  • In this piano tutorial I will show you how to choose the fingering of a particular piano piece: Bach's Invention no. 8. You can follow along even if you can't read sheet music, because I'll break down the different parts slowly and you can follow my fingers on screen. I will explain my fingering choices and how you should approach a new piano piece.

    I'm relatively new to playing "actual piano" (ignore that I had several years of lessons, including needing to pass a college course - the most I got out of it was learning that the thumb should rarely if ever play black keys). I started teaching little ones basic piano, and because of THAT, I finally felt competent enough to try a sonatina or two. I've been wondering about fingering and what's "right" or wrong, and your use of the word "pivot" is really important, also everything else you said. This was an awesome lesson, tea included. Thank you for taking the time to explain exactly as you did. I love that you called it a puzzle. This makes piano playing much more fun and interesting, and I feel far more capable than before.

    So am I right thinking each piece is basically a new challenge? It's like walking down a tiled corridor where you can only step on certain tiles. What happens if you accidentally deviate from the fingering? How can you get back on track without it affecting your performance? As a beginner I find this perplexing.

    Thank you for the great video (as always)! Finally a fingering video that goes through a real example instead of talking about the "usual general stuff". I am very glad that you explain the hand squeezing technique here (as you call it) as I have been using it myself intuitively for a while as a beginner and was wondering if it was bad practice or not. It was great to hear: "Don't overthink the fingering, if it feels comfortable it is probably OK but do spend some time experimenting" and "often times there is more than one correct solution (fingering)". It would be awesome if you did more videos like this on fingering with other tips you can think of. For example two more that come to my mind now: repeating a note with different fingers and changing fingers on the same note.

  • @engmsaif1

    Assuming that you dont memorize the music piece, this means that your eyes are fixed on music notes while playing and you dont look at the piano. How would you know at which notes are your fingers at one point of time when you move your fingers so freely? I really dont know the answer and im not sure if this a skill which i can develop with the time.

    • @MangoldProject
      @MangoldProject  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But you DO end up memorizing the music piece by practicing it over and over.
      To do so, you break it down into 1 bar or 2 bar chunks and work on them independently, and then string them all together.

    6:50 I wud rather pivot at A or B to keep direction change smooth and easier than at next C .. If I have to include B before returning. If u pivot at C returning back is lil cumbersome or inefficient I guess then if u thumb tuck at A or even B. U have momentum of other fingers there which u dont have at extreme end direction change. It will even and make whole chunk progression smooth if u do it in middle or lil before. U can also pivot with 4th in first round too if u like. No manual says when u playing a C scale piece u must pivot at F I guess why not G instead?. 😀
    I mean there are lot of ways to handle particular chunk. And with chunk I mean a piece with straight span without turn.
    And mostly u play smaller size chunks than this in real song. So u can also adjust fingers at end points. Where u change direction otherwise thumb the only option that can help u do achieve it I guess u cant increase fingers with finger adjustment once u already into some chunk. Only at end points or direction change points I guess. Or if u have some repeat note in between where u can switch to other finger in repeat. And sheet music helps u lot in noticing direction change points. But u can do the same with experience too. And after all u set fingering first before playing... so already aware of them. But sheet music can let u figure them out on the fly too along with chunk length I guess... But all that said I dunno how to play with sheet music. But seen many ppl playing with it and all this info is obvious in that. That much I know. I mean I can read them a bit just cant keep the tempo or play along as I read ..or even know every lil tit bit about them. Ornamental things and all I mean.

      If you're lost the best thing would be to do two things:
      1. Get a real world teacher, even if it's only for 2-3 lessons.
      2. Get a good book with (easy) classical pieces - say, beginner Bach or Mozart, with fingerings. As you work through it , you will come across most fingering problems and solutions, which will greatly enhance your understanding of the topic.

