I bought the Q-shave instead of the Merkur because I don't particularly like the look of these razors and I don't like adjustables that much. Plus I don't know that I would trust that clip-on cap. I like things solidly screwed together, especially things this sharp! Dave.
+Shaved Weiss It was terrific of Steve, to lend me his razor. He has been very supportive of my channel and others too. I have found that the wet shaving community is a terrific place to be. Mostly, everyone is supportive and kind. It's a shame the world doesn't follow our lead.
I didn't realise the futur was so old. Thanks for the shout out.A very interesting shave Mark.Nice to see you use Wickham's cashmere and Irisch moos,as I have both.
+The Suffolk Shaver A shoutout was the least I could do. It was a great shave, very interesting; I really enjoyed it. I love that Cashmire and the Russian Leather. I don't have any full tubs of Whickhams but I think, when I have used one of my existing tubs, I will have to one. Sir Irisch Moos: I just love the name!
Thanks for doing a comparison of the two. I have the qshave and love it. Even though the futur price has dropped I still say it's not worth it for me. I can't wait till the Chinese make more clones.
+joe black Good morning, Joe. I'm glad the video is proving to be useful. I wonder if they will make copies of other razors? Perhaps there will be a Chinese Fatboy, one day or even a Toggle! That would be great. Thanks for dropping me a line. Cheers.
I think you made a right observation that it is a bit easier to find the angle with the Merkur Futur. Sometimes Ming Shi goes into angles that don't shave in an effect way.
+Tomsterr Thanks. I'm sorry I took a little while to respond. It's been a heck of a week. Thanks for watching and commenting. My Ming Shi; it shaves me quite effectively but the Futur was easier to find that angle.
Nice comparison Mark! I have not tried the original, I have only the Ming Shi. It seems to me the weight advantage goes to Merkur, and the audible feedback goes to the Ming Shi. Otherwise I think I can conclude from your side by side that they really do not shave any differently.
+Russell Barton Thanks Russell. I thought they were so similar, in terms of my shave, that I could not tell the difference. The area where I was not quite BBS matched up, on both sides of my face, as you saw. It was very interesting. I did prefer the nice shiny chrome 😃
A superlative comparison shave! Equal, head to head and objective review. It was clear you preferred the aesthetics of Mekur but you did not let that influence your overall opinion of the comparison.
+ime i prezime Hello, Ime. Thank you for your comment. The brush I am using is a vintage Rubberset 200-3. It dates back to about 1927 (I think). I purchased it on eBay and restored it to it's former glory and put in a new Tuxedo knot. It turned out to be expensive, mostly because of the postage and customs charges, to the UK but I do enjoy using this brush. Cheers.
+Michael Petersen I have Michael, it looks just like the Futur. It's a great price. Thanks for commenting; I hope others, that haven't seen the chrome Ming Shi, will notice your post. Cheers.
Michael Petersen I'm sorry, Michael. I was sure I'd seen a bright chrome version of the Ming Shi 2000s. Perhaps I was getting mixed up with the Weishi. Anyway, I have searched the Internet and, like you I suspect, can only find the Ming Shi 2000s or the QShave in a brushed finish. My apologies, Michael, I got myself totally confused. I don't know what I was thinking.
I didn't really see different in the shave but the way it's built completely different but there both rugged just price wise I'm iffy about in long run
+The Shaving Bunny I'm with you on the price. It's the reason I had never bought a Merkur Futur. That's a nice description: rugged. It really is exactly what they are. Both of them give very nice shaves. I love this hobby! Cheers.
+Jeffrey Smith Hi Jeffrey, thank you very much. I do like your videos very much but I find them difficult to watch because of the noise of the running water. I keep trying though. Kind regards. Mark
I bought the qshave instead of mingshi......i was excited for my first adjustable de razor......but i disliked the experience.....when u pick up a razor you want to be aware of its feel on skin.....and with all those settings .....too many cooks spoil the broth i guess
Great review!!! Ming Shi Shaver 2000s, latest price at Aliexpress, $5.85 or $8.49 incl. a stand. All with free shipping. Tried a Ming shi blade today. It's shavable
I don't own the real futur but am impressed by the clone.I showed it to my 10 yr. Old son this morning and he made me laugh very loudly. Wow Dad.. that razor looks like it's from the future! Hahaha!
Bryan Wickel Excellent and a good play on words; if only he knew. I still think it is a very futuristic looking razor, despite it's age. I'll bet they were thought to be out of this World, when they first came out. The clone is indeed a fabulous razor. Cheers Bryan.
Section 16 of the German Patent Act: *The term of the patent shall be twenty years, commencing on the date following the filing of the application in respect of the invention.* www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_patg/englisch_patg.html#p0008 I'm not sure if there's any provision for an extension but if they did indeed file in 1983, the patent expired 14 years ago. Have the Chinese really been making copies for 14 years? Why wouldn't they be copying the Progress as well?
+Shave- a-thon As usual, you make very interesting points; I have been trawling the Internet, looking for answers and I haven't found any. I did wonder if the decision not to renew the patent was influenced by the Dovo Solingen takeover of Merkur, but that date is 1996. No help there. My impression is that the Chinese clones are a fairly recent event and not fourteen years old. If they were fourteen years old, I don't think there would still be such an appetite for comparisons on the forums I've read. I wonder if the Chinese weren't setup to start manufacture of clone razors until more recently because of their emergence from a state run beaurocracy into a more capitalist society. I don't know, I'm just speculating. Presumably, Merkur still manufactur the Futur even though the patent has expired. Has the Progress patent expired? Basically, I'm sorry to say, I just don't know.
Glad I went for the $9 clone. The razor is fine but I cannot get under my nose. The head of the razor is too fat. Glad I didn't dish out $80 for the real thing. I'll use it as a travel razor.
I seem to get quite a lot of volume when I play the video back on my iPad mini but I'll try to talk a little louder. I'm not the only one in the house, so I don't want to shout 🙂
I sometimes listen to recordings and podcasts, on my iPad mini, connected to my radio. I get a much louder volume, obviously the speaker is bigger. I wondered if you had tried this? It cost me £1 for a connecting cable. Would it help if I could do subtitles on the videos? I don't know how to, but I could look into it.

