stock the tanks full of random non-compatible species, and flushing live fish when they can no longer care for them.
Hopefully one day all the fish get the lives they deserve 🥲

For anyone wondering what she meant by her fish drowned, Fish can drown (better word is suffocate) if there is not enough dissolved oxygen in the water. Their gills take in oxygen from the water which helps them breathe, im pretty sure the reason why they can’t use gills on land is because most fish have fragile gills and they can’t stay open without water. But anyways yes fish can drown.

    • @Leah-kims
      @Leah-kims ปีที่แล้ว +386

@@utkarshjaiswal7505 if your talking about how i said fish can suffocate out of water it’s basically something to do with the fact that their gills can’t stay open by themselves, they need to be in the water. I wasn’t sure why but apparently it’s because gills can only bring in oxygen when moist, Out of water a fish's gills dry out, and then the fish asphyxiates because it can’t breathe. There’s a lot of reasons behind why that happens but that’s the short answer.

My fish PURPOSELY went through the tubes during water changes into the bucket. We would put them back in and they would do it again and again. They LOVED it. Eventually we got one to do water changes with a cover they couldn't get through, and they decided to jump OUT OF THE TANK into the bucket. They only jump out when they see the bucket.
For context my fish are all goldfish
Edit: you guys wanna hear more about my fish?
Once apon a time big fish (Phil) dies. Hes dead. He's been dead for hours when we got home. They took his floating, lifeless body out of the tank. When my dad said, "he's dead" the fish twitched. This lead my brother to put him in a bowl of safe tap water and blow air over his gills for an 45 minutes he gets back to life. The fish was dead for about 4 hours and came back. He still obsesses with water changes, hides in all his favorite places in the tank, ect. My man is a zombie.
Due to this he has had a recent obsession with TRYING to die. He wants to go back to whatever afterlife he saw. He jumps out of the tank daily. He is big enough to jump, hit the cover off the tank, and then jump out. He couldn't do it at more of a convenient time. He jumps, we get home from somewhere, and put him back in.
There have been several times where if he was a couple inches away he would have gotten stepped on without us noticing.
Phil (the zombie fish) is now huge and has lived for 11 years. Like I mentioned, he's huge and is 18 inches tip to tail.
He still tries his hardest to die, but I'm convinced he has plot armor at this point.

Ok so pretty experienced fish keeper, I’m an aquarist and I’ve been keeping bettas for like 4 years now with heavily planted tanks. My worst fish death was because there was a power surge in my house and it fried my heater and it freakin electrocuted the water 😭. I got a pretty good shock when I stuck my hand in to see what was wrong with my betta and shrimp. Super heartbreaking because he was a rescue betta of 2 years and he was doing really good 😢

    • @Sham_Knubs
      @Sham_Knubs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@Jakes5.7 tons of experience with guppies, going to warn you tho that as soon as you get males and females together you’re going to have babies. Throw a bunch of plants in the tank maybe some frog bit and Java for the fry to hide and and you’ll have like 40 babies to start out with. You can get a bunch of female’s together in a tank with no problems but I wouldn’t put all males together because they can get nippy. Rule of thumb is 1 male per 2-3 females. If you’re having problems it might also be a genetics thing. Petco guppies sometimes are just unhealthy, try a place that specializes in fish and aquariums they typically have healthier fish, but you can get lucky at chain stores. I have all my guppies with a betta because she’s not aggressive at all and the guppies like similar water parameters, I have my tank around 77 F. I would recommend getting some mixed colors if you want cool babies but in my opinion the ones with the long tails tend to have more fin rot issues and or fin damage. If you don’t want a billion babies but you want a cool schooling fish I also recommend ember tetras, or tetras in general. They breed less but are so cute and fun to watch. For food with the guppies I honestly use flakes because I have so many now in my 10 gallon, but you can totally use frozen or freeze dried foods if you like. Honestly if you have plants in the tank and a good filter and heater they’ll thrive. I have like 1 failed attempt with terrible genetics but now I have a billion guppies lmao. Also you might be able to find pregnant guppies in stores, which is a good way to jump start. If you have more questions let me know, good luck!!

