Of all great conductors Kubelik was probably the most sympathetic and the most underrated.

You knew it when he was conducting. I have Verdi Aida in German conducted by him in live in 1955. It is one of the greatest performances of Aida in history. It's in German but perhaps one of the most intense and wonderful documents of that opera ever recorded.

He says " The peak of contra punt joints all themes, it is called Augmentation and Diminution, and in romantic music, it's a miracle. It's about the idea of inner truth, not only the peak of music but of the spirit. And everything in the world that is beautiful and powerful has double equal life....The matter and the spirit. Spiritual power is in the matter and material power is in spirit. But if this spiritual power is not in the matter, the material power is not enough. The matter can be the most beautiful, but without spirit, it can not have the dynamic and honesty and convincing beauty and love."

Ein Meister bei der Probe, aber vor allem ein Mensch der das Leben liebte. Auch trotz seiner wackeligen Gesundheit hat er seine Generosität zu den Musiker die ganze Zeit gezeigt.

He was a truely great conductor. I like the fact that he doesn´t interrupt so often. But that bears the problem that he has to remind every detail that he wants to correct and that is a pretty difficult task after several minutes of conducting.

This has very strange and very powerful personal dimension, because it was only year after the fall of totalitarian communistic regime and Kubelik went back from his retirement to conduct this. After 45 years of forced emigration, where he worked with orchestras all over the world, he could finaly come back to his home country and do this with the Czech philharmonic orchestra.

I wanted so desperately to find his version of Symphony 9 and i am so glad you have shared this!! Because it is behind the scene and i don't understand what he said, but the way he was instructing it, seemed so full of understanding of the depth of the music! 42:21

In 7:20 min he says: "In third, woods you have phrase a little bit better then..he says tio strings. It's a little dull, You do legato and it must be marcato..like flying birds.
everything must be marcato and "sung"..singing with the left hand (violin) marking marcato the rhythm with a right hand and do it with an inner pulse,
...pulse is in rhythm but also in articulation. It can not be as one "manure" :))))..Also, It must be a harsh little bit like some Indian language."...I didn't even know that kejda is manure in Czech language.. :))) In 15 minute he says It is a bliss with you... I conducted it so many times but it was hard to explain to play it in Czech way but they did effort...that he recorded it four times, in Chicago, in Berlin, Munich, Vienna In 16 min he says I will breathe with you together.
In 37 min he says it must be Hymnus like celebration singing not like a heavy March so you have to sing it. In 32 minute he said compliment I always wanted to make it this way but it never happened in no orchestra in the world. In 39 he says the themes and that it should be a little melancholic but not too much because he was a sober humble person...In 41 min he says I don't want to talk about what the composer was thinking, it's his subjective view, its nobody´s business, but what is surprising for the symphonic world how He joined various themes, that don't complement each other but complement in contra punt of his artwork. Thematic contra punt is a dramatic contra punt and is so strong that it is shown in the last movement. After listening to the progress, repetition, and mostly metamorphosis in coda and then we see how much strength and truth is in every person or in every composer in the self....Then he says when the three themes of three movements join each other he talks about opening the Universe cosmos as the time and space is disappearing.. in big distance and diagonal of time....philosophies about nature and humility and that Dvořak had also problems but realized that he has to be willing and humble and the energy of the last movement got through Dvořak´s heart...That the peace is not in nature, in the environment or in the material world that even crystallization of a matter is a fight...but the peace is only in inner self that the inner self is more than the brain or the ego or the material things. That the theme in the last movement is not dramatic only musically but also philosophically and emotionally with the inner strength and willingness, that the end of the symphony is positive, its end of the symphonic problem brought to one positive thought of beauty and love. That people have to give love etc.

This movement must sound like a solo in a dream.
    11:38
    everything else disappears
    11:45
    only the dream remains
    12:01
as if the heart stopped for a moment
    12:09
and then it starts beating again
    12:05
    an unbelievable atmosphere

he says before Largo: i’m Home, it’s such a pleasure to play with you. I played this piece numerous times and recorded it 4 times, in Chicago, etc. but as much as they tried, and they did a good job this is something else.

The downfall of Maestro, who thinks that he is a Messiah of the New World. Just think of how pathetic these cuts with B&W videos of peasants and fields... I doubt this chatty man had ever ploughed any land.