Fair enough, Dave.
Nice of the Suffolk Shaver to lend it to you. The generosity of the wet shaving community is awesome.

The Futur is one of my favorite razors.
I keep meaning to get mine out again, but I do have a few razors to work through😃
I just picked up the Chinese version as well! Thanks for your review Mate!
+Bryan Wickel
I think, you'll enjoy it Bryan. I love shaving with mine. Have a great day. Cheers.

After watching your video I have decided to try the Ming Shi. For the price they sound like a good way to try an adjustable razor. Thanks for the tip.
+Joe Heim
Nice one, Joe. I don't think you'll be disappointed and, as you say, it is a great way to try an adjustable razor. Cheers.
Thanks for doing a comparison of the two. I have the qshave and love it. Even though the futur price has dropped I still say it's not worth it for me. I can't wait till the Chinese make more clones.

i dreaming my Merkur Futur. next in my list. have a nice weekend. ☺
+DemOne
You'll love it, when you get one. Thank you for commenting. Have a great day 😃
Great review! The first razor I bought was a futur and really like it on my face. It is not so great on my head though. thanks for the video!
+Shaved Weiss
I hadn't thought about that. I'll bet it is a very different experience shaving your face and head with the same razor.
I think you should review both razors on setting 6 and use tobs shaving cream.
+J Elford
Ooh. Ouch! I'll do it just for you, mate. NOT. 😃
I think you made a right observation that it is a bit easier to find the angle with the Merkur Futur. Sometimes Ming Shi goes into angles that don't shave in an effect way.

+WolfRanger2008
Thank you, Keith. Hi praise indeed. The Merkur was very shiny and lovely! 😃 I really enjoyed this one.
Nice thorough and fair review. I have a Ming Shi and Northern Shaver helped me compare ot against the Merkur. Definitely two different razors.
Great review, thank you for this fair comparison. What brush do you use, I like it.
+ime i prezime

I have Michael, it looks just like the Futur. It's a great price. Thanks for commenting; I hope others, that haven't seen the chrome Ming Shi, will notice your post. Cheers.
do you have a link...???

Nice review of the two razors.

Master the R41 it's kinda last like derby
+Master the R41
Thank you very much. $5.85, that is a ridiculously low price! What a bargain. I do really enjoy my Ming Shi Shaver. Have a good day.

😂😂😂😂
The only question now is.. Will the chinese market a clone of the Progress? :)
+Bryan Wickel
Ha. They've probably got a warehouse full of them waiting to be shipped out.
If only they replaced that god awful knob with a metal one... @@FriendshipShaving
Oh yes!
“I’m just going to leave that.” - the mark of an experienced wet shaver.
Oh yes. I know when to stop - but I sometimes still forget 😉

It is a bit fat. You may have tried this but have you tried moving the tip of your nose to one side? It may help. Have a good day. Cheers 👍
I went for the clone, too. Good to very good razor. $12 with stand. Unreal deal.
Can you talk a bit louder please.