I had 50-60 tiny fishes (all around 3 weeks old) a long while back. Their mothers died when my electricity went out during a bad storm around last May. I used to have a small place for my new mothers and that's where the electricity went out. Thankfully, I plugged the tank with the babies into a different, mobile, outlet that had already been charged. This all happened many months back so please keep that in mind. My sister had also died in a school shooting a week before the mother died. We were going to go to her funeral which would be held in a New York/New Jersey area as a family tradition. This would take a month. My mom had called a close friend to take care of the fish and all of the other family pets since we had to leave them. I don't know what happened but when we got home, all of the fish were dead and the other pets were GONE. It was horrible and we had to call the police. The woman we had asked to take care of them was pleading not guilty during a court case against her. When the other pets were found at her house, she kept saying "They tried to alert her of the dead fish." which made no sense because she was supposed to take care of the fish in addition to all of the other animals. We were very mad and really scarred from my sister's passing. We pressed charges and she ended up pleading guilty. She never told us what actually happened, so I assume she just didn't take care of them, but that might not be the case. I haven't gotten fish since then and I now enjoy my life with my two cats and dogs. All of them (Luminous and Kenma are the cats and Katsu is the dog, he's a Pomeranian and anyone who gets it I will love forever.) had been taken by the lady. We now live contently and choose not to think of what happened.

When I was little (around 8-10) I had a blue beta fish named Cosmo. I loved that fish but it was before I knew all the things about fish keeping that I know now, so the tank was pretty bad… however, what killed him was when my sister left her tank of guppies at our house to watch while she went on a trip for work. When she took her guppies back she also took Cosmo’s fish food.
For some reason, she wouldn’t give it back but kept saying that she would so we shouldn’t buy more. She told us that, in the meantime, we could feed Cosmo breadcrumbs and it would be just as good.
It wasn’t. He was dead within a week.

I had a fish tank as a kid and like I cleaned it/changed the water fairly regularly but I was also a kid and not perfect with it so sometimes my mom would get mad that it looked dirty (as the tank was located in the kitchen) and she’d do a water change herself. She’s got crackhead energy when doing cleaning though and she was just trying to do it as fast as possible and wasn’t paying attention. I walked into the kitchen to witness this when she was just finishing up. She’d removed all but maybe 3-4in of water, and I quickly realized that almost a third of my fish were missing. I had to tell her like 5 times that there were definitely missing fish (she kept insisting there was no chance she accidentally sucked up even one fish) until she finally looked down the drain and saw multiple of them in the garbage disposal. Luckily they were still alive and she was able to stick her hand down there and scoop them out, but holy shit was that traumatic for me. OCD intrusive thoughts do not pair well with garbage disposals and I was so incredibly tense and felt like I was gonna vomit throughout the whole process. Somehow all the fish survived, but I think we all left with some trauma from it😭

    Btw Dora is a corydora
Gummy is a long bristle nosed catfish
And the fish I had in the tank is Orandas (I had 3 of them)
My catfish that I named Dora died. We had got a new tank, I would say maybe a meter long I'm not entirely sure but its around a meter long. So I had 2 catfish dora and gummy (gummy is still alive) so when we got a new heater, filter, real and fake plants, and other stuff we needed after we set that up and it was ready to put the catfish in, we put gummy and dora in and everything was fine dora was so happy Dora was jumping in excitment(well not really jumping but thats how I like to word it) Dora was exploring all the time in that tank. So after maybe around a week dora started to be less active so we kept a close eye on Dora (and when I say we I mean me and my parents) and one day I found Dora on Dora's side looking like Dora was dead. Turns out Dora wasn't dead but was unwell so my parents are friends with a fish expert he said that type of catfish need and least 2 of the same kind we didn't know that, we thought to turn the temperature up a little cause we also found out that the temperature needs to be higher (it was lower cause we had fish in there at the time) and also my fish could basically live quite a variety of temperatures (thats how I would word it), so the day after we did all of that to help Dora (we didn't buy more catfish though) I went to my grandmas cause it was her bday. When I came back Dora was dead.
I feel bad cause I did research and it said nothing abt corydoras needing at least 2 more in the tank of their own kind. But at least we know for next time if we ever get another corydora.
And I now have 2 long Bristle nosed catfish (one is a boy and one is a girl) and I have 3 orandas but idk the genders of them probably cause the orandas I have are young.