    • @Nick-ui9dr
      @Nick-ui9dr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MangoldProject Yeah u are right .. but as i say fingering is least issue for me. I have already dealt most about it in detail when trying play different alankars here as we call it here in Indian system.
      Okay ..I will try that hanon ..lets say 1st one in umm..C# can we? .. okay I will send u my fingering about it across two octaves. That will be enough I guess. Rest will be repeats. U can advice me if I did anything wrong. May not be the best ever solution but wont be bad one at least that much I can assure you. 😀
      But problem here is accuracy and that set target of clean 4 notes at 120 bpm by end of this year as I said. And then there is so much to cover. Coordination, chords, arpeggios, octave play, trills, And then I am into Keyboard rather than piano.. so particular instrument playing. But anycase fingering or even song notes least concern me. I can do with my ears okay if not awesome. Then I want to play bollywood or indian filmy music. So target lil different.
      And really honestly speaking I never new that a simple hobby thing will become so hard to achieve. From distance or normal level everything seems so easy. But when u try master something be it any instrument or anything.... its different ball game. I mean fingers started aching yaar and still not any close to my target. 😂
      I mean I can do around 300 straight bpm with both hands. But scales doesn't mean u can do every kinda pattern on that scale at that tempo. And then from some days I have finally started working on chords, arpeggios and coordinating both hands. So its new problem. 😀 Lets see how we perform in that. Gods help me! 😂
      Anyway yours a good video about the subject and I sincerly appreciate your efforts here. 👍🙏

    Awesome! I’ve been trying to play every song starting with my thumb on middle c. When I start elsewhere it is easier. Glad to know that I’m not weird or doing it wrong. Those videos that are like guitar hero have been great for a different type of visual. When I’m stuck on sheet music I go check those out and play along. Then it makes more sense. Those really help “solve the puzzle “ as you put it.

    What do you think of this fingering for chromatic scales ? Right hand ascending starting on C: 123451234545 and repeat; right hand descending same fingering - if starting on C 1545432154321. Left hand ascending starting on C is 543215432121 repeat; descending (starting on C) 5121234512345 repeat. What I like about it is A) there are only 3 hand positions per octave (2 moves) as compared to anything with a traditional thumb tuck involving at least 4 positions, 3 thumb tucks per octave, if you want to use the same fingering on every octave and not a 2 octave pattern before repeating; B) you can use the same fingering on every octave; C) when striking with a given finger on the left hand there is a single unique corresponding finger in the right hand - for example left thumb is always right pinky. The obvious disadvantage is that you can’t do a legato thumb tuck as with classical fingering. You need to jump the hand instead. Unless I do each way for years I can’t tell which approach is better. I’m very comfortable with the 1234545 fingering in right hand ascending, so I think it’s mostly a question of whether I can eventually get the hand jumps to the new thumb positions to be quick and seamless and not lead to uneven accent. If you think this is a bad idea, what fingering do you use for chromatic scales, or does it vary?

      @@MangoldProject Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I can understand that. What I have been looking for is some sort of general principle for fingering when playing two voices in one hand. It's easy to run out of fingers hehe.
      If you would like to do a video on this topic I'd be happy, and surely others as well, because you're very good at explaining things and there really seems to be no video on this topic out there on TH-cam.
      For an educational example I could recommend the Contrapunctus 1 from Bach's Die Kunst der Fuge. I think that piece is advanced enough to highlight the principles, yet simple enough to not get lost in ornamentation, runs in sixteenth notes, etc.
      Many thanks from Sweden.

      Not sure what to say. If something causes you pain, stop. Try doing other things. If the pain persists, consult a medical professional and a piano teacher, too.

    So for every musical piece you have to follow the correct scale pattern fingering ?

    • @xobced
      @xobced 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not necessarily. I use the scales and pivoting techniques as a good basis for fingering all pieces. Each piece however has different challenges and you may need to be inventive with your fingering but always try to use scale fingering to begin with.

    Mid video I understood it was made for advanced players... As a beginner, if I had to understand that, I would just quit learning, hahaha. I'll see if Gemini easy my mind about piano fingering.
