A suggestion... With small plastic parts being stolen by the carpet monster, try a UV flashlight to aid in the search. It has worked for me. You may not otherwise like what you see revealed in the carpet stains by the UV light though.

Great video!! Have built those ancient Tamiya kits of the M551 Sheridan, and they were OK. academy came out with 2 new kits of the M551 a while ago: 1 for the Vietnam War and 1 specifically for the 82nd Airborne Division. They were good kits. Appears that the decals for this new Tamiya kit are quite "similar" to the decals that came with the Academy kit.
My supervisor at work served on the M551 during his military career while serving in Germany and patrolling the East/West German border. Also, these vehicles were used at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA, to "simulate" Soviet era vehicles (mainly BMP-1s), until they were finally retired from service a few years ago. This kit would look good painted up in the camo schemes used at the NTC!!

FINALLY! I've been waiting a long time for a new one. I crewed a Sheridan in Germany in the Cav(A3/8); I was the driver and I and my crew lived in that thing like it was a suit. A suit that fried circuit boards left and right whenever the main gun fired a (combustible cartridge) main gun round-The two front roadwheels came off the ground every time(at a standstill), but boy was that hunkajunk FAST-63 mph at Baumholder 1976. And we drove 'em like stolen Ferraris! I can also say, as an intimately knowledgeable expert on the actual vehicle that BOTH the old Tamiya and almost as old Academy kits are horrible, and I'm not even concerned with the lack of detail here, just the measurements they used were waaay off. Although this new tool kit will be a gigantic improvement, I can guarantee all of you I will nitpick the living hell out of this kit. You all realize this kit is going to cost us a weeks' pay easy. Prove me wrong, Tamiya and Trumps' idiotic tariff war.... Power To The Plasticans!

My grandfather, Philip S. Welch was stationed in Germany around that time, serving as a tank technician if I remember correctly.

Could you explain what the "window" is in the front deck piece that Andy mentions he will have to mask. I am building the kit, and it seems to be a window to nowhere, just the metal deck underneath. Google images don't show it clearly, but do seem to have glass reflection there. Thanks

    • @ViperVideos13
      @ViperVideos13 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@daveshick9376 if no one gave you an answer, it was so the driver could see when that front ..."fan" (?) folded out for water crossings. It was made of three sheets of wood that folded out similar to the front of an M113. But unlike a 113, the driver would need to see through it to drive. Apparently the amount of water thrown up over, on to, and around the viewing window made it pretty useless to see through though- so the driver would take directions from the commander in the turret. Since this Airborne reconnaissance vehicle was so light, they thought it should be able to "swim" as well. So in addition to the front panel that would fold out, it has skirts similar to WWII Sherman on DDay. By all accounts I can find, it seems like the Sheridan was a pretty poorly designed jack of all trades vehicle that really didn't master any one thing. The caseless ammunition was also prone to terrible fires and the aluminum hull was no match at all for RPGs or mines

I understand not wanting to go too crazy with the weathering or mud, which is cool - but I was thinking, if you were going to go whole-hog and maybe even create a diorama, since this tank operated in jungle environments a lot, maybe combine the reddish mud with some (scale) long grass from the swampier areas. If they are too busy to clear out the mud, they're too busy to clear out the undergrowth that gets stuck in it as well. :-) And of course, another job well done!

Andy, NICE JOB (as always)! Your rust wash in spots is good to represent the red earth and dust that covered EVERYTHING in service in Vietnam including our GIs! Rusting per se on the Sheridan would not be pronounced on the hull which was made from aluminum in the interest of weight-saving for air drop capability. Also, the chain link fencing anti RPG screen up front would not show much rust as it was galvanized. Agree wholeheartedly on your decision to omit the screening on the engine covers. Wait for the photoetch like you said. Thanks for an advance good look at a really good kit.

  • @waynecoulter6761

Just a heads up... The Sheridan armor was ALUMINUM... Remember, this was an Airborne Tank, meant to be flown in and dropped from C-130 and C-141 Cargo Aircraft so Rust would not be much of a factor... HOWEVER, Vietnam was known for its red dust and mud...

Were you anticipating something sized like the M-22 Locust? That was a small tank at only 7 or so tons.
Back in the 1970s and 80s I got to see a couple of Sheridans on military bases/museums. Aberdeen had one and the other was at Ft. Knox or maybe, Ft. Riley. Compared to an M-60, they were a bit smaller, but definitely not miniatures. Overall, they were more "streamlined" in appearance compared to the M-48 or M-60. Though they were clearly tanks, I thought they looked like something that would be at home on the set of "Lost in Space".

Forgot to take your mask off the fold down windshield/splash shield - I guess I know why - you glued it down before painting and it would have revealed a bright grey area of plastic that wouldn't have paint under it. Also that .50Cal needs to be aftermarket/modded with drilled out muzzle and vents - being the very top of the model and quite pronounced it draws a lot of eye contact and really needs to be top of the game.
Excellent paint and weathering on this one - forgot your chipping/scratch step but it doesnt matter - it's straight out the factory! ;)

Andy, does anyone know of a WW1 1/35 British motorcycle kit. From what I can gather It would be either an HD or Indian mc.

That's a great looking kit and nicely built, painted and weathered as usual Andy, but I do have my concerns regarding the mesh that's included in this sample kit. This is the same rubbish that you get given in many of Tamiya's older releases such as the 1/35 20mm half-track Flakvierling and is absolute crap! I can only hope that Tamiya use common sense and provide photo-etch mesh instead as is the norm now from Trumpeter, Hobby Boss and Meng etc and not stoop to charging an absurdly steep price for it as an aftermarket accessory as they have been guilty of doing in the past. The metal barrel I can live without, but the photo-etch mesh is a must have and I won't be purchasing this one with out it I'm afraid. Thanks again for another solid review.

Never seen a 50 cal with the handle actually moulded on the back of it before! Might be better than the separate peice you sometimes be just that slight careless with n snapping when sanding haha!

The tracks on the Sheridan’s are supposed to be aluminum shine not black steel
I believe even the road wheels are to.
To confirm look at any picture of a m551 Sheridan

@@matte909 I initially thought it was a BF109, as i was confused at first since i had not heard of a t6 texan, but now a quick search does make me believe that it could be a texan, however i had not payed attention well and only saw the wreck