I unfortunately ended up losing a fish because I was too depressed to maintain the aquarium. I was also unable to maintain myself either, and I haven't had another fish since, as I know I'm not ready mentally for the regular care they need. I felt really bad about it because I found out the day before Thanksgiving when we were cleaning up to have company over. I took down the whole tank and cleaned it all up so they wouldn't see the shameful state it had become. I know I'll never make the same mistake again, and I've been much more careful about what kind of responsibilities I take on and have to maintain.

This is a bit longer story. Just a warning.
My angelfish died like a year ago by drowning as well. I was on my way to work and mom was home with my, then about 2yo brother who loved watching my fish.
The angelfish only had one placo in his tank and before someone tries to educate me or hate that angelfish need to be at least in a pair and how he was lonely and stuff, he had to be alone in the tank. He got to us bc he was literally eating fish in his tank in the previous home, including other angelfish. So he had to be alone. Only the placo was with him bc he was bigger than him and after the fish tried attacking it a few times, he figured it's useless and left him alone.
My brother loved feeding him and back then, mom just turned around for a few seconds and my brother poured the entirety of his bag of feed into the water. Mom took out as much as she could with the net, but had to leave and didn't think the rest would make such a problem.
When we came home, the tank was completely brick red from the feed and his oxygen stone got plugged and dirty so it wasn't working and the angelfish drowned.
It took us like 2 weeks to get the tank completely clean and the water being clear. Whenever we cleaned it, the water would be cloudy and even letting it set wasn't working.
Now I have 2 axolotls, I have learned to always watch my brother when he's wondering around the tank and they are thriving.🥰

    I remember when I was 9,
I had three fish, we had the same breed of them before, and they died in the first three months, even though we made sure everything was perfect in their tank for them. Anyways, when I got the new fish, we moved house into a larger, spacious house. The only bad thing is that we moved in with my mum's new partner, and he had a cat. We made sure these fish would stay healthy and we would protect them. We had a lid to make sure the cat couldn't eat them, but the cat was allergic anyways, so we had to be extra cautious. We managed to keep them alive for about 2 years, before one passed. We buried her. We had two others left, they were called "Sparkle", my mum named her, because she was so pretty, and when the sun shone through the window on her, she literally looked like she was sparkly. The other one was called "Orange attack" I named this one (bare in mind I was 9) because my first fish was called "Black Attack" and they looked so similar (they were both orange and black). Sparkle and Orange attack managed to live another year, until Sparkle passed and we buried her next to the other dead fish. Anyways, the next few months, which was lockdown 1, I made sure Orange Attack was OK. And he was until one day he wasn't there. We thought the cat ate him, but the lid was on how we left it and the cat showed no allergies. It's still a mystery and I miss him a lot.
Rest in peace, Sparkle, Orange Attack and (I dont remember the other ones name)

I wasn't in charge of taking care of them so it was his careless mistake to get all different types of fish and put them in the same tank but he was very young at the time so he had no idea that would happen. I STILL don’t know what happened, but we once had an aquarium with some small neons, a couples of those fish that live on the ground, and then two bigger, really pretty ones with bright orange fins, named Oscar and Emma. The two had babies several times, though sadly we noticed too late when they already got eaten by other fish. But the big ones were thriving, until one day, Oscar just disappeared. We never found his skeleton and the other fish were too small to have attacked and/or eaten him. In turn, Emma got super depressed and only ever hid in a caves, turned very pale and rarely ate anymore. The other fish were fine, and she wasn’t sick either. We bought another fish like Oscar to keep her company, but it was only a little while later that Emma died as well. I don’t remember what happened to the one that was leftover, I believe he made it for quite a while longer, but the story of Oscar and Emma, our first fish, one of which disappeared and the other who died of her broken heart, I will never forget

We actually have a pond and a tank. The pond is outside so weather is really uncontrollable. The rain and wind knocked the miniature waterfall off course and water started pouring out of the pond. We were only able to save a few. I was absolutely wrecked because these fish were around for seven years so they're pretty big.
The ones we keep in the pond were goldfish, koi fish, and Mino. Most of them suffocated.

I named him Meggy, short for megalodon because it was my favorite prehistoric creature at the time. (He did this weird little dance thing when he knew it was time to be fed or talked to, at least that's what 10 year old me called it) Needless to say, with the right care, he lived 3 years- and probably would've lived to his full 5 if I hadn't failed to notice his ich :( I just didn't see it on him when he was alive, then when I took him out I saw the little dots near his gills. Pay close attention for details like that, because I'm still so upset with myself!

so I had a betta for around 3 years. in his last month, I was very stressed out and was unable to get myself to clean his tank. he went about an extra week before I was going to clean it when I had time to destress, but I found him floating one night. I was very unmotivated and depressed, and I thought it was my fault for not cleaning the tank. but that guy lived for 3 years with me, and my stepdad told me he lasted a long time. I kept him in a 5.5 gal tank with a heater and filter and he was fed good. I was sad but I realized that he was alive a long time and fish don’t usually last long. I’ve decided I’m going to wait to get another fish until I know that I can absolutely keep up with the cleaning routine I had.
(yes, I cleaned the tank once a month. it was fine and I would have to occasionally do partial cleans because I had surgery, but he was fine thru that. decided to do a deep clean once I got better lol)

Some fish are more attached to siphons than others. For example when I siphon my tanks, my Corydoras will swim away from the siphon but Bettas and Danios may intentionally swim toward it in curiosity.
Also if you have a heavily plants tank, you can avoid drowning/suffocation altogether because plants release oxygen into your water column.
And if you have your aquarium set as a Walstad tank, you can avoid the need for regular water changes because they create a self-sustaining ecosystems.
If you have a tank overstocked with compatible fish, you can mitigate the high bioload by increasing filtration and adding numerous plants. There is no such thing as over-filtration and further increasing filtration doesn’t negatively impact fish or other aquatic species.

My bunny is 3 now and i 100% understand why thoose other bunnies lived such a short life. They were in a tiny cage (can result in obeesity, heartfailure, gi-stasis and other issues), fed with only pellets no hay or greens (again obesity, heartfailure and bowel issues), a water bottle (choking hazzard) and being arround kids (roughly handeling a bunny can result in broken bones, broken spine and heart failure)

One of my favorite fish died because she had a disability. She was the sweetest guppy ever, but she seemed to have a not fully functioning swim bladder, also she was built like a male but she did have female features. She could swim, but she had to actively swim all the time or she'd sink down. Swam also a bit wobbly, but she was super active and pretty fast. Also always the first one there when I held my hands into the water, super curious, lively little fish. But she also rested a lot at the bottom of the tank. Many times I thought she was dead only for her to swim up and come to the glass when I lightly tapped it, but I did notice that, over time, she grew slower. One night I had strong panic feelings. When I looked into the tank the next morning, she was dead. She was born in my tank, and was approximately 6 months old when she died. But I believe that her short life was still the best life she could have had, she was so lively and curious and full of personality and I will never forget this little fish. It's been two years since she died, but guppies don't live that long anyways, and she had her disability. Love you, Flimsy, I will never forget how much joy you brought me.

I also had a disabled fish! She was a betta who I got as a baby. She got fish tb (or rather, she already had it, but it took a while to actually start causing problems) and couldn't swim very well, along with having a kinked spine. Still, I caught it fast enough to get a fish vet's opinion, and with lots of close attention, she lived for another year. I'm glad to see someone else who understands that every pet deserves the best.

I accidentally dumped one of my minnows down the sink while trying to change their water, and I felt so terrible about it. I tried to save the fish, but it was too late. I had caught these minnows from a creek and kept them in a small tank. Originally, there were 13, but one day I found one dead for no clear reason, and the next morning, another had died. Worried, I quarantined the rest to figure out what was happening. Then, the smallest one died. After the sink accident, I'm now down to nine minnows. I don’t have any special equipment like a water tester or filter, and I don’t even have a net, so I’ve been doing my best with what I have. Since there's no filter, I change the water more frequently. While scooping up water, I didn’t realize there was a fish in it until it was too late, and I cried trying to block it from going down the drain. I feel awful about it and will never make that mistake again.

Once when I was a child me and my mom went to our local Walmart which at the time sold fish. we got a few along with a pretty big fish tank, a filter, so decorations and tank gravel. After about a month we collectively began to forget about the fish, we stopped feeding them, the filter broke, and we just ignored them. The cashier at Walmart that day had said even with proper care the fish wouldn’t live more than a few weeks, and yet even in these awful conditions, one of the fish lived for about a year. I still don’t understand how that fish lived for so long, the tank was so overgrown with algae that you couldn’t even see in it. After we realized that Zebra (the name of the fish because it had stripes) wasn’t planning on dying any time soon, we decided to get a new filter and clean up the tank. It died a few days later
